NIU and SIU have got it done in the past. They will still be around. If SIU had the name "Illinois State University", then things may look vastly different. NIU's mistake is its location. SIU's mistake is not changing the name. But both, imho, accomplished more than ISU.

Seriously? I don't know how NIU can claim location as a problem. The majority of students at state universities come from the Chicago suburbs so how can it be a problem to be the directional located closest?
If anybody has a location problem it's Illinois State. We're too close to Champaign. If you look at the colleges you listed at SIU the big difference came in 1970-1972 with the SIU school of Medicine and the SIU Law program. The powerful U of I lobby wouldn't want those located in Normal. So Illinois State continued to focus on quality undergraduate education. The result? Our enrollment has stayed strong while SIU-C and NIU have suffered declines. Illinois State is drawing better students with higher test scores.
I'm not convinced that SIU-C will be around as we know it. The state will continue to have severe budget problems. SIU-E now has a higher enrollement than SIU-C. There may not be a need for undergrad education at both campuses.

I think location hurts them in three ways..

1. You want to spend 4 years in Dekalb?

2. When you were that age, did you want to be 30 minutes from mom and dad? Or 2 hours?

3. Commuter school
not all sold on NIU location, solely as respects to distance from home, hurting NIU more than it helps. Try driving all the way to SIU or try getting to WIU. Yes NIU has a commuter school element but look at UIC.. although UIC has quickly blown past all other state public unis and has strong momentum for many reasons.

Seriously, your obsession with me is just a little creepy...

I would love to have an intelligent conversation about the problems NIU is having, but you have proven to be a total home that is unable to do that, when I mentioned before that NIU's declining enrollment would be a problem for the athletic department (about 3 years ago?), your board got completely undone and said I was wrong.. Was I?

jon ... did you or did you not post under multiple User Profiles on NIU and other boards ?

I had a few NIU board accounts blocked, never violated their terms, they just didn't want to hear the truth, which BTW has come to fruition exactly as I said. They chose to make it personal rather than act like adults. I currently have an account there, but don't use it much. This is the only account I have had here, I have had an account on the Illini board for a few years.

But why do you feel a need to kick them when theyre down ? You notice people on this forum took a few harmless jabs during game week, and then moved on .. why can't you move on ? If you are a Redbird Fan and that is your genuine interest in being on this forum, why have you rarely posted any other football game week .. if at all ?

I was not the person that brought this topic to the top again, I just replied. And I have been talking about the enrollment of all of the state schools, as a guidance counselor it is something I deal with. Then again, we don't have fans of the other directional schools coming in here all butt hurt.

actually you were the one to restart this thread .. posting on this thread stopped around 4pm on the saturday (9/7) a little before the Morehead St game started. There were no more posts until you posted om Sept 12, and you were perfectly eager to respond despite my and others attempts to suggest we move on. yes others posted too, but you were without doubt the driving force sitting here more than 2 weeks after game was played.

NAU game ... big game for our Redbirds, what are your thoughts ...anything at all ?? Please use that thread to enlighten us about that game .. or enrollments issues, or reason to move to or not move to Flagstaff, or same for sending HS kids to ... anything ???

Below is attendance at NIU football games this year, they need to start doing a home and away series with ISU.. I honestly do not know how that athletic department survives as an FCS school averaging 8536 per football game (we averaged over 11K) and 1000 for basketball..

Game 1. Illinois State, 14,658
Game 5. Ball State, 10,365
Game 8. Akron, 9,027
Game 11. EMU, 5,062
Game 12. WMU, 3,568

If we are ever going to go FBS, maybe we need to use NIU as a model.. with their declining enrollment and poor fan support, their athletic budget is garbage and they have been forced to take these payday games against P5 schools to keep programs afloat.. the result this year is no bowl game as they finished 5-7, yet teams with lesser conference records and better budgets ended up bowl eligible.. We need to make sure we never get into NIUs position and being desperate for money at the expense of the athletic programs.

Currently we have the budget to support FBS at the MAC level and we would out recruit NIU for FBS athletes, but the future is never guaranteed...

I want you to try and say something nice about NIU. Just try it, I'm wondering if your body will reject it and you'll explode or something like in the movies
