Has anyone tried to ask Spack or Lyons about the St X game?

I recall someone asking Lyons about it but he gave some answer like "Scheduling is hard and there were no games left."

And they let it go knowing that wasn't true?

I'm pretty sure it was Lyons on WJBC in one of his monthly interviews with Scott Laughlin. Scott doesn't follow the stuff super close so there is rarely followup about that stuff. Hopefully Randy over at the Pantagraph can get some answers soon. (I say this knowing he reads the board. :D )

"Scheduling is hard" should NOT mean "We have to play a team that Mt. Carmel or Providence would probably beat."

I live in Decatur and I shop at Kroger. They also had Lindy's out as well. They aren't giving us much love.

Thanks. I saw Street and Smith's at Meijer's today and many years of habit took over. ;)

If the Redbirds don't get into the playoffs because they need that game....Larry needs to be let go.

Only place I saw it was in a Pantagraph article headlined by us having 12 games in 2019. Lyons said:
The St. Xavier matchup is far from ideal because the NAIA opponent will not count in the eyes of the FCS playoff selection committee.
“There were no other FCS alternatives,” said Lyons.

Later digging by some on this board found multiple FCS teams with available home dates that fit our openings. Apparently two seasons of five home games in a row is more financial stress than the dept can take. I just think it was a bad decision.

I was reading Street and Smith in depth and St. Xavier is picked 5th nationally in NAIA. That's impressive and I expect a battle from them.

I emailed him directly about the absurdity of this game and received zero reply.

If that's true then we will likely not win a game in the MVFC

Illinois State - In the rugged Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Redbirds likely need success against Eastern Illinois if not Colorado State as well because the season opener is against NAIA member St. Xavier (Ill.).

Well, they are playing a D1 team, probably for the first time ever. Further, this will be a local enough game to get their family and friends to drive to ISU to see them play in a real college stadium. These are undersized All-conference HS players that probably are going to go out there with a chip on their shoulder to show the coaches that didn't recruit them what they missed.

On the other side, we run the risk of our team looking at this as a glorified practice, which is dangerous.

I still think we win roughly 48-13, but wouldn't be surprised if it were more like 31-21 either.

So...
Eastern Washington, Idaho, Sacramento State, Samford and Western Carolina are facing the same situation as we are - they're all playoff contenders who are one countable game short.

Makes you wonder why the 6 schools didn't just schedule home/home with each other if they are all a game short and not playing a d1 team.

so let's assume we come out flat/complacent against STX ... and they put up a few scores on a couple of big plays .. give them that as a possibility.

That said .. how on earth are they going to stop our run game just on the basis of who we have back at OL and RB. Our RBs are very hard to tackle by legit top level FCS defenses. And with expected improvements (and hopefully healthy) in our OL and play calling, they will likely have more room to run this year, particularly against a NAIA team that weighs 10-20 lbs less across most position groupd. I just don't see how we score less than 40 points .. more likely 50+ points minimum.

Defensively, we better not take them lightly .. since we lost so many starters. But offensively, it will be a very long grueling day for STX defense.

Except those programs don’t have to go thru the MVFC.

Yes to this ... their path to 8 wins (with a non D-I game) is generally much easier than ours. Usually getting many of the 4 or 5 patsy's at the bottom of their conference.

Whereas MVFC has at most 2 easier conference games of late (InSU and MoST) .. the rest of the top 8 teams are almost always competitive .. even the ones that finish 8th.

But I am surprised this many Big Sky teams settled for non-D-I games. In general Big Sky tries to schedule tough OOC games .. almost always an FBS, then increasingly playing more MVFC games of late, sometimes even 3 tough OOC games. Unlike some other conferences who try to avoid playing 2 tough OOC games .. mainly Southland, Southern, and all the patsy conferences. Colonial falls somewhere in middle IMO.

My guess is that they all were looking for the same thing...a home game to balance the schedule. And when they couldn't find a Division 1 team to travel, they looked at D2 and NAIA. If everyone insists on a home game, then you can't match up these programs.

We think we have it bad paying St. X to drive to Normal. Sac State is paying University of St. Francis (Joliet) to come to California for a game.
