Follow the path of playing Quincys and you have a true death spiral as eventually you won't be able to afford them without any fan base. ISU road schedule is respectable but hard to justify buying season tickets when you look at the upcoming home schedule.

The mighty Big Ten Illini played Lewis and McKendree last year and it is hard to believe they did it for financial reasons.

I'm with our leader on this one. Who at Quincy has pictures of our ADs that nobody wants to see? You want a rollover game with a local team? Call Chicago St, Western, SIUE or another state's bottom D1 teams. Playing DII does nothing.

It. Does. Nothing.

"Well, with 1 starter returning, it could help"

Yes, if that game were being held to kick off the non-con season. But we will have already played a final 4 team, a 26 win conference champion and at least 2 other high level teams. Then we kick off our home slate- a game that will set the minds of all of the freshmen (the largest freshmen class in ISU history) as to what an ISU basketball game is and we welcome in... Quincy.

Bad. Just bad long term planning here, guys. Best case scenario is the Birds win by 25 and put on a dunk clinic so people stay interested. Anything less than a 10 point win will be met with a "well, that is what that is, eh? Okay. Lets go back to Watterson for the other games this season".

Not sure how many Freshmen will be around for this game with it being the day before Thanksgiving. That could possibly be the reasoning behind such a lackluster opponent.

Solid schedule overall and sets us up real nicely for next year.....IF......anyone is still around.

I'd like to see our entire team return next year a-la Wichita to destroy the rest of the Valley and hammer the BYUs and Ole Misses of the world on our home court.

Could be a very very special year indeed. Maybe 30 wins. At-large profile. dancing with a chance to advance and maybe run into Greggy Schmalzzzh.

Money rules all things collegiate. Benson is right. It is basically a risk aversion maneuver for cost/revenue forecasting. Not a lot of folks around for Thanksgiving coupled with a low cost offering. It is the right thing to do from a cost management perspective but a lousy thing for the fans who will pay for this. If you look at past schedules this has always been the case. Now, if it could be banked on that RA would be full then this scenario could change.

I guess I am in the minority, but I do not mind the Quincy game. Since it does not affect SOS and RPI, I would rather them play that game then some 300+ RPI school like Chicago State

I'm in agreement with you Redbird21. Would rather have a non D1 (that won't factor in the RPI) than a D1 dreg that will torpedo ISU's RPI.

Alrighty then, I've got my first post on the new board...wooo hooo!

GO YOU REDBIRDS!

I'm not a huge fan of Quincy coming to Redbird, but I understand it.

We don't have access to what the budget is for buying games this year. I would guess that Charleston Southern is getting a nice payday, so ISU does not have to return the trip there.

Northwestern playing Lewis.

It is what it is. Does it suck to not have a name opponent? Sure. But I'll take this over getting the RPI hit over the Texas Southerns of the world.

That Northwestern comparison is not relevant when looking at the entire schedule.

U of I is playing Augustana. And I'm sure when we played Kentucky, the Wildcat fans were complaining about them playing Illinois St. It's all relative.

I agree.

Learned something new today. Had no idea that it doesn't affect our resume.

I'm guessing around 6-5 record here. Tough road schedule. I like it.

At a glance, I saw about .500. I would consider it a GREAT non-conf result if they could flip 2 of those and go 8-3. Need to overachieve, and not just beat who we are favored to beat.

But yes, a good schedule. Can't beat good teams unless you play them. Great job, Dan.

There is ZERO reason Illinois State should be playing Quincy in a regular season basketball game. Exhibition? Fine, go for it. Short trip for Quincy, great. Feed em DP Dough, whatever.

But for it to be one of our actual home games is a joke and ridiculous. We've done it for a few seasons now and it was dumb then and it gets dumber every year we repeat it. What is the possible upside to this for ISU?

- I'm sure we pay Quincy to come
- The attendance is lower which means less $$$ for ISU
- It doesn't count in the NCAA' s eyes
- What good does it do the team to play them five games into the season? Because we are coming back from PR? Boo hoo. Great, we get to hopefully blow someone out. Look at us, beating up on D2 schools
- And if, God forbid, a major piece of the team gets hurt for the season during this game it will be a complete waste

ISU is better than this. Play Texas Southern for all I care. At least they are a D1 team.

+1

Agree. You are spot on. On fire on everything. I'm thinking 2018-19 has great potential for this program.

It affects our resume. There is an opportunity cost. But it's true, we have to play a Kentucky, not a Chicago State, to really cash in. Or even the fact that our record was 27-6 versus 28-6 in the eyes of the committee. Every digit in that win column helps create optics for our resume.

I looked at Illinois's non conference schedule today. They have 9 games at the State Farm Center and there is no one on there they can't trounce. I don't know why their season ticket holders don't complain. Our brief home schedule looks awesome compared to their's.

No need to play Quincy. None. Sorry. Sure it doesn't count, but it creates a hole in the schedule. RPI? We just saw how much THAT matters  It's a "safe" date to play them right before Thanksgiving because unless it was a big name opponent, we're gonna draw 3K anyway. So therefore, get a Chicago State, Winston-Salem or Bethune-Cookman in there. Who cares if they're a 300+ RPI team that'll win 9 games? These non-DI games in non-exhibition slots need to stop.
