I agree that there is improvement - just wish it had happened between November to December - but, better later than never.
Copeland playing better, which I believe comes from feeling more comfortable. Tinsley looked better, which is definitely positive. Same with Evans - playing better, which is positive. Rey is looking better every game - beginning to show offensive ability - all positive

The issue for many - is why in the world has it taken several Seniors this long into the season to begin to figure it out??? Of course that is giving them the benefit of the doubt that they have figured it out.

Definitely took too long but we are seeing positraction which is good. Hoping the trend continues. Chastain is the catalyst to the new page turned. Hope he stays healthy.

No offense, but if Rey doesn’t pan out until his senior year, then that’s another wasted scholly.

This program has the ability to be the Wichita State of the conference! We will see where we are in the next couple of years! It’s looking a little skeptical!

Nice road win. Even when the lead was chipped down to 4 it didn't feel like we were going to lose. I still don't understand our offense, but we scored 78 points. Shows what I know.

It helps that Evansville look like one of the worst teams in the country. It’s hard to believe they have 3 wins in the conference...and a win over Loyola.

They also played Xavier and Murray State tough. Obviously Evansville is not one of the worst teams in the country, and I think at least partial credit to how they looked yesterday should go to the ISU defense, which is much improved since Christmas break. It still has room for improvement, but before Christmas it was a sieve.

There are reasons for optimism. Fayne, despite a sub-par game yesterday, has been Fayne, Chastain coming into his own, Yarbrough's play is becoming more steady, Idowe is developing nicely, Evans seems to be coming out of his funk, Copeland is looking more comfortable and doing a better job of picking his shots.

Assuming no major injuries, I think the keys are (1) a continued commitment to defense. (2) Yarbrough letting the game come to him.
Thank you. Evansville is far from one of the worst teams in the country. What an idiotic statement.

I knew the result, but got to watch the game today. I love watching us win! Not much new to add that wasn't said. MY has to be one of the best offensive scorers we have had. He just knows how to put the ball in the basket. I notice most of his turnovers are offensive fouls or passes at Fayne's knees. Sometimes he is too unselfish and wish he would shoot.

I am still perplexed by KEY and his ineptness and low IQ and Hein's minutes. I guess one of them has to play, but I hope JJ gets the message and takes a lot of those minutes. Hein has scored 3 points in 6 MVC games. He gave up 3 just in the last 2 minutes of today's game. I know I am preaching to the choir, but there has to be someone that can play.

No offense, but I'm glad you aren't the one determining who stays and who goes for the program.

By good, I mean he will be putting up Phil like production. By his senior year Rey will be a potential all-MVC candidate.

I am trying not to be too giddy about this kid, but can someone point out a negative in Chas' game? He plays lock down, best on the team hustling defense. He plays above the rim all the time, getting rebounds, offensive putbacks, and alley oop slams. Twice yesterday, he leaped way out of bounds to save a ball. And he hit mid range shots. And he hits 3's. His bb IQ is way up there. The next 2 1/2 years are gonna be fun, I think.

Well, Phil was good his sophomore year. So why do we have to wait until Rey’s senior year. I agree with Cali. Odd statement to make about a decent freshmen big.

I'm simply trying convey I think he is going to be good. How about this? Rey is good, and will continue to get better. Everyone happy?

If you take everything he’s done to this point, it looks decent.

Keyshawn just looks like a shell of his former self more times than not.

My hope is Josh (or someone) steps up and over what Matt H provides. Dan has a pecking order and Hein will remain in that eight until that happens.

Some quick observations that haven't been touched on after making the trip to this game this weekend:

1) Evansville, while decent, doesn't take advantage of easy scoring opportunities when they present themselves. I attended both games this year, and there were numerous times in each game where they got penetration and found themselves in a position to put up a shot in the paint but were much more content to fire it back outside to hoist a 3 instead. I thought it was curious in the first meeting, but then they were at it again Saturday. Clearly, they are being coached to play this way, and their insistence on doing it helped us out because they were settling for lower percentage shots (11/33). For that, I thank them.
2) Rey is going to be a solid player during his tenure here. He has shown improvement in every game, and once he fixes some minor things and most importantly stops rushing he has the potential to become the next great big in the MVC. The finish he had on the Hein feed was absolute money. He goes hard on the glass, and we need as much of that as we can get.
3) It was my first time at the Ford Center, and it's a pretty good venue overall. It's a good environment, and the Evansville fans that were around us were all very pleasant to talk with during the game. If you can make the trip, I suggest it.
4) On that note, we had a guy come up and apologize to my daughter after the game because he was yelling at Muller about his wardrobe choices. Apparently, he noticed my daughter taking exception to what he was saying / giving him the staredown, and felt the need to come and apologize. He made the assumption that, because of where we were sitting she must have been Muller's kid. Pretty funny stuff actually.
5) The guys were focused, but loose during warmups. You could tell they were ready to go well before this one ever got started. So, good job to the coaching staff for having them ready to do some damage.
6) The drive home sucked. We had an extra hour and a half added to what should have been a 2 hour 26 minute drive. We ran in to Key yesterday at ISU Softball Camp as we were leaving Horton and he said the team got back home around 11pm. So, long trip for them. He was also wearing a brace on his non-shooting hand thumb after slightly injuring it during the game, but said he will be good to play against Bradley. Just planning to tape it up. So, when you see that, that's why.

Good report, Redbird28. Surprised you made it back Saturday. We decided to hunker down in Olney. Even Sunday was an adventure.

I agree completely. I really don't see why Hein has so many minutes and why he is in the game at crunch time. Dan, please explain.

Ten times out of ten when Muller is asked about Hein he points to his defense and his ability to be one of the best perimeter defenders on the team. Whether you believe it or not is up to you but that is what Muller has said.

Hein is a above average defender in the zone because he really understands the rotations, how to help the middle, and how not to get sucked in below the high post. However, the scouting report for the offense is simple when Hein is defending: drive. At least 70% of the time when a player drives on Hein, Matt either fouls him (not usually because he is behind the play) or the help man (Phil, Milik, Chas, Boogie, or Rey) gets put in a position where they have to foul.

The Ford Center in Evansville is a beautiful arena. It is designed for hockey. which throws off the sightlines for basketball, and puts too many seats behind the baskets. And it looks weird because they cover up a lot of the seats in the endzones, because they are so far from the floor, and those end up behind risers they put up for the band and student sections on the endlines. Ford Center has several suites and great seating throughout. Ticket prices are kinda high, and so are concession prices. They had a nice crowd of about 5700 Saturday, but pretty quiet most of the time. Everyone we met was very nice and welcoming.

I really liked our all business demeanor by our players and coaches. We played as smart as we have all season. And we did a great job of keeping our cool. Especially Milik. He seemed as focused as ever has, right down the stretch. Chas seems to get better and better every game, and already has a highlight reel as good as just about any player in the Valley will have all year. Rey made some nice plays.

Excellent report Redbirds28. I agree with all of your point. I also attended both Evansville games and while I never really feel a lead is safe with us I had little doubt we would win based on their peculiar style. I would like to see them again in St. Louis.
1. Ford Center is a very nice venue. Listed as 200 less capacity than Redbird Arena (10K), it does not feel as big. Upper deck was not used and I saw no bad seat in the house. Fans were extremely respectful for the most part and seemed knowledgeable. Several fans even came up to us and shook our hands to say great game after. Maybe it was due to the flow of the game, but for a good size area it was pretty quiet. I would recommend the trip as it is a nice venue and there are good restaurants and a nice Tropicana Casino there.
2. Team seemed very loose during the shoot around. Phil threw down at least six monster dunks in a row at the end. I actually worried about a hand fracture they were so violent, but impressive as hell.
3. Milik is a talented, but interesting character to watch in person. He has some of the best ball control around the rim I’ve ever seen. He looks almost tortured at time with his facial contortions after any call against him. He seems to be learning to deal with it better. He seems to struggle how to go from a completely unselfish ball distributor to realizing and wanting to take a game over singlehanddedly at times. The talent is there no doubt.
3. The foul disparity was a joke in this game (at one point) 20-2. We still one by 8 and I like how we match up with them.
4. I agree Rey has great potential and is a big body that we need going forward in the MVC. His confidence will come with his shot and I feel like he is still trying to understand his role on the team. I look forward to him backing down some of the MVC Bigs in the upcoming years
5. The ride back to Nashville was a Bear on Sunday for the ten of us, but we’ll wort the trip. Always good to see a much needed win

A lot of talk about Rey in here and I am with you! Rey is the key to beating Loyola. Rey and Krutwig are similarly sized and I would love to see Cam try to back Rey down. The combo of Milik and Phil did decent against him a week ago, but I'm not sure Cam scored when he was in the game against Rey. Keep those hands straight up, get a wide base, and don't get backed down.

In my opinion, Key is playing like a guy who has already made the post BB transition. He seems like he wants to mail it in. We all know he can play better, so whats up? Could it be a classic case of a kid being burned out?

The Ford Center is beautiful. ISU has a big win streak in that building. The Ford Center helped end the big losing streak we had going on Roberts Stadium. The Ford Center is their Redbird Arena, sanitizing the basketball experience. In effect, The Ford Center destroyed their Roberts advantage, much like Redbird ruined our Horton Fieldhouse edge.
