The big money is here to stay but I think it could be handled better. What that better way looks like I don't know but the current way reminds me of the old NFL/AFL battle for players before the merger was agreed upon. Money rules all! When you factor in this kind of money and the easy movement with the portal I can see real chaos over the next few years. Not everyone will act with integrity or abide by the rules, what rules there are remaining. One university finds a diamond in the rough and they develop him into a stud player for a FCS or Group of 5 program. A representative of one of the Big Boys quietly approaches the player with an offer of millions of dollars if he just enters the portal and moves to their program. Everyone knows this kind of thing will happen if it is not happening already.

It really is incredible what has happened to college football in a short few years. I was thinking about the Tattoo scandal at Ohio State that cost Jim Tressel his job as head coach. The players were selling some memorabilia and got discounts at a local tattoo parlor and Tressel attempted to cover it up. It cost him his job. That was 2010 just 12 years ago. Discounts on tattoos was a huge scandal and now players are getting offers of $800,000 a year to play. Wow!
If the players had ended up forming a union it would have been fun to see them collectively bargain a P5 salary cap/luxury tax/NIL floor.

The University’s should be the ones paying the student/athlete’s. They are making millions off of the players. Instead they pocket the money and let the players get paid by NIL. I think that each university should have a set amount that they can use for paying their players. This amount should be set by the NCAA and it should be the same amount for every school. Maybe a percentage from the NCAA Tournament television revenue could go into a pool that would help the smaller schools. I know this will never happen, but just my $0.02
They are..called a scholarship and depending on the school it's anywhere from $40k to 100k depending on the school and 4 one year contracts

Not to mention, currently all tax free .. so long as they are not employees.

Then there is the whole workers compensation aspect ... which goes down rabbit hole of both medical compensation for life (if workplace injury warrants) and indemnity payments to replace lost income ... they'll have fun figuring out the latter for a college student with NFL hopes !!!

Bottom line .. they are ruining a good thing going down this compensation and employment path .. 98% of these student-athletes are either way overpaid or adequately paid with their scholarship, various perks (meals, gear, etc), and those that offer total COA stipends.

Well, that did not take long, did it?

shocking that something so pure and innocent like NIL would get corrupted !!!!!!

I dunno .. maybe it's the money thing ... just a hunch.

Probably best to let P5 breakaway, so they can "police" themselves .. I mean, what could go wrong putting P5 in charge of themselves ???

They are paying them, it’s called a “scholarship”.
College sports are so ruined.

On a more serious note we've seen this happen before with the Olympics. They tried to remain amateur but it didn't work. Are the Olympic games ruined? They're different and some might long for the old days but the Olympics remain popular and so will college athletics.

And the scholarship was fine until the money got to be ridiculous. A scholly is pennies out of their 9-figure budget. This an example of paying minimum wage to your most valuable assets while the execs get millions.

Yeah it's tough. They deserve more than 20k a year for all the money they bring into school, especially ones that have jersey sales and are on billboards and such. I get it and I agree. But.....there has to be some checks and balances too. And that part is lacking.

Give them the scholarship, but then keep any proceeds from likeness sales (jerseys, posters, etc.) in some sort of a trust and when they graduate, they get that money.
This madness has to end.

Big difference in my opinion.
Other countries were always using “professionals”.
Before they allowed US to use our professional athletes, it was similar to ISU football competing in the SEC without the added scholarships or getting any revenue sharing.

Completely agree . . . but completely unconvinced that’ll happen.

I could have put this in a couple of threads but it seemed a good place here to talk about the portal. Interesting that the article highlighted the biggest need on offense filled as the running backs. Quite a few comments on the board that thought we were good with the RB pool we have now. Another interesting comment by Coach Spack is there are not many scholarships for High School players due to the Portal. The landscape is certainly changing in college football.

Actually Virginia, I went back and re-read the article because I had the same first impression as you regarding the "biggest need". My second interpretation is that the article was focusing on the FILLED part, not the NEED. So, the RB's we got were better than the OL or WR (the one and only WR) or the TE. I don't think Verdun was saying that was our biggest need, just that the "fill" was the best. I think.

It's clear that we weren't as deep (talentwise) at RB last season as we had hoped. Still, I was surprised that this was listed as our biggest offensive need. To me WR is clearly the greatest offensive need with so many players exiting (Tristan Bailey, Brock Annexstad, J'Kalon Carter, Jabari Khepera, TreShawn Watson).

I'm only slightly surprised that the D-Line was listed as the greatest defensive need. We did lose several players but I like the younger players that are waiting in the wings. Cornerback is my biggest concern. My guess is that one or more RBs will be moved to defense. Maybe Phaleak Brown, Sean Allen. I don't see immediate help in the players that just signed. The Juco guy that could play right away (Hodgdon) is projected as a Safety.
Franky West has some offers from the transfer portal but it doesn't appear that he signed anywhere. Any chance that he might return? Remember Vandenburgh tested the portal waters and then decided to stay and tear it up as a Redbird. That worked out very well all around. If the bridge between West and Redbird Football collapsed, then build it back. It's a Win-Win.

The Verdun article lists the tallest Redbird recruits as being 6'5 ignoring Ivan Erickson who has been consistently listed at 6'6. I have a standing offer to proofread all Dan V. articles before they go to press. I was willing to help with his book too but he didn't ask.

Could well be. I was disappointed with the WR addition. Not the player but the number. I thought WR was an area we could have added a few more players and maybe they will. It is not done yet.

I am a firm believer that you win and lose on the lines. The rest of the positions don't mean so much if you can not control the line of scrimmage. Not glamorous work but that is the foundation.
