Thinking Hatfield is next in line to make position change ... we are too deep at QB and thin at WR and Safety

SR Kolbe
JR Davis .. likely 2019 starter
SO Broadnax .. 2nd string 2017, just moved to Safety
SO Smith .. 2nd string 2016 .. obviously needed more time or he would have remained 2nd string 2017
RS FR Hatfield .. originally was slated for move to DB when he first got here; but then they realized how thin we were at QB a year ago when we had no true 2nd stringer, so they left him in QB mix.
FR Bryce Jefferson .. they are high in this guy as true dual threat - we'll see how his passing skills measure up

Amazing .... the last 2 years, we've had zero 2nd stringers ready to pick up the playbook and run with it if Kolbe went down .. this is why they effectively took turns with Smith as 2nd string in 2016 and Broadnax in 2017. But now we appear to be loaded with guys with much better potential to come into game and still be able to use most of the playbook ... though it certainly helps to have a great run game to lead with.

There is no way they don't move someone else to receiver or secondary .. Hatfield to secondary might be next now that Jefferson is in camp.

I would definitely keep Hatfield at QB.

Spack is on the record that he originally recruited Hatfield as a safety. If Davis is the guy in 2019 and Jefferson is looking like the guy in 2020, Trent should be open to Spack's suggestions. He has a pretty good track record getting guys to the pros.

Ironically:
Spack spoke to Hatfield in the offseason about a potential position change, but will honor his desire to stay at quarterback.
“I have no problem with that. I want him to be happy,” Spack said. “He’s a hard worker, and it will be nice to have a young guy there to keep developing.”

It sounds like Spack is still hoping Trent will change his mind. I'm thinking what I outlined above is pretty close to reality. From what I have seen from Smith, I'm not sure he'll start for us.

Reading that article makes me worry a bit about the kicking game. All of them competing are walk-ons... maybe that's just what they always do. Make a walk on earn it, then give them a scholarship.

It will be interesting to see how many snaps Broadnax gets this year at Safety. It's got to be a little easier learning that position versus QB. Pretty convinced Hatfield and him will be playing safety together in the following years. Brock gave him an opportunity to see what he can do at QB and now he still wants him to play safety, kinda feel the writing is on the wall there. Coach knows what he's doing, but it's Hatfield's life.
