His overall game is excellent. I don't understand leaving him on the floor the last minute of the game. You know they are going to foul him so put him on the bench. Missing 8 free throws is horrendous!
And yet, they didn't foul him last night. Even when Lansing was yelling at his player to foul Fayne before the ref handed the ball to our inbounds guy.

Everyone in the arena knew they were going to try and foul Phil on that inbound. Muller's designed play was to start all of the Redbirds on the ball side of half court. Immediately when the inbounder got the ball Phil sprinted down the sideline. Had they fouled right there it would have been intentional, 2 free throws and the ball for the Birds.

Until Phil shows he can shoot it, expect a little hack-a-Fayne.

I agree that I'm not sure I want Fayne out there during the foul-a-thon at the end of the game, but in looking at the bench, I'm not sure we had anybody I felt all that comfortable putting in either. I thought putting him under the Syc's bucket for the inbounds play was tempting fate. I'd put him under our basket just outside the lane with instructions to not move.

Wouldnt fouling fayne before the ball was inbounded be called as intentional? I may be wrong, but thought that was the case if the defender wasn’t making any effort on the ball and just hacking someone.

Just put your arms around him as he tries to move. That's just a hold. That wouldn't be intentional.

Phil shot 55% last year, 44% this year. So, for his career, Phil is just shy of 50%.
Dinma shot 51 % on his career. Improved from 42% to 57%.

Phil has spent his entire ISU career in first place in the MVC!

Here’s hopeing that continues!

Evans better be on the short end of out 1-3 weeks, if Phil is going to stay in 1st place. Potentially tough stretch (at Drake, Missouri State, Loyola, at SIU) on the horizon. Essentially, 4 of the top 5 in the Valley, with the 5th being the Birds. Great opportunity to take early control.

Phil should just stand out of bounds until there's an reason to step in. Seriously, any foul in that situation targeting a guy w/o the ball should be an intentional foul .... 2 shots and the ball.

We could have him be the inbound man. Not sure about his passing, tho. And I don't disagree with what a foul on a guy w/o the ball should be . . . but I've never seen it called. As long as he moves, a guy can wrap him up and make it look "legit". So long as it isn't flagrant, I don't see an official calling an intentional at that point of the game.

The inbound pass versus pressure is an underrated skill. Just ask UNI who coughed up a huge Big Dance lead and game to Texas A&M when their inbound passer got hurt. Although, one could argue that Phil going to the line is about the same as a turnover.

Girlfriend is an athletic trainer and said more than likely he will be out closer to the three week mark. Frustrating to say the least.

Phil has been incredibly impactful for this program. It is GREAT to have him down low, but he could use a new rule where you must hit 25 straight FT before you leave practice. They are going to start the "hack a shaq" concept soon.

I'm not sure Valley teams have the depth to just start fouling guys out to put Fayne on the line. I suppose in desperate times at the end of games when caution is thrown to the wind.

I wouldn't even bet on Gassman or Key hitting 25 straight from the line, in practice with no pressure...let alone Fayne. Every player would have to take residence at RA.

The old cliche. Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Fix the stroke. Until that happens all the reps in the world will only make it worse.

He's been in double figures every game. Season low 13 points. Season high 24. Talk about consistency. Wow. His game log is just amazing.

4 double doubles and excellent defense every night. What a player he is.

I don't think we give him enough credit. I don't know if Yak was his lead recruiter but man has he been awesome.

Phil-----pls figure out the FT's. :D

But keep up everything else you are doing.

jinxed

Muller on Fayne's performance last night.

"“He was horrible. Phil is usually great, and I still believe in him and love him as much as I ever have,” said Muller. “But he got out-competed from the beginning of the game until I took him out"

No jinx. Look below. He simply got out-hustled.

Hustle aside, looks like he did fix his ft issues. Went 1-1. Glad that bs is over with. (tongue.in.cheek.)

I forgot to mention that Fayne has flypaper hands. You hardly ever see him juggle a pass. He snares the ball cleanly whether it's an entry pass, rebound or a lob/dunk.

A very, very underrated skill for any player but especially a big. You saw that today in the last 3 minutes. If any of those passes aren't caught properly we lose.

Great game Phil

Excellent point. And he's quick to the ball. If we had another solid penetrating guard, they could grab a free buffet with Phil.

10 for his last 11 at the line.
