Really folks, God bless the kid, but come on, he only played in 2 games in 3 years at Memphis, completed no passes. Stuff happens, I grant you that, there may be something to explain it all. But, a "big time get"???

Kolbe isn't THAT bad. He may get challenged, hopefully he will get pushed, but I'm not at all convinced a third/fourth string QB at Memphis who never saw the field is gonna come in here and do much, for sure not much this fall. I'm glad to get proved wrong.

It's difficult to know how much of Kolbe's year last year is on him, how much is on the line, and how much is on the co-offensive coordinators. That said, I'd like to think that a great or even good quarterback can overcome some of those things. His less-than-stellar year was somewhere between disappointing and underwhelming. I know he'll be working his tail off this summer and just before the season starts. I expect him to be the clear #1 heading into St. Francis but I'm admittedly very interested in seeing what Broadnax can do with many reps.

I don't think it's all that much of a mystery. Look at Kolbe's stats for his soph and junior seasons. Same Kolbe, same OC's, different OL although I would throw in the loss of WR Warrum as a difference.

Valid concerns about Davis but in his defense he was redshirted in '15, injured in '16 and behind an all-conference QB in '17. He hasn't played very much football for long time. The last time he did play in HS he was very good. He was selected as the best QB and Offensive POY in Mississippi's largest class - 6A. Also Justin Fuente saw something in him and Fuente knows QB's. I agree that Kolbe is still the projected starter but this is Jake's last season. I'm thrilled to have Davis this year and next.

Said it once, I'll say it again: Broadnax needs to go to WR just like Meredith before him. Perhaps that's part of what drove the staff to take another QB into the fold.

As for Davis, this coaching staff knows what they are doing. I trust them to make the right call when the time comes, whether that's Kolbe, Hatfield, or Davis.

It looks to me like the QB job at Memphis is wide open. Sounds like this kid had a heart-to-heart conversation about his place in the pool of candidates. You never know what's gonna happen , but there's no way Davis was brought in without Beathard's buy-in that it was worth the gamble. We really have nothing to lose here.

Edit: fixed it.

I'd love to see Broadnax as a receiver. Let's give the new guy some slack. Let's see what he's got.

Don't get me wrong, I expressed skepticism that this was a "big time get", but I totally agree that he didn't just show up at the door, and I'm glad to have him. Spack and Beathard surely talked to him and welcomed him, and his background 3+ years ago was pretty damn good, so who knows if he can finally reach his potential. Here's hoping.

Didn't Beathard have some sort of QB "camp/school" when he was down south on his "sabbatical"? Maybe he knows this kid from his HS days?

We sure seem to have a lot of QB's. And that we are far from figuring this position out.

Why does everyone seem to forget Smith? He’s still on the roster as a QB. I personally think he’s a contender.

Kolbe had some TRASH games last year. We all know this, but that guy is your starting QB this season. No question.

I respect that this new guy is a 3+ star HS recruit and yes, he got some good offers. But we have had much bigger players come in with much bigger HS pedigrees. I wouldn't write this guy into a starting role or even a backup role any time in the next 3 years. ISU suddenly has 6 D1 college QBs on its roster. Honestly, I'd like to see us go back to a read option style QB/offense. That is where the entire sport is going. Unless you have Elway behind center, you need a guy who can MOVE and force a defense to not over pursue. Tre Roberson showed us what that could be at a very high level, but if I could find a similar player that could do 80% of what he could, I'd take it over any pocket QB on our roster immediately.

Malachi is the guy on the roster right now who could do that. I've mentioned it in the past but I'd be a fan seeing a reunion of #5 and #25 in the backfield for this very reason. Malachi's arm at this point isn't where it needs to be. You can't go Kolbe for "traditional packages" and Malachi for "spread/option" because you always know its going to be a run when Malachi is in and can stack the box. He has to be able to be a threat to throw a good ball.

Hatfield showed some foot speed in the Spring game. Smith is on the same spectrum as Kolbe. Can run, but it seems to be a 5-8 yard slant pass or a hand off.

Hopefully having Bethard back will re-energize our offense. I have a good feeling about the defense. Nothing to back that up, just a good feeling!

"Brady bring some competition and experience to our quarterback room which is always a good thing," Spack said. "We heard a lot of good things about him from the former staff at Memphis who had ties to ISU and they all speak highly of him. Brady has great arm talent and has a very fluid delivery. He is also a good athlete that won't get rattled in the pocket and from what we hear, his teammates love being around him. All those things and his maturity as a person are what intrigued us about him and we look forward to seeing what he can do when he steps on the field for us this fall."

By these quotes does anyone else get the feeling Spack doesn't know a ton about the kid? Just kind of word of mouth "from what we heard." Did Spack and Co. personally work him out before the offer or just offer blindly. Seems low risk high reward though.

Word of mouth is good enough if you trust the source. I think Spack got himself a nice insurance policy for this year and a likely starter for next season. Then we see which one of the 3 young guys pans out for 2020.

I love that we got a junior who will compete this year and then be ready for sure by next year ... if not this year.

Just don't rule out the st4ong possibility that we see Kolbe reach his potential this year .. planets are aligning on offense. Kolbe has a big head start on Davis .. most transfers take a while to acclimate .. especially summer transfers.

From the limited info available, I don’t see him head-and-shoulders over anyone we currently have (out of Kolbe, Brodnax, Hatfield, or Smith).
I have all the confidence possible that Coach Beathard will correctly evaluate the talent and make the right decision. In Beathard I trust.

I agree with you there. They wouldn't bring him in just to be one in six. They must have a good evaluation on him...but nothing's for sure. He'll have to prove it, but it's exciting that they're trying to upgrade the most important position. I have no idea who'll be our QB by mid season. Kolbe probably has a short leash this year.

“I was looking for arm talent. We need a big arm,” Spack said. “I felt I didn’t know coming out of spring if we had a guy who could challenge Jake in the program. Bryce Jefferson is a very good player, but I didn’t want to put that kind of pressure on a freshman.

“This guy (Davis) will come in as our No. 2 and go up or down based on what he does. Jake is our starting quarterback right now. Everybody knows that. Everybody was told that. The best player will play.”

So, Jefferson was expected to be No. 2 as a true freshman. That's good news for the future.

I think this also suggests a position change for at least one (probably two) of the three in Malachi, Hatfield, or Smith.

My bad Timmy, I misread your post. I thought you had said that Beathard said Winkler was better than Roberson rather than "some saying".

I've heard that many people are saying it

You should start a new thread if you're going to reopen the "Some vs. Many" debate. Everyone's going to want to weigh in on that one.

Well, we all know the need at WR, and QB to WR is a fairly common transition. The combination of route understanding, reading defenses and ball skills helps. Or will we see a move to Safety, likely the other most frequent transition? Current Redbird LB Demarco Washington is also a converted QB.

So we'll see what transpires. I'm looking for receiver help first. But this staff has converted a RB into a Defensive Tackle, so who knows where a player may contribute.
