And 500+ yards of offense. Ironically also an early afternoon kickoff. I'd be happy with a repeat performance.
Just saw Facebook memories pop up from tailgating for this game. The day before the forecast said 100% chance of rain and it rained pretty hard for awhile in the morning. This was during renovations so we were in the student services lot and the only ones dedicated enough to be there in early in the morning. Good times!

I was wondering why a home opener only drew 4800. I thought part of it may have been the renovations, but the rain definitely explains the rest.

Our food theme that week was spirited food, so everything was made with alcohol in it. They may have helped our attitudes about the weather.

I'll predict 45-14.

I'm most interested in the defense this game. Offense is usually close to a sure 40+ points vs PFL (aside from last year) and the performance usually doesn't tell us much about the group (see Butler 2021).

It's not a prediction but something to shoot for. The last time we played Dayton in 2012 the Redbirds rolled up 56 points. Sweet!

I could go for a repeat of the 2012 season looking back. FBS win over Eastern Michigan. 2 OT dual between Brown and Garoppolo. The blocked XP against App State. 9-4 overall. Should've done better than 3-3 at home, but only road loss @ EWU.

The game notes have been known to fib. If the coaches want to maintain some mystery about our lineup, that's fine. I won't discuss the discrepancies until Sunday.
Ok, I'll throw one out there. They want to see DL Steven Curtis in live action. He's in the two-deep.

The Pantagraph has the more authentic 2-deep. I still expect to see Curtis on the D-Line.

Far be it for me to argue with you, TR, and I have no horse in the race, just posted the game notes I saw. But in what world is the newspaper's "two deep" more "authentic" than the one put out by the football team/athletic department? Why would they be different? Just trying to fool the opponents? Or the Marquee announcers?? ;)

Anyway, great if they have more than two in the two-deep at a few slots, more guys to step up and get it going!

Fair question. I could speculate and provide an answer, but it would be nothing more than speculation.
We will have the answer on who plays in less than 24 hours so sit tight. I think you'll find that The Pantagraph was provided more up-to-date information.

Marquee announcers don't need any help to be fooled

I can see a game in the 40+ to 10+ ... given first game for mostly new defense, I'll go with 42 to 17.

Nice first game for the Birds - O looked very good - D had some moments and will need to shore up front line some before the Jackrabbits come to town. Nice to see a kicker regularly kick into the endzone for touchbacks

Happy about the win. Defense has a lot of room for growth. Need to improve tackling. Our pass rush seemed decent, but once we got past their blocks they seemed slow to chase down the quarterback. Dayton moved the chains too easily for my liking. The outgoing transfers will be missed.

Offense was good, but our line was no match for them. I'm not a huge fan of the roll out flip pass from Zack. That's what led to the fumble. Flip pass as Nelson is turning up field on a play like that is a nightmare waiting to happen. I'd rather Zack keep it on those plays because he has full vision of the field. I don't like the play design and I think some blame has to go to OC Peterson for the turnover. Overall, pretty happy with the offense. Great game for Kasper.

Good to see some consistency from the kicking game. Wagner has a huge leg. His run up seems a little slow on field goals and I can't help but worry when we face stronger, quicker teams.

Passing game timing looked better- I’d guess that opponent defenses will be preparing for the corner fade during ISUr week. After seeing how good the WR-pass worked, hated that they showed it in a game like today. Kicking game distance and accuracy helped keep the Birds in good field position today. Nice to get back to football- I feel a lot better than I did last year after Valpo.

I rarely have a game management gripe but why do they have the drinking fountains shut off? Typical hot- sunny Labor Day weekend that could have been even worse. Appreciate the one water bottle refill station down at the south end of the east side. It was a long walk and some folks said it was ice cold until it ran dry during halftime with a big line of fans including yours truly. I have no problem with prohibition on outside food-drink but seems like having drinking fountain water turned off goes a little far on the “concessions to the concessionaire” scale.

I watched the game with my 95-year-old dad and my 8-year-old grandson so needless to say there were a few distractions. Agree with Mills, if I never see another shovel pass it will be just fine. I really like the Oline. They got some good push. No surprise our backs are good. We have a good QB. Thank you Heller Motors! The defense can work on their run fits but I'm not complaining because only a dope complains about a SHUTOUT! Go State!

I was watching the first couple of Redbird drives and thinking to myself...is this a Redbird team? Playing at tempo, throwing the ball around, throwing to the tight end, still running the ball well and the O-line having a solid day? Very encouraging on the offensive side of the ball. The Defense is very young and needs to tackle better. I heard Spack at halftime saying they needed to get off their blocks and tackle better. They did in the second half. They did bend some but they did not break. It is a shutout but only because a kicker missed a couple of field goals. I am not complaining, I think if the kicker makes those field goals the only difference is a 41-6 result. Annexstad was just very impressive I thought. He was putting the ball right where it needed to be. Sobkowicz had a chance to pull in a couple of TDs but could not hang on. Annexstad had the ball right where it needed to be to make the play. No hit on Sobkowicz, They were not easy catches but the receiver had a chance to make the play. I asked about special teams in a different post and the special teams looked good today. I am looking forward to seeing how they do next week at Western.
