I too thought we were in good shape going into 2022 with our running backs. But we weren't the only ones who overvalued that group. Coach Spack admitted as much in the Pantagraph report on transfers.I could have put this in a couple of threads but it seemed a good place here to talk about the portal. Interesting that the article highlighted the biggest need on offense filled as the running backs. Quite a few comments on the board that thought we were good with the RB pool we have now. Another interesting comment by Coach Spack is there are not many scholarships for High School players due to the Portal. The landscape is certainly changing in college football.
Early signing day ’22: Spack pleased with ‘balance’ in Illinois State recruits
Redbird head coach adds there could be some position moves early in the spring.prairiestatepigskin.com
The big change is in the decline in the number of high school players signing. There are roughly the same number of college prospects graduating from high school each year. So it looks like teams will be less interested in building up players, and those players will slip down a level or so. Then after they prove out at their current level, the teams above will come recruiting them.
Maybe the portal will be good for JUCO football??? A kid who would have been DI in 2018, but now is only seeing DII offers, might instead go the JUCO route. Just speculating.
