Shocker! Spack's special team execution is a hot mess.

I was worried about the mindset going into this game. Way to respond and get the W!

Good win on the road. Defense was definitely the key to the game!!! I will take it and be very happy with it

Glad my prediction of a loss was wrong, nice first offensive drive!!! But too many penalties. 0-5 Western next....

showed some spark on offense and defense, but a goofy game .. felt like we would pull away, but one thing or another would go wrong on offense to end our drive or on defense to extend their drive. I think we had 3 easy picks dropped that would have ended drives. They got half their rush yards on that one long TD run .. and their only TD, though they got to red zone a few times. 2nd half looked sluggish other than our pass rush. But SIU is decent team .. they gave SDSU a tough game at their place before SDSU pulled away in Q4 to win 28-10. So I'll take a 21-7 win on road.

And must point out that Davis was 13-19 for 168 yards and a 161% QBR .. he looked sharp most of the game. I like the way he is throwing the ball with confidence. Let's get Edgar back soon .. shore up the receiver group. Nice day for Haley (5 catches, 72 yards) and Rutkiewicz (3 catches for 80 yards) .... big step forward for pass game !!

Oh and some guy named Robinson got 150 yardson 30 carries ... he could be a good one too !! :shhh:

Yes, very nice to get a Win, which was much needed to get back on track to make the playoffs. Thank goodness we have a good defense. However, that will only do so much, as it is only one-third of the equation.

I have NO idea why, why, why our offense does not spread it out, when running instead of trying to prove we can attempt to run against 9 in the box?? Just totally mystified.

A Good Redbird team would have won this game 35-0. Special teams continue to be a weakness - and always will, until it gets at little some emphasis.

Good start to the season - still plenty of areas to improve upon.

The D did a really good job of getting into the SIU offensive backfield and disrupting things. Lewan, Clark and Simon were among the standouts. I thought the secondary covered fairly well but the tackling especially by the corners needs to improve. Offensively Himmelman seemed to do whatever he wanted.

Important win for our playoff hopes. Terrible loss for SIU and any playoff hopes they might have had.

Where does their program go from here? Another losing season could be the end of Coach Nick Hill. Too bad. He seems like a nice guy. If they do get rid of him can they attract a quality coach? The 5525 attendance listed looked very generous and certainly wasn't based on butts in the seats. I get the feeling our conference is really starting to break off into Haves and Have Nots and we're sitting somewhere in the middle. The Big 10 shares TV revenue and that helps teams like Northwestern remain competitive. I'm not sure what if anything will keep the bottom of the MVFC competitive with the top and if you have a lot games decided by halftime that's bad for your conference.

This is the first year in a while where MVFC has what looks like this weak at the bottom. Though looks like USD is finding their stride. And SIU is having an ok year ... they gave SDSU a tough game for 3 qtr at their place last week .. down just 5 after 3 qtrs before losing 28-10. So right now, it MoST and WIU pulling up the rear.

Speaking of WIU .. we play them next week. They have a weak OL giving up 4 sacks per game.. 121st in FCS they week 5. Our front 7 should give th hem fits being #1 in sacks in FCS.

Offensively: Get JR the ball, teams will stack the box but we can run the ball. The o-line with Himmelman and Solomon on right looks pretty solid. BD played with confidence and got started early. Love that he spread the ball around a little. Jacob Carl with his 1st career reception then you go to receivers and Haley needs to continue to play like that with Kacper continuing to develop. With Rogers, kacper, Nagle, Edgar and others we have 5 receivers who are sophomores or younger. That should be really solid coming up and in the next few years. We need to keep any playd where JR is throwing in the playbook tho.

Defensively: The front 7 brought again. Clark and Romeo now have 5 and 7 sacks on the year, that's impressive. The secondary covered well and got hands on a lot of balls but didn't tackle good and the stupid penalties needs to stop. We had a drive where we just kept them going, it eventually got stopped bc siu was equally dumb but good teams take advantage of that.

Overall: Good win that we needed. I thought siu was trying to pull all the stops with the fake field goal, onside kick and so on but we regrouped and hung in there with the win. Need to stop some of the penalties that kept siu around but a win is what we needed after last weekend.

I have no problem with getting Robinson the ball but I thought it was the pass last night the opened things up for the run. The play calling incorporated more passing like in the first drive and I felt it kept the SIU defenders on their heels a bit on the first drive. Kind of lucky on that big pass play on the first Redbird drive because it looked underthrown by Davis and the receiver adjusted where the defender did not. Davis just does not seem to have the arm strength for the really deep pass. Under throws quite a bit. Brady, I thought played well and his TD run was well executed and a great call. The entire SIU defense went for the fake...and why not?
SIU tossed in a few trick plays. Some worked and some did not. The fake field goal was just poorly executed and the on-side kick was a great call by their coaching staff. It was also executed by the kicker perfectly. SIU's kicking game was impressive. Most kickoffs were out of the endzone and no run back. The punter was very effective for SIU. ISU's special teams were really not that special. We don't seem to be able to get a kick off into the end zone, the punting game was marginal at best and the special teams were not ready for the fake field goal or on-kick. If this team makes the playoffs I am beginning to think their real Achilles heel is the special teams. Field goal kicking has been good but they gave up a big kick-off return last night just like they did with NDSU. IMO, special teams need a great deal of work...a great deal of work!

That was a perfectly executed onside kick ... unexpected and blooped it less than 15 yards to far sideline. Virtually unstoppable if you dont expect it ... give their kicker some credit .. he kicked it perfectly. Nothing we could have done about it unless it were obvious inside kick situation .. it was not.

O I agree we kept siu off balance but JR also had a couple of decent runs. We went 75 yards in 5 plays, it was balanced but Davis still only threw it 19 times. I thought the running game set it up for the play action pass really nice. They complimented each other, which is what our offense needs with the defense.
