At the East-West Shrine allstar game, Davontae was listed as 5' 11 1/4" and 203 lbs.

If you look at the top 35 CB prospects according to DraftTek, Davontae is in the 90th %-ile of weight. If you look at the top 22 Safety prospects, Davontae falls right in the middle. My guess is he could easily put 5 lbs on that frame if he wanted to. Similar for the safeties and corners in the East-West shrine game where he was the 2nd heaviest CB on both rosters combined.

They love everything about him except his top end speed and his hips ... they really love his physicality and run support. Thinking his best chance at next level is Safety. He also plays with the mentality of a safety already.

Davontae ... you have the skills and body for next level ... but maybe as a Safety, much moreso than Corner.

I didn't see the physicality with him. I was a little disappointed in his tackling this year. He has the body for it, but not sure he has the mindset.

I'm watching the combine now, Harris ran a 4.44 in his first 40 yard dash, good for #8 time overall (out of 40+ CB's? or total DB's? not sure, they made some reference to #42 being at the end of the line). Just did 4.47 in second dash.

Guess they already did their lifts. He had 22 I think, #3 overall.

He's showing pretty well!!

Not going to say I told you so, but ....

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/davontae-harris?id=2559972

Strengths Compact build with good thickness. Rugged against the run. Attacks run support duties with desired effort and energy. Runs through targets with good force as downhill tackler and when striking on an angle in open field. Three year starter with good ball production totals. Shows ability to accelerate quickly after changing direction. Strikes pass catcher in attempt to dislodge catch. Has size and toughness to transition to safety.

Weaknesses Very average athlete. Hips are tight and his play is more linear than fluid in space. Labors to flip hips and sprint from squared position. Allows too much vertical separation over the top. Shows some panic down the field and will default to grabbing and mauling. Needs to do better job of reading quarterback and anticipating throws. Has opportunities to squeeze routes but doesn't see them.

Draft Projection Rounds 6-7

Bottom Line Harris struggles to squeeze routes in man coverage and can be beaten down the field, but he has good size and is tough against the run. He could be targeted late on Day 3 by teams looking for a zone corner with the ability to transition to a cover-two safety role. Harris may be an early practice squad prospect.

That's great to hear! I wasn't sure if he'd run under 4.5.

I saw the bench yesterday. 22 reps is very impressive and a sub 4.5 is great. we know he interviewed well. impeccable character.

great Combine overall. congrats DH!!!!

must admit I was surprised to with his forty, just based on what scouts were saying .. note, website ways he ran 4.43, not 4.44 ... not to split hairs, but give the man his 4.43 !!!.

and the 22 bench presses is very impressive ... finished first among CBs; next closest CB was 20, then 18

Must have been "unofficial" first time when I watched it! ;)

Not sure how much his decent showing in "metrics" will change the scouting report you posted, fourth. Sounds like he's gonna get a shot one way or the other, 3rd day draft choice or FA somewhere.

if he does well in 20 and then either vertical or broad jump, I'm thinking he gets drafted. The forty and bench had to impress scouts who already liked him as a football player.

Wasn't watching close enough .. already did some other events.

So he was tied for 11th in Broad Jump at 10'3", and 6.96 in 3 cone .. both very solid. His 20 yard shuttle was 4.40 and vertical were 32.5 .. so not great on those last 2 events.

I think that's a fair call. With his physicality and straight line speed he has a chance to be a good special teams player immediately and that's how he best makes a team the first year.

he could even add 5-10 lbs and play safety if need be.

Illinois State is not a foreign name in NFL circles any longer and that helps his cause also.

I don't recall ever having this many Birds in the NFL as in these past few seasons. That really shows the elevation in talent across the roster. We've had one or two players at a time, even some who were starters, but not this many players on rosters.

Some perspectives on Davontaes results ...

First, if you drop all of Davontae's results onto Safety position .. he would have finished 4th in forty, 3rd in bench, 5th in 3 cone, 8th in long jump, 11th in 20 yd shuttle.

Second, there were 44 DBs at the combine. Davontae finished 19th in 20 yard shuttle .. not good, and his weakest event. But also note that 21 of the 44 DBs elected to not run the 20 yard shuttle. While only 6 of the 44 elected to not run the forty. If anything, the forty is far riskier event (hamstrings) and more taxing than the shuttle.

As further example of combine strategies ... most athletes skip the 60 yard shuttle .. too taxing and not as vital. Only 7 of 44 DBs ran the 60 yard shuttle .. Davontae did not as well. This is smart move.

So give Davontae credit for running the 20 yard shuttle knowing this was not his strength .. nearly half of the DBs decided not to expose their time.

Scouts know this.

Davontae clearly has some abilities not usually found among Valley DB's. He had interest from some major programs in HS but that fell off when he suffered a serious injury his senior year. Mike Gardner our incoming DB from Texas experienced the same thing. Hopefully lightening will strike twice and Gardner will have a NFL combine in his future.

ISU players always seem to test better than expected at the combine for some reason. Coprich and Robinson had similar performances.

Another local sports guy suggesting he move to Safety.

Woah. That's pretty damn good. Did James get a deal like that being taken in the 5th?
