It does bring up a question for me. Can someone give me a good reason why playing in the band (football or bball) is NOT credited?? At least towards general equivalents??

Seems silly to me. Perhaps 1 credit hour per semester in which the student actively participates? Flat 3 hrs a year? I don't know, just seems to me that crediting it makes sense and gives a little THANK YOU to the students who do their part in creating, or trying to create, an electric atmosphere. I always sat next to the band and it WITHOUT QUESTION added to my experience.

its an extracurricular activity. at least playing at games and stuff. just like debate or chess or basketball. they don't get credits for that. it would be cool if they did. they don't get scholarships do they?

3.) What the capacity drops to? I'm going to guess in the 9,600-9,800 range. Considering we rarely get close to 9,000, that's not a bad thing if we're able to create additional revenue off box seats, another suite, etc.

Might seem small potatoes, but I want capacity to remain over 10,000 (hate to say it but you can fudge it with standing room only). There's something about being able to say you play in a 10,000 seat arena. Perhaps it's slight, but I believe it does offer a recruiting edge.

Too bad we don't fill it to that 10K though. Could this be the year we finally join the 10K group again?? Mighty wishful thinking.

But I'll still maintain wishful thinking.

That would be nice. With standing room and adding seats around the court I think it will come up short if they don't find a place for the band that doesn't take up seats. they should have added that into the plans like Baylor's new football stadium.

It wouldn't have to be extracurricular in the way you're saying if the member was somehow involved in obtaining a music education (or something related) major or minor.

I wish more students would come to games. enough to fill both end zones. since they don't I guess its not a big issue because there is always space for the band.

Wow, you are brave for posting that here.

I know you aren't in the band or haven't been in the band, but Hey Baby is a traditional song for BRMM. They have been playing it since forever and it's something that alumni and current members can play when they come together.

Maybe we should stop playing the same song every time we win a game. Come up with a new fight song every year. I mean that's the same thing right? We don't do that because of tradition. Same idea, different song.

Maybe the band should not be soooooooooo dated. Bring it up to speed. Try different things. Its the same 10 songs every game for 15 years
Fair argument. So a couple of things:

They are playing more recent music it seems, but they are going to have standards that they know how to play, cold, at the drop of a hat. Like Hey Baby, Horse, Come on my Wayward Son, songs by Chicago. They just are. Because.....they only meet for one hour a week to practice as a group. Basketball band used to be non-credit. I'm not sure if it still is. So they get no grade, credit hour or anything to be in it. They get to go to games for free. That's it. At least BRMM is for credit hours.

They have a new director this year of the BRMM and pep band so maybe he will try some things.

I have been to most of the home volleyball games this year and the pep band has improved. I felt like they were playing some different things and also playing them "differently". What I mean by that is they seem to play more often and more quick snipits of songs. I hope that keeps up for basketball.
I would rather hear the band play most of the time than listen to some of the music they play over the sound system. If feels way more like a college sports atmosphere when they are playing.
I think the band is great and as others have said, they get pretty much nothing out of it. So they are probably the schools most loyal sports fans when you think about it.
Another point, There were about 8 students in the student section for the volleyball game the other night and probably around 30+ in the pep band. Countless times I have seen the same ratio over the years for football and basketball. BRMM and the pep band are great!

Maybe they could learn Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo! Timeless.

I was kinda thinking AC/DC Hells Bells, yeah that would work too! Aerosmith, Back In The Saddle would work too. I almost teared up when one of the volleyball girls picked AC/DC's Thunderstruck for her throwback jam. Yeah, she could've played it safe and chose a Backstreet Boys song....SO GOD BLESS HER!!!

Will they complete the Redbird Arena project after this basketball season?

I believe I remember hearing an interview with Lyons where he said it would be completed by volleyball season 2019. This was before the funding was approved.

The plan is to start work this spring.

Good news on the approval by the BOT. The bonding strategy will be different, offering bonds to local lenders.

I don't care about attendance capacity. I would love to see a real transformation. Something that helps create atmosphere, whatever that ends up being.

Couldn’t agree more. Great opportunity to improve the atmosphere if they get this right.
