The one where we have guys stay 4 years...heck 2 years. The one where there is domestic violence, poor academics and juco transfers that can't shoot a 15 foot jumper or play defense. Never mind me "Birdfriend". I guess I have no reason to question why "type" of player Dan Muller tries to recruit because it is very clear of that year in and year out, up and down the roster.

I love athletics. Love basketball. But the process of getting to see a kid on any floor by the time the college season rolls around...it's a sick and twisted process, a sick business. My youngest is a sharp shooting hs sophomore but there are times when I want to take his basketballs and tell him to just go be a kid for a week sans the damn basketball. I told him that, this week, to get away from the game for a while and he just looked at me like I was nuts.

Back to topic...this article is also a very good reminder that recruiting is HARD. Might as well be looking at cattle.

Doug Collins has said that he has no interest in the college recruiting process. "Going into an 18 year old's home to convince him to come play for you...." and that was 20 years ago. Can't say I blame him, and now it's much more convoluted

When Bill McCartney coached Colorado to a National Championship, he said when he went on an in-home visit to see a recruit, the first thing he would do was tell the recruit to get lost. He wanted to spend the first hour to hour and a half talking with the parents (in most cases it was just the Mom). He knew if he could win over Mom it would be much easier to win over the recruit. Winning recruits over Barry Switzer and Tom Osbourne could not have been very easy.

We've offered around 14 recruits in the past month. Looking at MSU's board, they have offered about the same amount of recruits within that time period. Muller said he only offers players that he would be happy if they committed. He knows he won't get them all so he will take who commits first. Muller says he doesn't do shotgun recruiting and it doesn't appear that Dana does it either. Sounds like very similar approaches to recruiting.

When coach Mac went to L.A. to offer QB Darian Hagan in 1988, the blood/crips wars were at their worst. Hagan was thought to be a Nebraska lean. McCartney sat at the kitchen table talking to mom for more than an hour. Finally, he asked her what neighborhood they were in. When she replied crips, Mac said "well, Darian can't wear red, can he?"

Boom. recruitment over.

I doubt Dana's plan is to be at MSU for a few years.

What I found interesting was the strategy to send all the coaches to the southeast. I wonder if that is because that is where most of the guys we are recruiting are at or because you only get one weekend to go out this summer and figure you get a chance to see the players in the midwest at other times during the season?

This new recruiting setup seems great for Power 5 coaches (and elite high school players), but hurts mid-majors and high school kids that aren't the top end prospects.

My hypothesis was SE because of our past success in thst region (Florida, Georgia, NC) and ability to see Midwest players throughout the year ... although there were some Midwest teams in these tournaments.

Muller stated he wants a fan of the change ... perhaps for the same reasons you expressed.

The coaches were in the SE because that's where the tournaments were. It's a trickle down thing. Nike puts their marquee event in Augusta so then Under Armour puts their in event in Emerson, GA (where I saw Muller along with 5 other MVC HC's on Friday) so then Adidas puts there event in Birmingham so then HoopSeen puts their event in Powder Springs, GA.

I'm sure they watched players from all over the nation because that's where 75% (my guess) of all DI prospects were.

It's actually pretty comical. Muller and the rest of the MVC fly to Georgia to watch players from Illinois. I know he watched Kwiecinski and Kochera.
