I agree that this could have gone the other way but I'll admit that I'm biased and I'll argue that the officials made the correct call.

Here's the definition of a catch -

To catch a ball means that a player:

  1. Secures control of a live ball in flight before the ball touches the ground, and
  2. Touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then
  3. Maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball, advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc., and
"Maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him perform an act common to the game." You hear some announcers say that the receiver needs to catch the ball and then make a football move to establish possession. I submit that my client Wenkers Wright did just that. He caught the ball at the two-yard line. He turned his body and headed into the endzone - football move. Not knowing exactly where he was he deliberately held the ball out in front of him. He lost control of the ball at that point but he had already -
A) broken the plane of the endzone B) traveled 3 yards with the football while making a football move
C) controlled the ball a yard deep into the endzone. 2 pts. REDBIRDS!!!!!! The defense rests.
I hear you but still feel surprised the on field call was reversed. It is tough to determine if the receiver had full control of the football at any point as it was being brought down towards his core. Glad we got the W and hope the team got out of town fast as I am sure the mo state fans were not happy.

I spent most of this game telling my wife we were getting screwed. The first overturned call on the winning drive was arguably clear evidence. The goal line play less so. But congrats to coach Spack on getting his 100th in truly memorable fashion. That was a difficult environment where the officials probably cost you point, but you won. Good day to be a Redbird.

That and he knew season was over for sure with a loss.

But slim got a lot slimmer with Annexstad out.
We went to the semis with Jefferson as our QB. In that semifinal game, losing 9-3 at NDSU, Jefferson threw 8 passes, completing 3 for 34 yards and a pick.

JR and Jefferson being a running threat gave us a shot. I wouldn’t mind a windy game against Murray State if TR is starting.

My guess is that Annexstad will play if he can, and we need to evaluate what plan gives us the best chance. Whoever that is, our OL and stable of RBs needs to be ready to find holes and scamper.

To me, a big difference was he caught the pass at the 1 yard line - thus, becomes a runner - all that needs to happen is cross the plane. If he had caught the pass in the end zone - then the follow through the whole process comes into play. But, the ref at the goal up his arms up right away - then the refs got together to call it incomplete. The replay ref, just agreed with the linesman initial call.

Rittenhouse is a better passer than Jefferson. I'm hoping Zack can bounce back but we can still win with Tommy. Never bet against a TR.

Handing out game balls.

1st one goes to Zack Annexstad. 33 for 49 291 yards 1 TD. 0 ints, 0 sacks. 33 completions and it should have been higher. There were some drops by usually reliable hands.

2nd -Jalan Gaines continues to be the man on the "D" side. They know he's coming; he's a marked man and he still gets pressure/sacks.

3rd - Pete Bussone. I have been quietly critical of our C and LG positions but they played well yesterday. Defenses are forcing Blakemore to stay inside but he found some room to run behind Bussone.

4th - Brock Spack It took 100 wins but this the first time I've given him a game ball. I know he's honored.

If I'm not at the game I'm a TV video and WJBC audio follower of the game. I don't have them synced.
I like getting the audio first so I know what to watch for when the play comes on TV.

Normally I'm a huge fan of Ted Schmitz but lately the media has not been giving the defense a break. Last week the defense got singled out, but 24 points is not a lot against a team like N. Iowa. I thought the Off and Def shared equally in that loss. This week Ted was a downright Debbie Downer on the defense. He was saying we couldn't stop them and that we needed to score on almost every possession to win. The team with ball last was going to win it. Let's check the facts.

1st Q - Mo. St. drive ends with a Redbird INT
2nd Q - Mo. St drive ends with a PUNT
Late 2nd Q - clock runs out but the drive started with 32 seconds to go. The Redbirds gave up a 4-yard completion and then got a sack. Both of those plays are clock movers. The Redbirds successfully defended against plays like 20-yard completions up the sideline and then out-of-bounds that would stop the clock. I've seen teams score (FG or more) with this little time remaining. This counts as a stop.

3rd Q - Mo. St. drive ends with a Redbird INT
4th Q - Mo. St drive ends on downs after failing to convert on 4th down (something the Redbirds did 6 times).

That's 5 stops. MSU had 10 possessions in the game. A 50% success rate and 35 points isn't great but it's a long way from "can't stop them."

So lighten up Ted and take some mushrooms before you hit the air. 5 sacks and 2 INT's. The young defense took it on the chin at times but it was never long before they came up with a big play.

I called out the nose tackle position last week. To be fair Jake Siegal made a nice TFL on the RB when the D-line slanted to the left and Siegel was in perfect position to make the play.

Obviously hope Zach is healthy enough to give it a go next Saturday, but I’ve been a fan of TR since he played at WSF and I’m excited to see if he’s ready to take the next step in his development.

Could be a blessing in disguise in terms of getting a read on if he is ready to take the reins next year.

The Birds have been to Semis twice. Lost to Georgia Southern in '99. Win against New Hampshire. The NDSU game was the quarterfinals. There was a graphic during the game that gave Spack 2 Semis appearances. It was incorrect.

The ball crosses the goal line it is a touchdown. Doesn't matter that I'm sorry you guys want to go mow your lawn except for go to a playoff game.

Listen to WJBC while watching TV. Remembering the 2018 bogus stiff arm called on JRob costing us a playoff bid.

Yes, but .... that year, we had our best RB ever, James Robinson and possibly Spack's best defense ever. Granted, they surprised me with how well we played. But our defense is still figuring things out.

p.s. TBS ... now who's the Debbie Downer
