REDBIRDS WIN!
some notes from the game
1. Defense wins games !
2. Banks played good, has to get the team involved more as lead point guard (1:5 AST/TO)
3. Lieb and Kasubke unsung heroes
4. FOSTER & LEWIS NEED MORE TOUCHES (Foster 67% off 6 shots tonight)
5. Burford looking like himself again.

Explain please… never said they are bad people but they didn’t advance the program. The same group of guys that got Dan fired are on Yaks bench. After many on here claimed Yak was a defensive guru and college bball genius this is the best staff he could assmeble? Zero key Chicago guys on his staff. He is what he is. He made good money before the big boys figured out that he was a fraud
Tony played on the team that went 17-1 in MVC, was first 4 out of NCAA, and got Dan an extention. Yak and Oliver left and Dan hired crappy replacement assistants that couldn't recruit or coach. That's is what got Dan fired.

I saw that too.... as for Pence it is early in his career but 6 games into it is difficult to see him playing effectively this year at this level. He looks like he his constantly struggling. Too bad a redshirt is not an option.
With each passing game, I thoroughly agree ore and more. Outside-looking-in, seems like an RS might have been a more fruitful option. Especially the more it looks like this rotations will need to settle in for simple execution purposes.

UIC’s coaching staff is funny. Yak bringing on the same losers that helped bury ISU’s bball program. Get him a crown though. He a basketball genius!
Whatever. Tony Wills was a VERY solid player and a guy I would love to have around instilling tough defense.There's nothing about "loser" in that cat.

Post game observations. Lieb made two really good post moves inside when we were making our run. Very pleased to see that. The D match up for him limited his minutes as the guy he was guarding was mostly playing outside. But his play was a positive. Banks and Kasubke missedFTs but are normally good shooters. I really liked that we only put up 10 threes and took it to the rack and either scored or drew fouls. Still way too many turnovers of course. But we took what UIC gave us. Our defense in the last 30 minutes was outstanding. All in all I view this game as improvement as UIC is athletic and well coached.

I think someone else posted this, maybe Grad2011. No one is calling for Pedon's job. You're saying three years. Minimum. Okay - when should we care about progress? Three seasons is roughly 95-100 games. At 14-24 we're 40% into that. Personally, I am in on Pedon. I don't want him fired. I believe they'll get better. I believe in his mission and the way he recruits the Midwest and his embracing the community. I think he's the right guy for the job. Evaluating though, we're ten games under .500. Our offense just doesn't work. He hired a staff where one assistant never coached a game and we have no clue why. He hired another to be DOBO and promoted him to assistant and he'd never done the job before. The rest of the staff outside of Judson, who is really only here as a figurehead, are under 25 years old. We don't have a lot of measurable progress to point to. I feel like that is where the criticism on here comes from and those are real red flags, not just message board talk.
I take issue with your description of Rob Judson as a “figurehead.” That is not how many highly regarded Illinois high school coaches would describe him. He is well known for his integrity and honesty.

The Banksford Game

We talked on here earlier in the day about finding some go-to guys...well, both DBs took over last night. Really good road W. Down 13 early, then 6 at half and never panicked, just kept things steady the whole second half. Also nice that we got the W and only attempted 10 from beyond the arc. Amazing what can happen when we consistently get into the lane and attack the basket.

Agree with this. I have no inside knowledge, I'm convinced tho that Judson is a key player on the coaching team. He's sat on some high level benches, Marquette and Indiana, besides his HC stint at NIU. Pedon leans on him, I'm sure. Lots of experience. I'm convinced his contacts from Marquette have played a role in the recruiting success in Wisconsin. Maybe not, but I believe it.

As for the UIC game, I was out for dinner and only got home in time to watch the last 10 minutes or so, and while I wasn't totally confident, it was nice to watch us hold on down the stretch, get some key boards, some times hit key free throws - :oops: - and look relatively in control. It was interesting looking at the box that the shooting seemed to come around last night, shooting percentage. Outrebounded UIC, Foster did his job. 19 TO's??? WTF?? All in all, something to build on.

If you think we’re slow, wait until we play Indiana St. They are quick and their quickness totally stymied SIU Tuesday night.
It was the only indiana state game (vs siu) that I have watched this year but their offense looks really good. I have watched a good amount of college games already this year and their offense has been one of better ones I have seen. Good shot selection, ball movement, outside/inside/slashing and finishing. If they can defend relatively well they will be a real tough team to beat.

Well if you were out for dinner during that first half that was time very well spent. If you had a good dinner then you had a great entire night!

One of my favorite plays I like to see a coach set-up is when a guard is able to post-up and score off another guard. Burford did that several times.

I don’t think the breaks in the schedule are the problem with this team…

To answer, yes. If I told you blind test you can practice and recover from injuries for 8 days or you can play 4 times in 7 days with flights to and from the Bahamas included, which would you choose?

1) The team that practiced and recovered from injuries for 8 days came out and played the 1st half like a team that had not played a game in 8 days, but finally got on track in the 2nd half.
2) The team that played 4 times in 7 days with flights to and from the Bahamas came out picking up where they left off playing in the Bahamas, but in the 2nd half ran out of gas because of the 4 games in 7 days with travel to and from the Bahamas.

So in conclusion:
Did the team that had not played in 8 days Win the game because of that;
Did the team that played 4 games in 7 days Lose the game because of that;
Or Did the team that Won the game Win because they were able to overcome the obstacles they faced?

Probably a combination of all of the above. There’s no question UIC hit a wall in the second half though.
