Pedon on Dakich, “We connected. When he came to Ohio State his graduate year, I loved that kid from the moment he stepped on campus and he impacted our program. I couldn’t believe how much he impacted our program in a short time. It’s not just in his play but his ability to join the room with some experienced guys and earn his keep. He has a great quote that I’ve stolen from him, “You have to fit in before you stand out.” It’s so true. I think he’s got some real gifts and is going to be a great coach. Hopefully I can be a good mentor for him, and continue teaching him the ropes. He adds value to our Redbird program from the start and I know that, and it’s why I am excited to have him apart of our family.”

I'm not opposed to this hire or sold on it being a good hire for Pedon, but I will say it is definitely an odd hire for a first time HC to hire a first time assistant with minimal recruiting connections, especially one that doesn't have roots in Illinois. That said, I'm hopeful that this works out really well an pleasantly surprises me.

I would have to echo your sentiments. Additionally both hires have high school ties to Indiana and college ties to Ohio. Pedon obviously already has strong ties to the Ohio region.

I hope the next hire has more experience and additionally brings some geographic diversity. We now have a couple of coaches who have high school roots in Indiana and college playing connections in Ohio. Ohio, a state Pedon already has deep rooted connections. It doesn't mean we can't recruit the 200 mile radius he talked about, but it may be scewed to the east to begin.

I’m not sure if he’s an assistant or DOBO or special assistant to the HC or recruiting coordinator. If he is a full assistant he’s young, unmarried, and it’d be his first. He’d be cheap and allow more money to go to the last hire.

In the pantagraph Q&A article coach addressed that early in his head coaching career he was going to go with guys he knows and trusts in his first staff. Early on that's obvious. I'm assuming Andrew will have a similar role as his previous job, but perhaps he thinks he's ready for more

Welcome Andrew Dakich to Illinois State and the men's basketball program. Looking forward to seeing the program that coach Pedon, coach Offutt and you bring.
