The other thing to consider was the MVC was at its best when Moser was here and we were at our worst when he took over. He got Osiris to come here when we absolutely sucked. The MVC sent 4 teams to the dance in 2006 and 2 of them made the sweet 16.

Sometimes it pays to be patient. Dan has to get better in big games too, but we need to stick with our guys and they will get better and better.

I am so happy for Porter and the Valley.

Beat me to it. Moser had two decent years here and two ugly ones. All four years we had competitive teams, just too much in the L column. Part of that was some roster turnover, and most of it was the rest of the conference being outstanding in those years. We were just one step behind everyone else, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort by Moser. He was every bit as passionate & energetic as he is now and an extremely likable guy. He certainly had things setup for a big year in '07-'08 but was let go, and Jank enjoyed the stocked cupboard Moser left him.

In the 11 years since Moser left, we've really been consistently good if you think about it: We've had just one sub .500 season overall in that time, and several postseason appearances, just not the one we really want. A big part of that is one thing that Jank & DM have in common: Either a bad loss or two in the regular season, and/or inability to win on Sunday in STL. We've sure as hell proven we can get there regularly, just can't bring it home.

One day that will change...

Tons of good reads right now about Porter, and this one caught my eye.

I had overlooked the fact that Porter had 3 AD's during his time with us. That hardly EVER spells success...for all parties involved. Every AD wants his own man. If Porter had been given one more year, who knows what would have happened. Personally, I'm glad he got fired. For he wouldn't be experiencing the magic that he is now. So many life lessons in his story. Pay attention, peeps...

That’s a great read! And a story that does t get told often enough due to the NCaA’s Unwillingness to let quality mid-major teams into the tourney.

I was at ISU when Porter was the coach. My friends and I started a group called The Porter Supporters. We had shirts made and wore jock straps over our jeans. Good times. Our intermural basketball team was also called the Porter Supporters and made the final four.

Considering he was making $420,000 this past year...I’m guessing it’s gone be double that.

way off the mark

One article I read said it's assumed Jacobson numbers. Somewhere in the 900k-1mil range.

Is it just me, or is anyone else perplexed as to why he apparently didn't receive any offers from some of the bigger programs out there? That was one hell of a run and I would have to think he could have parlayed that into a much larger contract. Thoughts...

Not many jobs opened up this offseason.

And, the ones that did were filled before the tournament was over. He did receive a feeler from Xavier from what I've read. I think he's waiting for DePaul or Northwestern (NW unlikely) to open up. I don't think he has much interest leaving the Chicago area. Of course, another few Sweet 16's and he may not need to leave for a bigger program because Loyola may end up in the Big East.

They have an endowment of $750-million. I'm sure they can move some money around and easily pay him $1-million. Hell, they could easily pay him $2-million without raising ticket prices or tuition. If Loyola wants to keep him from P6 programs they will no problem.

Loyola is not touching their endowment to pay a coach. Supposedly it was a non-issue to raise funds (or at least to get commitment for donations) from the alums to take care of Porter’s and the coaching staff salary increases. Loyola leadership was beating the drums for the donors to step up and the donors did step up....at least that is the story from a prominent Loyola alum that has had Loyola season basketball tickets for over 30 years.

Of course they are. They will try to raise the money first. That's just smart business. But, if they want to keep him they can match anything anyone offers. They're not hurting for money. Don't let anyone fool you. If you have an endowment of three quarters of a billion dollars you can pay any coach in America.
