From a statistical standpoint, it would be near impossible for them to have picked the only 11 transactions with personal charges that cannot be covered or spending outside of policy. Even if they did, we are talking expenses submitted by highly experienced people who have years of experience working at public universities, following policies like this. Ignorance of the policy or continued “forgetfulness” or “mistakes” is not an excuse.

An AD who is a lawyer and was a compliance person, I believe can be held to a higher expectations standard. Just like is done for chief executives, teachers, first responders, etc.

One question I have after seeing this: were any of the fancy Nike shoes that Brennan was frequently showing on Twitter purchased outside of the athletic equipment purchase policy? If he is allowed to purchase them at cost as part of the Nike equipment deal, fine. If he paid less than the policy requires or nothing at all whereas he should have paid for them, we have a problem.

Your posts regarding this whole ordeal have definitely been insightful. Your concluding paragraph is out of that rhythm and feels personal...like you have a serious bone to pick with Brennan.

At this point, if anyone had a bone to pick with him how could anyone say that is out of line? The damage done to the department by this, both reputationally and in upcoming performance, should leave every person on this board with a bone to pick.

I mean he loved to flaunt his sneaker game. We know he wasn’t doing things by the book and was submitting personal items for reimbursement. Seems like a valid question with how pricy the resale market can get on sneakers.

Eagerly await the Doug Sutton color-coded thesis about how this isn't anyone's fault and his understanding is many businesses expense chapstick and alcohol and someone is out to get the department.
He's on the 8 o'clock show tonight, right after Bring It, with @Sladerunningbear at 7. A GREAT evening lineup!

The university revealed an audit that questions expenses and points out, at minimum, a lack of control under his leadership. Considering the expensing of personal products, and the very public nature of Brennan’s shoe collection, it is a very fair question to ask. I would hope an audit would discover if there are inventory control issues or if policies about personal purchases need to be revised/enforced.

My concern would be the same, whether the person was Brennan, John Doe, Jane Doe, or my next door neighbor. I would ask the same question if we were talking the same concerns with Leanna Bordner, Mike Williams, Dan Muller, Kristen Gillespie, or Ryan Pedon. I just have zero tolerance for this type of activity.

If Brennan purchased the shoes he Tweeted about on his own, at cost, or within contractually appropriate methods, great. Than nothing to worry out. However, with this news and how truly eye-opening these audit results are, it brings about warranted questions of how much in personal expenses were racked up and why it was allowed. That would include any control issues or audit findings related to equipment, inventory, or other purchases/expenses.

I wouldn’t think that Brennan was buying these sneakers to sell them, but we have documented evidence that warrants the question being asked about equipment policies and state purchase rules/laws being followed.

Did the audit specifically say that Kyle was improperly reimbursed for personal expenses? The WGLT article says there was a specific finding about his “reimbursement submission habits”. There is a later discussion of Brennan not getting Presidential approval before before submitting to the Comptroller or UA, and in the next bullet point there’s a general statement that there were prohibited or questionable purchases found. Maybe the audit does say he was improperly reimbursed for personal stuff, but I didn’t find it in the article (which I admit was a slog to wade through)

Hey Reggie. No question everything is up for grabs right now, even receipts for the Skittles bag he purchased in 2021. I get it. I've enjoyed your insightful posts. They have depth! It just felt personal. My first thought was...the dude did make roughly 300K a year. My second thought was...dude definitely has a lot of shoes and he wasn't shy about letting the world know.

Forget Brennan. This continuing audit and ripple effect (blame it completely on Brennan if you want, RBF) is going to present things that are fair points and unfair points...because of the magnification involved. Things will be exposed - as they should. Things will be completely blown out of proportion. So be it.

For the record - objectively - I personally had no problem with Kyle and that's the perspective from which I write. The rumblings regarding Kyle - and specifically how he treated staff & beyond - really exponentiated when the Prez was fired. Matter of fact that evening at the game that's all I heard from many people actively in the know. It was like people received permission to talk about it publicly. Took me by surprise...knowing what I know now, maybe it shouldn't have.

We make our own bed. As i think about that, God help me.

I think ISU kind of lucked out on her being available to do this. If interim President wants to be President then she will probably be in this position for a bit more than 6 months. Nothing will happen over the summer. Search for a president, then “new” President will want to hire their own person and that search will take place and I do not see an already working AD leaving their current position until end of Academic year, so hopes she stays until next May.

Gary Barta is retiring from Iowa. He raised a lot of money for the Hawks as long as you don't mind the lawsuits he brought against the University.
