I don’t post here often. I am an ISU grad but a big UW fan. For those reasons I hate this game. Here is some insight on UW. Side note- we cancelled our last game due to Covid so we’re not really sure who is playing. Here are the starting 5:
C- Steven Crowl- 7ft soph- can stretch the floor and hit from the outside, not very strong in the post, good passer. 3pt% has not been good and has been somewhat of a disappointment,
PF- Tyler Wahl- 6’9” JR- a poor man Ethan’s Happ. Can rebound, pass, block, steal, and score in the post. He is very patient with the ball. Decent FT shooter but poor outside shooter.
SF- Johnny Davis- 6’5” soph- this kid has a motor. He’s good for 20 pts a game. He’s comfortable attacking the rim and shooting from anywhere on the floor. Excellent mid range game. Avg 3pt %.
SG- Brad Davison- 6’3”- 5thyr sr- gritty as hell. Doesn’t attack the rim much but has done it on occasion. Not a strong mid range game, strong 3%. Reminds you of someone who would have played under Dick Bennett.
PG- Chucky Hepburn- 6’ FR- good ball handler, excellent defending. Not much of a scorer and when he does score it’s usually attacking the rim.

Bench
C- Chris Vogt- 7’- SR- Strong rebounder, avg big man on defense, no outside game, can score inside 5 ft but it usually getting his points off offensive rebounds. He’s starting to get more minutes than Crowl
F- Ben Carlson- 6’10” SO- not sure what to make of him. More of a slasher. He’s not one to post up in the lane. Can hit from the outside but hasn’t shown it this season. He’s coming off of major back surgery.
F- Carter Gilmore- 6’5” SO- meh, good defense, hasn’t shown anything on offense.
G- Lorne Bowman- 6’1” FR- he did post on Twitter he has Covid before Christmas. Not sure he plays. Good shooter and can attack the rim. Likes to hunt his shot and not afraid to pull the trigger for 3. Decent shooting %.
G- Jacobi Neath- 6’2” JR- he has been injured and then was sick so is lacking in playing time. Not a great shooter. Can get to the rim. He seems raw still in a new system. He transferred from Wake Forest.

overall- UW is pesky on defense. I image Reeves will get some buckets, but points will be hard to come by for the Redbirds. UW usually cleans up on rebounds and the guards aren’t afraid to rebound as well. UW don’t foul much. The pick and roll defense has some holes in it but they switch rather well. UW struggles guarding big men down low but I don’t think ISU posses that type of threat. I’m talking EJ Liddell at Ohio St type big men.

Offensively UW is not a good shooting team. Even from inside they will miss bunnies. UW is a decent FT shooting team. UW doesn’t turn the ball over. If ISU wants to win this game I am going to steal a line from Clark Kellogg, 3s and frees. ISU will need to force UW to hit 3s, which they aren’t good at, and I expect UW to force it in and make ISU hit 3s as well. And if ISU can get to the line, make your FT. The crowd at the Kohl center has been meh..and it is break so I don’t expect much as far as students.

If UW has all their player I expect them to hit the 16 point spread, but if they are missing multiple players still with Covid it could be interesting. UW has been off since December 15. Winning at UW would be huge for ISU. My one fear if that happens is it might keep Dan around for another year.

hope that gives you all some insight on Wisconsin.

Do you have any favorite places around the arena?
My go-to for many years is the Main Depot, a "down-home" tavern with several TVs that gets crowded but has its charm. Parking nearby ($10 or $20?), free street parking if your timing is right, some crafts on tap and also bottles, short menu - bar food, burgers, etc. Its a two block walk from the Kohl Center. Everybody knows your name. ;)

Echo Tap is a block down, little more upscale, better menu than Main Depot, same basic deal tho, parking on the street, but lotsa crafts on tap (more than Main Depot), craft flights, etc. Also two block walk or so.

Nitty Gritty is a "legendary" Madison bar (Steve Miller got his career going here - yeah its been going for 50 years or so), more a restaurant now, but still known for good burgers, good crafts on tap. One block to the Kohl Center, but I can't vouch for parking over that way. Think you can get in the ramp across the street.

Buckinghams's is also a short block to the Kohl, have no idea how crowded it gets pre-game, but it is close, and parking might be more of an issue there. Have eaten lunch there many times but not pre-game.

Thank you for the insight. Really looking forward to this game.

Are there any reasonably walkable free places to park? If not, where is the best place to park?

I've always found parking to be a big pain around there. We would go to the state wrestling meet and get dinged every time we left between sessions. Until we ate lunch at the Panera on Regent. It's across the tracks from Kohl. Big building with a big lot. Short walk if you can still do it. It's been a few years.

I've been parking in the same area since Kohl Center opened, so I really don't know all the territory around for parking.

Timmy's idea about the "strip mall" parking lot where Panera is might be a good one - couldn't really get closer to the arena.

I have always found free street parking along either Main St. or Bedford Street, which on a good day puts you a couple blocks away from Kohl, maybe a 5-10 minute walk. Also street parking along Regent St. in the same area. This is basically south of the Kohl Center. There are also a couple surface lots in this area that are $10 or $20. And a couple pre-game bars available too. There are apartments in this area and tenants are parking there too, so it isn't like totally wide open, and it is 2 hour parking until 6pm in most places.

I'll link the official parking map from UW. There are a couple ramps north of the Kohl Center which would be a block or two or three walk, and some pre-game spots for refreshments available. Says $15 parking.

The good news is students aren't around and most games so far the crowds have been so-so, so I wouldn't think its gonna be totally buzzing. Some of the hard core and students and all are in Vegas for the bowl game.

So Redbird North then?

It was changed so guides may show the wrong game. Which game does it show? I know Illini are cancelled so if it's them that's why.
I think it was NC-Asheville at Indiana that went by the 'rona wayside.

Plenty to learn in a game like this. In some ways its good to have this be the final noncon game right before Valley play, rather than having it in November. Just play hard, don't back down.

Do we have confirmation on anyone out. It was mentioned Sissoko didn’t make the trip. Benson had no clue. Howard Fleming has been silent on Instagram and usually pretty active. Couldn’t tell if he was with any other players in their short clips. Probably nothing though.

I just stopped by the Horseshoe Casino. The spread is Wisconsin by 17 as of about an hour ago. I hope UW plays like they did their last 2 games vs Nichols State and Ohio State. Go BIRDS!

We are 1-3 lifetime vs Badgers - back in 1996 we beat em good in Madison

Isn’t it 1-2? We played them in the post season of ‘95-96 and won. Then we played them in the Non conference in both ‘97-‘98 and ‘98-‘99.

That most recent matchup was a loss at Redbird arena.
