I think this new look defense is giving teams fits to figure out. It’s confusing to opponents to figure out if it’s a straight up zone or not. Seem like the staff in jumping to it during critical stretches of close games too. The players all are seemingly learning it on the fly and that’s a testament to coaching.
I have admittedly done a 180 on my opinions of this staff. Sure, I'll make the excuse, I am turning into an old fart and internally pass myself off as some sage (pun intended) that can see through "coach speak" - but these guys really are "coaching up" these dudes. The evolution and transition is palpable.

I still SMH a little bit though when, although coulda/woulda/shoulda is a waste of time (as I said on Twitter last night), it's easy to fall into that trap when you realize how easily we could have 22-23 wins right now.
It’s easier to not fall into that trap when you realize that same woulda/coulda/shoulda has this team with like 5 wins on the year.

I know what you’re saying, but this team looked sure fire 10th seed not long ago. Enjoy the reality of the strong finish they’ve had.

That's the concern. While trying not to look past Sunday, the chances of us keeping all 3 of Myles, Johnny and Chase are...slim. But we'll have all summer to walk on those eggshells. Let's take care of Valpo. For once.
For non-graduates the portal is open only for 45 days at end of season. Myles will have more times as a spring graduate I think.

I hope all the players do what is best for their individual circumstances.

Coach mentioned that the guys continue to learn and will from this game too. You spend a whole season as a team learning to win and hopefully have it together for the run in March. Let's hope we retain enough of this team so we don't have to reset this whole process next year.
One of the things that I think goes unmentioned about Pedon is his consistent message. He wants to coach his teams to be playing their best basketball in February and March. He understands there is going to be ups and downs during the course of a 30+ game season and seemingly preaches to his players not to ride the rollercoaster and to stay even. To their credit, they have. Pedon seems to understand the likelihood of an at-large is slim year in and out, so he focuses on winning the conf tourney. I can appreciate the realness he attacks every day with.

Really hope program retention is solid. I'm not saying everyone is or should come back, just the key cogs that make this thing run. That's going to be the key to sustained success.

Agreed here, he has been steadfast in what he's preached and also his coaching has improved with the team. Between him and Jud, they've found some stuff on both sides of the ball that these guys fit into and, voila, their confidence has risen significantly. It's all correlating. Earlier this year, things felt so desolate a lot of us thought the staff was in over their heads. They've turned their own corner too and part of that is what you said here.

Also, I'm not trying to pee in our Cheerios with all the portal talk, but it's a shitty reality. It's hard not to look at the pieces that have spurned this resurgence and wonder if they are headed toward the door. Sure as hell hope not, but that's the college hoops world we live in.

In regards to the no call on Kinziger in the first half, from the view on tv it appeared Kinziger leaned pretty hard to the right to initiate the contact. The ref pulled him and the Missouri state player to the side after and spoke with both of them.

If that's the case, so be it. But if they agreed there was no foul on the play...Shouldn't Johnny been t'd up for flopping? Interesting how that was a point of emphasis last year (Sandage) and not called at all this year.

Any chance you'll enter the portal?!
I wish that wasn't the reality of the situation these days. Johnny does remind me a lot of Doug Collins. I was very fortunate to see him play all three years. It was a shame that Collins couldn't play as a freshman do to the NCAA rules at that time.

Wouldn’t these guys have to sit a year if they don’t graduate by this summer and transfer?

Well, I pointed out I have not been that down on him for most of the year. But end of game, geez man, slow down some, get control, value the ball, etc. etc. That's more my beef, I shoulda been more precise, I worry when the game's on the line. He's an iron man, for sure, and has been at okay most of the time (just okay). But seems to me he could/should be steadier "down the stretch". Correct, w/o Burford in there, really no one else to suck up the minutes.
He is also not the best FT shooter. I would rather have Johnny, Mal, Luke, or Darius at rhe line those final minutes. I am not sure why we don't use him inbounding the ball more.

He also doesn't seem like he has much confidence in his shot these days.

I had 4 takeaways from the last play.
  • I love that there were multiple options possible on the play. Can't remember the last time we actually had an inbounds play with actual options.
  • Watching the replay, I loved Lewis' reaction. You could see him just looking around wanting to take in the moment. I'm assuming it was hitting him that this was his last game at Redbird Arena but can't be sure. I will always remember how Lewis stuck with the program during the coaching change. Reminds me of Strawbridge from Evansville who did the same thing.
  • I loved how after the shot went in Mal immediately ran back to get on defense. He only took about 3 steps that way, but he was the only one I saw do that. A little thing but was great to see that awareness to play through the horn.
  • Foster showed so much emotion! While a very articulate person, sometimes he seems so into the game that he doesn't show that type of joy. Was so great to see.
I know there is a lot of talk about "oh this person is going to go into the portal" and "we want this person back and not this one". I just hope we are drinking in that this last month has been (to me) the most enjoyable ISU basketball I have seen in a number of years. The transfer rules are what they are. Just enjoy the moment.
Foster had a huge smile on his face as they honored him at half-court for 1k points in his career.

I thought Pedon had a nice touch grabbing the microphone and recognizing the fans, students, and support staff.

Makes sense. In that case, I tip my cap to the official for not being fooled on a bang-bang play...did it have to come at our expense though?

Wardle and BU might be our North Star here, strange as it seems. Besides Mast, who else have they lost to the portal?

If a coach - even or especially a…hard-nosed one - gets full buy-in from his players and they stay, the results follow and sustain. Here’s hoping Pedon’s culture is as sticky as the “Rock Fight” mentality a few miles up I-74.

No reason Banks can't shoot fts better. Foster has improved during the regular season. Granted Foster gets more chances at the line. Banks appears to not have developed the same routine at the line. Develop a routine with rhythm 😅

The universe owed Johnny and the Birds a break after the head-scratching no-call on his corner 3 in the first half
Well . . . to burst some bubbles . . . his foot was on the line, so it should’ve been a 2-shot foul.

Honestly, I think JK could’ve jumped into the defender, just enough to draw contact, rather than lean and then jump.

Good point on the FTs, that part of his game is a definite let down. Agree with your points too Mad. I think Pedon likes Humziger, or is that Kindonger? off the ball more with another PG. At this point he's what we've got there other than Kazooski pulling an occasional stint. Hoping recruiting fixes that or Johnny becomes more comfortable dribbling in traffic
