It's hard enough to get students interested when we're rebuilding and haven't made the tourney since long before they were born, but if they have to cough up money on top of that...
+100 Phantom....this is a good example of the many many head wins that isu athletics faces from many many perspectives. agree it is truly "HARD" in the current environment to succeed where there is .....students not attending, overall attendance gradually falling, participation in a conf where the better conference partners historically leave and much lesser programs are added, the top athletic programs reside in different conferences, inability to schedule better quality/fan interested home games, failing to have success winning/qualifying for tourneys( esp ncaa) that is proven over time , falling donations, growing fan apathy...etc etc.

that said there seems to be stiff resistance from good loyal isu fans (many around here) towards the idea of any change to isu athletics strategy that eliminate/mitigate the headwinds and makes it less "hard". yea winning will temporarily help attendance but winning is likely not sustainable given our proven track record and winning could fall off fast again. we do not need knee jerk short term tactical changes rather we first need to make some meaningful long tern changes to improve our operating environment. yet there is no fan interest and that is puzzling to me.

no need to respond just sharing food for thought and this is not the right thread for this topic

I do think part of the struggle is the culture around working in college athletics now. In addition to the noted issues under Brennan, just take a look at the directory. Staff size is probably cut in half. Marketing is hard regardless at all companies. Marketing for a mid-major department that has no sustained success in FB/MBB when you’re making pennies on the dollar to work 70 hours a week is not feasible. We might always struggle to continue marketing momentum because of that.

Amen.

I just responded to a survey from Wisconsin about the atmosphere at Saturday's UW-Marquette game. Wondering about my "fan experience". BS. I hate all that "fluff". I don't mind the on-court games during timeouts so much, altho some of them are lame, or the dance team, but that idea that there can't be any "dead time" at a game - every moment that there isn't action on the court there's "music", video on the scoreboard, screaming from the DJ, games on the floor, blah blah blah. Crissakes, the people in the crowd are on their devices during TO's anyway, no one's paying attention. Do people really decide to go to the games because there's cool music during timeouts, or cool videos on the scoreboard? Get off my effin' lawn!! ;)
They have made it hard to even converse with anyone you are attending a game with EXCEPT when you should be paying attention to the actual play on the court.

I get it, everyone is chasing the almighty dollar and there is seemingly never enough of it. But part of enjoying the gameday experience is having at least an occasional opportunity to enjoy the presence of your entire group during the actual game while not having to yell over anything and everything constantly blaring all around you.

I also seem to recall, from my marketing class, consumers can also tune out ads if they hear them too much and they lose their effectiveness.

My lawn is clear too.

I didnt get a chance to catch the game yesterday, but know we won just by looking at how many pages of replies there are.

We tend to be a great deal more interested in responding to complain than to give praise. Well, allow me.

- You had 5 players in double figures yesterday, 7 players with 7 or more.
- banks had seven dimes yesterday and WINNING TEAMS WIN BECAUSE OF REBOUNDS AND ASSISTS!
- While the Birds gave up 27 to Anderson, they always seemed to answer back as a team
- This is a very small team, so the few bigs we have have to play very disciplined basketball. All of our forwards, combined, had 4 fouls. That is huge and is something that will win games.

This was an excellent TEAM win and the more team wins you have, the easier it is the duplicate because you dont rely on one player or another having a career night to carry everyone to a W.

Didnt expect 6-3 (2-0) at this point. Very happy to see it!

I listen to the Dr Rick Show on Sunday afternoons on WJBC. I think he's right about a lot of subjects. We need to reach the kids with what interests them. ISU should Vemno them a Snapchat to their You Tube accounts and send them a TicToc on The Intertubes of Brain Dumps for coming to the games as incentive

I noticed the cheerleaders throwing shirts after three pointers...does the crowd know this before hand? Is there an announcement? If not, having one could get fans more exited after 3s. Right now it doesn't seem like the crowd knows its happening until the cheerleaders run around the moat waving them in the air.
I don't think there is an announcement. The more it happens during a game the more people notice though. I've definitely noticed during the women's games that by the 2nd quarter the people around us are standing up for shirts after a 3.

Announcements do tend to work for the casual fan. I now it is a controversial subject on here, but when they announced the "reminder" that we stand until Murray St scores a majority of the people in the $5 seats stood up and stayed standing until Murray St scored. I do think we are getting a few more season ticket holders standing each game.

My only problem with standing until the opponent scores...it's a bradley thing.

There is an announcement (almost every time). You just can't understand anything the announcer says, especially when he is reading a script. We were so blessed to have Steve Adams! I miss him greatly!

It use to be an ISU thing in the 80s. I actually think it changes to stand until we score at one point and then disappeared altogether.
I don't think any college team can "own" standing until the opponent scores. Go watch a game any given night and you'll see fans around the country standing until the home team scores, away teams scores, or both. It's in the fabric of college basketball tradition that our fans base refuses to adopt. Hell, we can get our fans to stand for the player intros. 95% of butts are in seats by the time the ball tips up.

Yeah, Badgers have done it now and then.
