I don't blame people for being pissed about Redbird basketball, this NCAA drought is entirely too long. I'm not in the "fire Muller" camp but I understand why some are. HCDM was 17-1 in conference just 2 years ago and was COY, he didn't just forget how to coach. Yes, he recruited the wrong kids for what he is trying to do but all we can do is hope he learns his lesson...... I believe he will. The bigger issues are the direction of the athletic dept and MVC.

Am I the only one starting to feel the 17-1 was an outlier?

Also, that Cartwright PG for UCI is everything I want in a point guard. Helluva a player and hustled his ass off...on both side of the ball.

I have seen comments about the direction of the department as a whole. Football is competitive, but a step back from where we want to be. Barb was a disaster, but the women’s b-ball team is rolling. Baseball is off to a solid start with a new coach. Volleyball had a historic season.

I fail to see how awful the department is.

Besides Gregg Marshall, what other MVC coach of recent vintage would not have a 17-1 conf record as an outlier?

It was a result of a great recruiting class - 4 quality starters plus we had other giod role players. We recruit better and Muller will be a much smarter coach.

It was more than likely the result of Dana Ford. Look at his recruiting at Missouri State. He has a 4 ⭐️ recruit coming in next season. His foot prints are all over the early success.

As well as some of our other programs are competing its the b-ball and fball programs that garner the most attention. Period. I was just in Vegas, along with thousands of other b-ball fans. I didn’t engage anyone to discuss baseball or volleyball. B-ball and fball are king. And right now, we seem to be failing in both sports.

The NCAA women’s basketball tournament payout is $0. The tournament doesn’t even make enough money to give leagues a payout per unit.

D1 men’s basketball and FBS football are king. Average attendance for FCS playoff football games (outside of NDSU) is around 4 to 5 thousand fans. I don’t even consider winning at FCS football that important anymore unless it helps move to FBS. The only thing good about FCS football is getting an FBS team to pay you to play them. I’m not even sure ISU cares about FCS because the athletic department scheduled a game that didn’t count so they could get a cheap home game last year.

It’s all about winning in men’s basketball for ISU.

HT59...I would not be surprised. I would be happy if Muller came up with his own....cheer for the season.

Smithson years were incredible when he was in Normal....but I feel that we dodged a bullet when he left.

He's tried before. It's usually an internal motto. A few years back it was "All in." It has been, "Chop wood." The all-in thing picked up for a little bit thanks to a group of fans based in TT. It would have been cool to establish a tradition like that. ISU lacks that call and response cheer/rallying cry.

How many prospect recruits don't turn out? Didn't MSU have a "stud" recruit that basically did nothing for them recently? Not Church. I can't remember his name.

Just because Dana brought in a "4 star" recruit doesn't mean he will actually play like that.

Tom Richardson was world renowned for his recruiting skills

I believe Chris Lowery recruited two top 100 players one year at SIU. Neither one played great, and I think both transferred after their freshman year.

Jankovich got 4-star Jeremy Robinson, and he barely saw the court, and ended up transferring to one of the worst teams in the country.

Not all big-time recruits work out, even at the mid-major level.

Examples:

Aaron Falzon, 4-star recruit out of HS. Grad transfer now after NOT playing well enough to play at Northwestern.

Steven Fitzgerald, 4-star recruit of HS. Transferring after only getting 60 minutes PT in his frosh year at Samford. I would think a 4-star at Samford would be playing right away.

Andre Rafus, Jr., 3.5-star recruit, transferring after playing only 44 minutes his frosh year at Eastern Michigan.

There are a lot of 4-stars who were rated way too high, and a lot of 2-stars who were rated way too low.

The way things are going we should go all "dodgeball." Something like "set the bar low, that way when we don't succeed then we are not as disappointed" or "we might not be that good, but that's ok, we tried hard."

Waiting to be called a whiner, moaner, groaner in 3...2...1...

I wasn't really sure where to put this.... food for thought.

Wofford’s Mike Young went 74-103 without a winning season in his first 6 years. Since then, he has been to the NCAA tournament 5 times in 10 years. Sustaining a winning foundation takes time, patience, and losing seasons. Most coaches/staffs do not have that luxury.

How long should it take? I know there isn’t a right or wrong answer. But, 1 great year doesn’t equal a lifetime appointment. Yeah, Muller had some decent years in between...but nothing to write home about.

Wofford is also slightly different. They only went Division 1 in 1997-98 and Mike Young is only their second coach at Division 1.
Kind of like “legend”, Rick Byrd at Belmont. Would anyone be happy with only 7 NCAA trips and 1 win in 33 years? 10 years as NAIA team, then 5 years as NCAA independent. But after 4 less than stellar years in the Atlantic Sun, made the NCAA tourney in 7 of the next 14 years.

I’m convinced. Muller should only go for 1-star recruits.
