Pathetic targeting call. Shouldn't you be required to hit the guy with your helmet if you are going to be kicked out? Second worse call I've seen today.

targeting call was so weak.

2nd half left a lot to be desired on offense. Give their front 7 credit .. they held is in check most of the game. Our defense again looked very good for most of the game. Step backward for our OL, but at least they got to see what a tough front 7 plays like. Need to get them ready.

Second half smelled

Good W. Trees seemed to focus on stopping the run.

I'm sure Coach Spack was coaching with a heavy heart with the passing of Coach Tiller. Glad he got the W to help ease the pain.

Gibbs ran two veteran routes and showed great balance walking the tight rope on both TD's.

Indiana State is much tougher than I thought. Physical team.

Need Himmelman back for the second half gauntlet. Not a ton of experience on that o-line so some brute force is always welcome. Let's not average <2 yards per rush again. Not a winning formula, typically.

Certainly not time to pull the rip cord but feel this team is challenged relative to expectations of ISU being a top 10 team. Defensive is super impressive to the point that it is masking many offensive shortcomings. Kolbe seems suspect overall. Hope my gut feelings are wrong.

All is well, There are teams that would gladly take the birds w/L record.
It is happening. We don't need to go through what was important to certain people here or there.

The biggest thing hampering ISU isn't money or coaches or fan/community involvement.

Iowa State took a different trajectory 40 years ago. Illinois St. didn't, Our ISU may never be allowed the chance to get in the ring with the big dogs.

Two reasons. We are not part of the club (as it were)
Secondly, as much money as we raise it's not enough to keep up.
ISU< has wealthy alumni,................did any of those alumni develop a relationship with ISU Football?

Some quick 3:30am thoughts while my 1 month old is not sleeping...

Defense wins championships but you also need to score to win football games. This O-Line looked vulnerable last night and was not getting the push that is needed to spring the strong stable of running backs that we have.

Robinson. Hang onto the damn ball, don’t try to do too much, especially near the goal line.

Back to defense, what a game by Adam Conley. Always seemed to be in the backfield and was Johnny on the Spot for the early touchdown.

That targeting call was BS and I hope that the loss of Barry for the first half of next week doesn’t come back to bite us.

And lastly, back to offense. I know some complained about Kolbes game, but I didn’t see it as that terrible. Some great wheel route passes to Gibbs and a few good lucks to Schnell. That pick 6 looked more like a bad read than a bad throw not that that’s excusable.

Final thought: It’s a win. But it’s also not the type of win I would have preferred to see when we are 2 weeks away from the gauntlet that is SD, YSU, WIU, SDSU, NDSU.

Defense: They're still really good. And I genuinely don't believe they are just beating up on bad offenses. I think this D will be stout regardless of the opponent and they will be keeping us in games.

Offense: On a positive note, it was nice to see a few deep completions. Feel like that's an area that Kolbe has been suspect on in the past, so good to see some improvement there. Other than that.....not too many good things going on. Outside of the few big plays, we never really established any kind of rhythm whatsoever. A lot of that could be attributed to the run game never really getting going. Definitely nervous for this group going forward as the competition steps up.

Pick 6 wasn't Kolbe's fault. Was actually Fowler's if anybody. He and Gillum both run quick outs, except Fowler stutter steps and takes fooooooorever to get out of his break which leaves the two of them about 2 yards apart from each other running the same route. Gillum was open, but because the two of them were so close, the dude covering Fowler breaks off of him and is right there for the pick. Easy fix.

Special teams: Looked good in all areas.

Random observations:
-I know myself and others have brought this up plenty of times, but I'll go ahead and beat a dead horse....the turf really does look just awful.
-We seem to have lots of coaches that like to wear sunglasses at night...
-Markel really likes to point when he gets a first down.....even when he doesn't actually get a first down....
-Petkovich is really big. We should throw to him some more.

Coach Spack said in the post game press conference that the interception was from a receiver breaking off a route. Lots of times an interception looks like a bad throw by the QB when it is a receiver making a mistake. Robinson had some nice runs but now you have to have some concern about him hanging onto the ball. Spack also mentioned that there was a problem with the center/QB communication due to the changes at center. I don't think the O line play was that bad. ISUblues really stacked the line and it looked as if their game plan was to stop the run and they must have felt their DBs could handle the Redbird receivers...that was a faulty assumption if it was the case. The Defense was very good again. They only gave up 7 points and i don't think that would have happened if not for the very, very questionable targeting call. Very bad call. Their helmets did hit but it did not appear to me that there was any attempt to lower the head and inflict. It is football...helmets are going to hit from time to time. Very bad call. Special teams were very good I thought. They covered kicks well and nice long field goal. The offense left a lot of points on the field last night. Lots of penalties, lots of mistakes, lots of miscommunication and too many turnovers. The offense should buy the defense dinner this week. Defense saved this game.

1 for 14 on Third Down.
1.6 yd/run avg.
0 for 3 in the Red Zone
3 fumbles (2 lost)
1 interception

That’s a bad day for the offense. Lots to work on before a long trip to Flagstaff.

Very good defense again .. they had only 1 sustained drive all night in Q3, which came right after their pick 6. Honestly, I like that it put us on our heels .. we really need to learn what that feels like as a team. Our schedule so far is not preparing us for the MVFC grind we will face in last 5 to 6 games.

Very uneven offense .. passing looked great for most part, but we only had 1 series where run game looked good .. 1st drive in Q4 where Robinson has 3 double digit runs .. problem is he also had 3 negative yard runs same series. Give credit to InSU from 7 and schemes.

Special teams, especial kick coverage, was very good .. they're kick returner was demoralized.

The biggest concerns for game were
- run game being stifled with too many TFLs
- going 1 for 14 on 3rd down
- # of mistakes that end our drives and/or cost us field position, which were a little too reminiscent of early last season.

We had 3 drives stopped inside their 10 that produced zero points ... the failed 4th down conversion at their 8 (given their front 7 performance, hindsight says we should have kicked FG), the fumble on the 1/2 yard line, and then the bad snap from their 5. Note before that bad snap, we were on their 1 but lost yards on 2 straight plays .. zero points on 3 drives inside their 8. Combined with the pick 6 which put us on our heels for entire Q3, and that is why we didn't pull away.

To be fair, InSU took us out of our comfort zone and they also made mistakes .. and sometimes we capitalized on tier mistakes .. but we're supposed to make less mistakes. And to come away with zero points on 3 drives inside their 8 .... got to do better.

Again, I am truly glad we struggled and were able to pull out a win ... we need to know what that feels like. But we also played sloppy and need to clean some things up. OL needs to get back on positive track ... great game for them to learn from watching film.

side note on Gibbs .. recall the 45 yard catch in Q1 where he got behind DB but lost his footing after easy catch .. that should easily have been 73 yard TD catch, not 45 yarder - would have made great day for Gibbs even greater. Also note, we settled for FG on that drive .. so 4 more points left on field.

Dr. Jeyell and Mr. Hyde - from series to series. Kolbe looks very good at times and then looks like a deer in the headlights.

I think it was very obvious, Indy State did everything to take away the run - and in so doing said - Kolbe you have to beat us - which was fairly good in the first half and not so good in the second half.

I really think that the RB time should be done in series. That would give the guys the opportunity to get a rhythm going. Watched Markels frustration on the sidelines last night. Some of the worst play calls for him last night. Two or three hand off on third and over12+ yds. Leave the Back on the field till the drive is over. That way you will know what we have. Commentators mentioned that Smith was our more experinced back several times on espn3. Robinsons a good back but gets a little timid after a mistake. watch film. Smiths a bruiser no matter what!!!! Even his tfl takes five guys to get him down. TOTAL BEAST! FANS are saying the same in the stands.

A couple thoughts: it may have helped a lot of the crowd left at half. They saw us up big and headed out; thus, they didn't see us suffer through an awful week of FB. Our next two games will be sold out because of Homecoming and Family Weekend. We need to make 4 of our 5 home games sell outs.

I think we could have had some effective playaction passes down in the red zone, especially near the goal line. They blew up our runs, but we would have had a lot of room to roll out and dump off to a single-covered WR.

Our defense likely would have given up 7 or fewer points if not for the pick 6 and a horrible targeting call. New just can't rely on our defense to shut teams out every week, so the offense needs to pick it up. I guess if we have a mistake-prone half on offense, have it be when we're up 3 scores.

One criticism: will we ever do anything non-conservative with 7 or under minutes left? If we are going to effectively take a knee, we might as well just do that and not risk a fumble. If that is our only play calling, we failed greatly because we leave valuable seconds on the play clock. So what if we get a delay of game? The extra second it would tick off is more valuable than a few yards because we really aren't going for a 1st down. Also, if you have multiple timeouts, let the play clock run down to 1 a few more times and call TO. That would have ticked an extra 7-10 seconds off the clock at that juncture.

One compliment: I like Petkovich going up and grabbing those balls over the middle. Do that 4-5 targets a game and you might see him net 30-40 yards on 3-4 catches. It adds another element they have to cover. Reminds me at times of James O. getting balls only he could come down with.

Ok, I was wrong about the Redbird D pitching a shutout. However, what I didn't count on was that our D had to battle both the tree's offense AND the Redbird offense. If we didn't have so many Redbird turnovers (with good field positions for ISUb) the D could have totally stopped them. :(

Bird offense gets a C- on this test.

Special teams gets an A for the first half and a C+ for the second half.

i think the 12 TFLs and change at Center early (suspect snapping on place kicks and shot gun - notice Kolbe was taking everything under center after bad snap to start Q4) caused some disruption to our game plan. So considering that, I would say Kolbe had a very good day. Granted Q3 we completely lost momentum, and the Q4 we were trying to put game on ice .. so Kolbe didn't do much 2nd half .. but Spack said the pick 6 was receiver breaking off route wrong.

But I still come back to fact that he threw for 345 yards, completed 60% of passes for 172% QBR on a day where run game struggled all night and we absorbed 12 TFLs including 3 sacks. Can always get better, but Kolbe had a nice day passing.

Defense - Very solid. Again.

Offense - Flashes, but a bad 2nd half. Overall pretty ugly. The two Kolbe-Gibbs connections were great.

Overall - Some credit definitely has to go to Indy St. They played very hard and gave us some trouble, as I knew they would. (They do in every sport.) They are better than 0-4 for sure.

A win is a win though. On to the next one.

Eliminate the turnovers and this game has the feel of a 45-0 beat down. Probably why a lot of the fans left at halftime.

This win should teach the team some lessons like Fourth mentioned above.

The #1 team in the country, James Madison, won 20-10 yesterday. A win is a win.
