I could have put this in a couple of threads but it seemed a good place here to talk about the portal. Interesting that the article highlighted the biggest need on offense filled as the running backs. Quite a few comments on the board that thought we were good with the RB pool we have now. Another interesting comment by Coach Spack is there are not many scholarships for High School players due to the Portal. The landscape is certainly changing in college football.

I too thought we were in good shape going into 2022 with our running backs. But we weren't the only ones who overvalued that group. Coach Spack admitted as much in the Pantagraph report on transfers.

The big change is in the decline in the number of high school players signing. There are roughly the same number of college prospects graduating from high school each year. So it looks like teams will be less interested in building up players, and those players will slip down a level or so. Then after they prove out at their current level, the teams above will come recruiting them.

Maybe the portal will be good for JUCO football??? A kid who would have been DI in 2018, but now is only seeing DII offers, might instead go the JUCO route. Just speculating.

agreed and guilty as charged on RB group.

As for HS vs portal signings, the hard thing is figuring out the math on schollies, doubly difficult for FCS with just 63 allowed. So if we lose 5 to portal and gain 5 from portal, then it won't impact the # HS signings. It's when the "net" portal signings doesn't net to zero that HS recruitment is impacted +/- ... can't fall short of schollies obviously, so more likely to not use them all with all the movement now. But assuming on average we have zero "net" portal transfers, then the portal won't impact the # of HS signings .. on average.

I think another part of it is schools are still dealing with players using an extra year due to COVID. Presumably that is taking away available scholarships from someone and I am assuming unproven high schoolers are most impacted.

Last Chance U - albeit the basketball edition - made that painfully obvious in its most recent season. Former UIC Flame DC Calip played well but ended up with no DI offers and returned to ELAC this year. The extra Covid year jammed everything up.
