I know this won’t mean much to those outside the Springfield area, but it is a great story.
Tonight will be the last meeting of what has been known as the “Leonard Bowl”. Since 2010 (when Rochester joined the Central State Eight Conference) Sacred Heart Griffin, coached by Ken Leonard (most wins in Illinois High School Football history) have faced Rochester, coached by his son Derek Leonard (winner of eight Illinois High School Football State Championship’s since 2010). This will be the 2nd straight year they have faced each other in the State Sem-Finals.
Will Ken Leonard move on to next weeks State Championship Game in quest of a State Championship in his final season, or will his son Derek end his dad’s career and move on to next weeks championship game in quest of his ninth State Championship since 2010.
Good luck to both, and regardless of the outcome, congratulations Ken Leonard on a great career.
