Wow ... the women's game is progressing like the men's in an unfortunate way for MVC teams
Now they have lost 7 players including all 4 of their post players. The whole team could have returned. Now will anyone return?
Sad what is happening to college sports. Will any MVC teams be able to keep their players any more?

It looks like Cunningham is still there

Cunningham was 20-12 last year with a WNIT bid (rd 1 exit). She was 23-10 this year, made the Valley tourney title game with a WBIT bid (rd 1 exit). That’s pretty good considering who MSU lost when Agugua-Hamilton departed.

She wins just a smidge under 60% of her games as a HC. Over 11 seasons, that’s a pretty good clip. While I could see a downturn next year for MSU, it will be interesting to see how she portals. There are a lot of players out there, so we’ll see how the different MVC programs work through altering their rosters. In the MVC WBB landscape it is definitely the “haves” (ISU and MSU both in that category) versus the “have-nots.” There are several programs that just do not invest much in WBB, and that shows most years in the standings and more frequent coaching turnover after 3-4 seasons.

Gillespie has a lot of work to do in the transfer portal otherwise we will be playing on Thursday again. We were not able to replace Robinson last year and it showed.

Per her Instagram Freshman
, Brooke Coffey is in the Portal.
It will be interesting to see where Coffey ends up. I can’t see her going to a bigger program and playing, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the talent to.

She played a lot for a FR, and she had every opportunity to earn more minutes as well. She would have had even more minutes to earn next year. It would have been nice to see year 2, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Not able to replace the MVC POY and WNBA draft pick. Those kids don’t come around very often. And they probably aren’t going to the MVC now that the one time transfer rule is gone. Kids can pick a new school every season. Truman St (DII) kid last year wasn’t nearly as good as Paige, and wound up going to Iowa St over ISU. The portal has created an alternate reality where kids think a good statistical season means a trip to the Power 5 and NIL riches. It’s Bizarro World.

And I agree, Paige was great. But we also missed Mary Crompton. Waite didn’t shoot it as well as expected and struggled to guard, so her replacing Mary wasn’t apples to apples.

Waite just didn't have the size to guard when not scoring. At least Crompton had the size to stay on the floor when not scoring. She also had the ability to sneak to the basket sometimes on the over plays.

Lenz in portal now
It seems a bit odd that we lost both Lenz and Coffey. Lenz seemed to play even more than Coffey, and even with Wong back, there are a lot of guard minutes to go around. You can see Wong and Lenz on together.

Dowell will be a key player next year; hopefully, she stays. If McGowan were to depart, we could be in a world of hurt in the post.

Bullman announced on Instagram that she is moving on from basketball. Lots of holes to fill for next year.

Having Wong, Dowell, and Bullman all back would give us a chance no matter who we lost. We’re going to need to bring in another post. We have good FR talent coming in at PG and SG, but a combo guard who can run in both spots would be helpful.

I’d be a-ok going after some Valley talent in the portal, starting with Naveah Thomas from UE.

What is interesting - we have 4 players departing as seniors. We then lose 2 FR and 2 SO. Boles was expected, but to lose all 3 of Lenz, Coffey, and Aalsma is surprising.

Coffey to Lindenwood. Making the jump much closer to home (than 2.5 hours) was expected. LU has been bad to (Barb Smith-level) dismal since the Covid year, so they have to be excited about a talent normally above the level they would get.
