A little off-subject but it is the off-season. Coach Slay is on his 9th stop in 14 years? And it won't stop there. Anyone who thinks coaching is a great gig is right but it doesn't mean it's easy. I have a buddy (an EIU grad) who started as a high school assistant a few years after I did. I'm 65 and have been retired for a while now. I bounced around 3 times and never had to move. He decided to go the college route. God bless him. 4 years at 4 schools as a GA. He's now at his 15th school as an assistant. Big 10 and SEC stops along the way. I can't even imagine that life. As he likes to say "It ain't all biscuits and gravy coach".
Absolutely Timmy. It can be a brutal life. Lonely life. A person can get closed-minded and forget (subtly) about the most important things in life. A good number of alcoholics in the biz. There's a reason for it. This isn't criticism to the profession. Just reality.

It’s very common for assistants to bounce around. They are trying to move up and prove themselves so they can get their first job. A bunch of stops doesn’t concern me as long as they are locked in while here. Offutt never was.

They are also often just on 1 year deals themselves. There was an article, I don't remember what publication, but it delved into the life of a D1 assistant coach, following this one around and shared all the stress that they experience from year to year because they are often just on one year deals.

Manchester & Cubird - how about a little more info on the Sy Chapman type who’s visiting, please?

It’s not a scoop, because people never use names. It has become cryptic little puzzles and weird obsessions with wanting to say something without saying anything in case it’s wrong. Odd.

This isn’t something to risk losing a ‘source’ or to tread lightly on that’s going to damage a reputation. It’s a kid visiting campus.

And the source doesn’t want the name out. Multiple people know the name. Sorry you aren’t inside the bubble.

No need to apologize for not being ‘inside the bubble’.

I honestly don’t care about who is on campus until they’re on the team. I’ve seen enough visits not end up signing with ISU every offseason, well before your graduation in 2011.

It’s ridiculous though when people take interest and want more information and all you can give is ‘he plays basketball and is taller to the average person’. Maybe keep all that talk inside the bubble until they sign.

Glad we are actively looking to fill our final scholarship though.

He followed and was followed by a chunk of the team on socials so I assume at least decently.
