He was also 1-13 (0-7 3's) shooting in the two games in St. Louis.
13-66 (19.7%) 4-34 3's (11.8%) over his last 9 games after the Missouri State collapse.
Interesting that Zach was 18-36 (50%) 12-22 3's (54.5%) the four games prior to that (including the Missouri State game)
Zach was Matty & Dick's post game player guest on WJBC after that Missouri State game. He put all the blame on himself for trying to pick up the ball instead of just falling on it. Seems like he may have never gotten over that last play and what may have transpired after the game.

I would hope he didn't shoulder all the blame for that. There was plenty that went wrong and no one person is responsible for that loss.

I don't know if I read into it too much, but Dan is always stressing body language. I know I will get called soft, but I wonder if Dan does a good enough job being positive with players and building them up? If he is willing to call them out in the media, I can't imagine what is said behind closed doors is any better. That is purely speculative, but it never seems like body language improved with certain players.

I keep hearing that Dan is calling out individual players in the media, yet I have not heard that from him. What am I missing?

Here are a couple from the Belmont game.

“He just doesn't compete and he's not coachable. That happened last year a bunch of times. I'll do it again,” said Muller of benching Yarbrough for long stretches.

“We've talked a lot about commitment on the defensive end for a long time now,” said Muller. “Unfortunately, this team is going to have to take multiple losses for them to actually get it because they're not listening.

If I am still teaching them offense this late in the year, they must be pretty stupid.

Every single one of these quotes reflects badly on Muller. Does he not get this?

More quotes = poor coaching decisions. Either bringing wrong guys into program or not developing right guys in right areas.

I have no info on Copeland. In St. Louis there was buzz he might be looking into leaving. Just as there was buzz that he was staying.

He’s a good student who was only ineligible because he bombed a single online test. Which caused him to not pass a class by the smallest of margins. And he had a professor that was pretty heartless about the situation.
.

I do not know Copeland as a student but to (1) not qualify academically out of high school (I am presuming that since he went juco and I could be wrong), (2) to not complete the necessary work/grades at the original juco level to make it into ISU, (3). To not pass an online test and the course at Parkland to qualify again, makes it hard to believe he is a “good” student. It sucks he missed it by the slightest of margins but JFC academic integrity is way more important then passing someone so they can play basketball. Sounds like the professor should be known for their integrity vs their heartlessness. Sorry Mel but seems like Copeland had ample opportunities to be playing last year and if the peeps around Copeland are blaming a professor then that is sad. Hopefully that experience motivated Copeland in a positive manner.

Josh Jefferson might also be out. I talked to his mom on Friday night and she was sharing the same information. It was mostly about the intimidation tactics of Muller. If they make a mistake they are out.

Do with it what you will

I'm starting to really see that. Did you see how Phil got yelled at during the Drake game? Like what could he have possibly done -- it's Phil! He comes to play every game, yeah he might done something a little wrong but why the public humiliation? Why not just calmly walk over and tell him. I'm sure Phil would've listened.

I remember last year when Madison hit a big three and a timeout was called. Muller yelled at him. At first I thought it was a positive outburst, but Madison must've done something wrong, as if he murdered somebody ... geez, I felt sorry for the young man. I remember his expression was like wtf???? That's gotta be tough to play under the gun like that, with one mistake and you're out. Playing under that kinda of pressure causes more mistakes to happen imo.

I can't agree with you more. I posted about this on another thread. Muller is way too quick to bench or chew out a guy for a mistake. Maybe in 1997 this worked....maybe. it certainly won't work in 2019 with the type if characters he recruits

I agree and these are a small sample. There are plenty on the post-game show that most don't hear. I really wish it still would work out with Dan, but it is going to take some humbling on his part.

I don't believe that every year our roster turns over just because there are a lot of transfer in college basketball. Someone needs to sit down with Dan and evaluate how he can become better and relate with players. If you just treat players as pawns on your path to your next job, it's never going to work. So far this approach hasn't gained the results he and ISU fans want and he will eventually be unemployed.

I don’t know if he qualified or not out of high school. It’s not uncommon for someone to be a qualifier out of HS and go 1-2 years at juco due to lack of offers or not preferred offers.
(2) to not complete the necessary work/grades at the original juco level to make it into ISU,(3). To not pass an online test and the course at Parkland to qualify again, makes it hard to believe he is a “good” student.

I don’t believe the online test he took was at parkland. It was his juco in California.

From how I understood it, Cope was doing fine in the class. Final exam was worth like 50% or some big % of the grade. He bombed the online test. Maybe it was lack of preparation. Maybe it was he’s not a good online test taker and he felt rushed. Nobody knows.

I do know some students have really good gpa’s but when it comes to big Tests like the ACT or SAT they don’t do well. Doesn’t make them bad students. Just bad test takers.

Here’s the thing about this, since the professor was back in California and Copeland was here in Illinois, not much could be done (re-take the test, bonus work, extra credit, etc). I do believe that stuff does happen in academia. It did when I was in college, especially when someone was extremely close on a higher grade / passing the class.

I know that’s a ton of what if’s. And who knows where the truth lies.

Mistakes made in games are a byproduct of low basketball IQ. The development of which should be done by the coach(es) in practices. Games are the test. If players are failing the test, they have not been prepared enough through practices to excel and make good decisions during games.

With that said, Muller has no rhyme or reason to his subbing patterns. He leaves his favorites in after mistakes, subs others immediately after a mistake, then also subs out a player who is "hot". It literally has no flow and no explanation.

Not a good year of coaching at all by him in many areas from chemistry, to IQ to in game preparation/adjustments. Plus the overriding player development standpoint.

Losing these guys would suck. Jefferson and Copeland fell into the "get subbed after each mistake" category. Hein made so many mistakes (on the offensive end) it would be impossible to leave him in for more than a minute each time.
I think Hein was left in for too many minutes because he worked really hard in practice. But how does that help us in a game?

Tricky spot for Muller here. If he is adamant that how you perform in practice will get rewarded with increased playing time, he loses all respect if he doesn't abide by that mantra. Hence Hein playing more than he probably should.

I wasn't really talking about how hard someone works in practice. More that practices are the classroom work and games are the tests. If the team is not performing well in the classroom, then they aren't going to perform well on the tests. That's on Dan. Hein working hard in practice and then earning PT because of it is not the problem. But, when Hein starts to struggle during a game, then it clearly shows hard work is not enough. It takes much more than working hard to excel during a game. Talent helps for starters.

I rarely think Dan ever does ever does himself a favor when he speaks.

Wasn't Copeland one of the practice team superstars last year? Weren't he and Chastain named captains as well? Maybe two ways to look at that - the first was that the "to be seniors" weren't the type of leaders Dan wanted, which should have been a red flag looking back, but may bode well next season. Another, more pessimistic view is that this sounds eerily similar to the way some talk up our practice team now...

In any event, I do hope this is not true and I am growing increasingly weary of the revolving door. I think Copeland can be a heck of a player for us next year.

Count me in as not wanting to see either Copeland or Jefferson transfer. I think Zach just hit a wall and couldn't get back in the flow towards the second half of the season. I think both of them would improve after their first taste of the MVC and come back better for the experience.

I haven't been to any practices this year but was wondering what the strengths and weaknesses of the transfer players are. There must be something to our bigs because DM said he wasn't looking to add one which makes me feel that he is pleased with what he has seen.

Rick Majerus was a raging asshole behind the scenes, and per many on here, is the key to Moser’s success. Not to mention Majerus was known for putting together some low character teams. Brought bad student/citizens Paris McCurdy and Curtis Kidd to Ball State.

But Dan can’t yell at a player? Didn’t he learn from the red ass Stallings? Our guys too soft to be treated like actual D1 basketball players? I’ll guarantee, there are mid major D1 girl athletes that get non-constructive verbal abuse far beyond what Dan delivers. And I’m guessing Dan is not rifling basketballs from the faces of our players when they make mistakes in practice. There’s actual abuse out there. I don’t believe Dan is overly harsh, and if that perception is true, ISU has some fragile players.

It appears to me that Copeland doesn’t have any option other than to stay here unless he wants to drop down to D2. His clock runs out next year. As for JJ I hope he realizes that he’s gonna get lots of PT next year.

Unless he can somehow finish his degree and grad transfer.

This is very good advice. It would be great if someone in admin. followed up on it.

Tasers. That's what is missing. I've been absolutely bewildered but I think it's tasers. When the lights go out for intros, we shine our tasers. BAM.

Wait. Now I'm wondering. Hmmmn. Use on players? Or fans?
