More on Milik's draft possibilities

https://www.si.com/nba/2018/01/08/nba-draft-mid-major-prospects-watch-alize-johnson-mike-daum

Sure would hurt to lose Malik to the NBA after this season.

He has been on record claiming he is "tired" of transferring. NBA Draft wouldn't be transferring. His major is university studies. A lot if times, people with that major aren't really sure what they want to after school or don't take school seriously, just taking random classes to get by. Nothing wrong with that. Producer of the Dan Patrick show, Paul Pabst says it best. "C's get degrees"

Hopefully he stays another year to refine his craft.

If I had to guess he does what Johnson did last year, test the draft waters and get feedback as to what he would need to improve on, and then comes back for his final year to do that.

While I think the scouts will be interested in Malik this season and summer, I don't think they are going to look at him with "NBA Roster" thoughts in their mind until they have a much larger sample size. I fully expect him to explore his options, but not hire an agent. I also fully expect him to come back next year and flat out dominate the league with Fayne and Evans (And Copeland, Chastain and Bruninga). He really has only had, in his college career, about 2 months of servicable game minutes to get data from. I expect that he will attend a camp and add 10-15 lbs in the off season then come back. THAT is when you will start seeing scouts at ISU every single game be is South Carolina or Quincy. Of course, I really think they will have scouts there next year for the big 3 anyway.

What a good problem to have, right?

Milik is frustrating. I feel like he could be our most talented offensive threat since Osiris. But his head gets in the way and his inability or unwillingness to hustle and play defense consistently just make him an unlikable player to me. He’s like the “Anti-Tony Wills” to me. Tony hustled his butt off but wasn’t a flashy offensive player.

That said, if we had Milik at the 2 last year instead of Wills, we are SOOOO much better. A team with a 2 that can’t score is going nowhere. That was the missing piece.

For Milik to jump to the NBA he needs to be a first round lock - which means being among the top 15-20 college players. If he bulldozes the Valley and owns Arch Madness, MAYBE he shows enough in the NCAAs to crack the first round, in which case: Godspeed, Milik.

But second round contracts aren't even guaranteed; five years ago Adunk, Recon and I ate the saddest cheese balls ever waiting for Jackie's draft moment, only to instead watch him bounce around Summer League as a UFA and settle in Europe. (Recon and I then ate even sadder wings three years later sweating Marshaun's draft. Our motto: Live. Don't learn.) I'd hate to see Milik pass up an epic senior year without getting a real shot in the NBA.

Like the players who brought the Cubs their first championship in 108 years, Milik and this group can achieve legend status and never have to pay for a beer in Normal again if they stay together and deliver Redbird Basketball back to the NCAA Tournament.

I don't know that we are soooo much better. Offensively, sure, a completely different player - but - chemistry goes a long way on a team. And what Tony 'lacked' in offensive giddyup(he wasn't bad, mind you, just not great) he more than made up for in defensive and overall team presence.

I do believe on last year's team I'd take Tony, looking at the entire perspective...especially from a TEAM concept.

I think it would be wise if he stayed. I figure next year's team can get into the big dance and make some waves, get him the attention at the national level. Like that big guy from Bradley got when they made it into the sweet 16.
