Chase better be watching DJ Burns at NC State play. He is listed at 6"9" 275. That can be Chase's game. However, first you can't stay on the floor unless you stop fouling.
agree....there is so much chase hype given how briefly he played. I saw the potential too but there seems to be something behind the scenes (more than fouls) that limited his p.t.? bizarre to me

Appears to me that it takes a lot for a young guy to earn Ryan's trust.

My following opinion is based on watching Chase LIVE and in person, and not via the TV...which hides many nuances and intangibles.

It also seems to me that young guys in this league have to earn their way with officials, too. I felt like Chase had a LOT of cheap fouls called on him this year. It took me a while to fully buy into Chase, but I am 100% there. He has excellent footwork, he sees the game and floor, he hustled ala Kendall (top 2 hustlers on the returning team are Chase and Johnny)...I never once saw him with a bad attitude (ie: he is ALWAYS coachable, remarkably so)...and he is one heck of a teammate. First one off the bench celebrating others, on the floor he's helping teammates. I watch for this all the time. Also, he picked up a number of floor burns this year in his limited time. He and Johnny hit the hardwood, face first, more than any other player...by far. The kid has HEART...legit skill and TEAM skill...and really good eyes. His physique has become IMPRESSIVE.

The game is still a wee bit fast for Chase, but folks he was catching up quickly. I believe he will average a double double in this league. I am all in on Chase, and I hope he's playing 25-30 min a game next year.

DeVries is officially gone so I would expect transfers from Drake.

I know he's staying, but Davis was 4 ppg, 27% from 3, 32% FG. I expect Jack to be better than that from the moment he steps on the floor. Can't we do better than 4, 27, 32 in the portal?? It looks like we can do better than that in the Valley portal alone. We are probably going to have 3 spots to fill. I'm going to be disappointed if these are not starter caliber transfers. While these teams will be dismantled in the next week or so, what is listed above would be in deep trouble if Drake and Indy State had their coaches coming back.
So do we focus on 2024-25 and doing whatever it takes to be playing in the NCAA tournament? If so, then push out all the players you feel necessary to bring in players to achieve that goal. Of course that is easy to accomplish. All you need to do it say it on this board and the coach can accomplish it.
As for me, I am more concerned about 2025-26, 2026-27 and going forward. And that is going to take building a culture, a coach/player relationship and trust. Bringing in players and then pushing them out definitely is not going to accomplish that. Bringing in players and building a relationship and trust will accomplish that. Bringing in players and allowing them to build relationships and friendships with their teammates and then pushing them out is not going to accomplish that.
If we were to keep this roster and add another good freshman recruit to replace Sissoko I would be fine with that. It shows the younger players that their coach is committed to every player on the team. If he is not, then I wouldn’t expect the players to be committed to him. And that will lead them to the transfer portal.

Yeah. Do whatever it takes. There won't be a 26-27 and beyond for Pedon if we are not in the NCAA in the next 2 years. You're good with a 4th or 5th place finish in 24-25? That's what we currently have and that's only because Drake and Indy will be rebuilding. If these guys can get more NIL or a better chance, they would be gone. The truth is, most of them can't. Letting schloraship players sit around when you know they will not significantly contribute is wild to me. Bring in guys to compete for starting spots. In the end, this will happen. Adding 1 Fresh to replace Sissoko will not be good enough. Pedon said it himself. We need shooting, shooting. The "shooting" is NOT on the roster. Mal is streaky at best. Davis is not a shooter. They are back. Luke? Nah. He will probably "move on" from playing basketball. Burford? Not a shooter. Most likely headed to the portal. JK? Yeah! He will be back, but can't do it all. We need more than 1 more Fresh. Thinking about 25-26, 26-27? There are too many factors in college basketball to be thinking that far out. Win now! Others are figuring it out, I expect our coach to do the same. There's nothing that builds relationships and friendships better than a weekend at the NCAA tournament!

Agree, ISU has to make a play to win it NOW. The “we get this piece, then that piece, etc. is so before the portal thinking. Game has changed and everyone is a free agent every year. You start with a fresh slate and build from there. That does not mean you get rid of everyone but this team has not been competitive the last two years. If Pedon can’t win it in four years you need to get a JC, or division one or two coach that consistently wins and knows how to rebuild every year. Portal and NIL has made this a whole new ballgame. ISU is not Gonzaga. We cannot build on what is here because what is here has not gotten us to the dance for DECADES. Not that we don’t have a couple pieces but go get what you need it is out there. Out of our three freshman this year only one really contributed and that was later in the season. So if one of the two freshman contribute late this coming season and maybe one of the sophomores then you have three of the eight players you need. Hopefully Foster stays, so that is four. You need at least two if not three portal players, I would go get four that can start for us tomorrow. Who are they, where are they? That is what you pay coaches for. There are lots of good players out there. Especially players whose coach left a school. Grad students looking for one last run. I would have liked to just had that pure shooter Oakland had last season. Looks like the valley is in reload mode. ISU better reload better than your conference mates or we have another long season ahead of us.

This all sounds good but I firmly believe the NIL portal world makes this approach obsolete. Just my opinion. Look at UNI, a program with a much richer history than ISU (not including now ancient ISU past success) and a well established/respected coach..they will be incredibly active in the portal this year. Seems there is a good culture there so why all the transfers?

Now hard to find any teams that only have a successful grass roots program ie no annual transfers/departures.

The roster stability challenge for a mid major? …how the hell does a coach keep a talented player(s),that he helped developed, from moving on after year 2 (quite franky any year) when the player can leave for thousands of $$$s (and maybe hundreds of thousands), better facilities, livelier playing atmosphere, typically a better academic ranking, more media exposure and a much higher chance of playing post season?
Pedon can develope his own culture of treating players respectfully but unfortunately it is nearly a year by year proposition now.
