Kind of shows the class and understanding that some of the poor in spirit on this board express.

I hope Dan takes a year off, bounces back as an assistant HC in the SEC, then re-emerges as the HC @ UIC after Yack moves to green pastures.

This had to happen, I wish nothing for success for Dan and his family and will never celebrate tarnishing the legacy of a great player. Dan did some great things as others have said and I will always cheer him on.

-2015 run as a 4 seed knocking off Wichita State and almost UNI was a great run
-2017 Coach of the year
-Most wins vs top 25 teams in school history (@Creighton, Dayton, Wichita Sate)
-Most wins in school history in a season
- 2017 Regular Season Champs

This is a day that had to happen with the way the season was going, Redbird Hoops needs a reset for a fanbase and a fresh start in a lot of ways. I will cheer Dan on because a lot of our good memories are with him as a Redbird. I remember being a 14yr old kid jumping up and down when he made the shot vs Tennessee in the 98 NCAA Tournament, he's one of my favorite Redbirds. I'm sure it's going to be hard for him to come back after this, but hopefully in the future he can and will come around for as a Redbird great. Until then I will cheer him on the last 3 weeks of the season.

Thanks coach, but now it's time to get Redbird Hoops back where it belongs at the top of the MVC standings.
Now run down his list of failures... Guarantee you can create a list a lot longer than 5 bullet points.

Yak would have to win to move on, he has not done anything close to that at UIC, but hey, one can dream!!! Why the hell is there such an obsession with this guy??

Needed to be done. Can't say I'm going to celebrate it, just cuz I think it's a bad way for a legendary alum to finish things with the university. It's why Collins never considered coming back, and didn't want Chris to come here.

Finishing out the year is weird, to say the least. If you're going to fire him, fire him and move on. Then again, I'm sure I don't want Jones leading the team the final few games. I feel bad for TWills and Johnson, having just been added to the staff this year.

Pretty sure this confirms any thought Reeves might have whether or not to stay (gonna go). Simpkins twins prolly won't sign now unless Johnson stays on.

At least Brennan gets an early start on identifying/targeting our next coach.
Spot on take.

Dan Muller was and is an excellent representative of the school and of the program. He led ISU to its best season in modern history and, I think we all agree, was screwed out of an NCAA bid, so this comes with lots of mixed emotions, but it did have to be done.

ISU is a basketball school and when your team wins 10-14 games a year for a few straight years, you are trending in the wrong direction. A few years ago, Muller had never had a losing season and I said then that he would be a Power 5 coach if he were to leave. At the time, I think he would be. I do think he will be scooped up by another good mid-major in the coming months and probably bring that team to ISU to play.

Still, all this needed to happen.

Who said anything about changing to coddle anyone? I've been coddling you over this subject for 10 years. The reason is emotions. Every opening here leads to landslide of names of former Birds we should consider, no matter how obscure or if they're even actually coaching. Rob Judson was ready to become the next head coach until someone with deep pockets thought with their Emotions and stepped up and offered $ if we hired Dan at 11:59. Emotions got in the way when contract negotiations got underway. Emotions got in the way with some defending him longer than they would with an outsider. Emotions got in the way of those ready to move on sooner in blaming the situation we found ourselves in on who the coach was.

I'm sure we have alum who would make worthy head coaches, but I would prefer they do it elsewhere. What benefit is there to hiring alum? Are the x% more likely to win, lose...because they care more? His hire gave most people a warm fuzzy feeling, but it gave me the willies. And I've been living with them for 10 years. I see the odds of that situation as been high for eventual failure, and low on potential return.

You're just hoping we hire an alum so you can rip on the Kool Kids on the Block for being (insertnamehere) lovers.

Dan, you're a great alum.of the program, I'm sorry it didn't work out. I hope the next phase of your life ends more satisfactory than this one did. And don't think we won't cheer for you the next time you're on campus and are announced to the crowd. We will.
It's all good. We can now hope that we can get back to the winning tradition.

There isn't any poor in spirit. We just kind of feel like it's any other job and should be treated as such. We wish Dan well- just feel like it's long over due.

This move needed to happen. Muller proved several times he wasn't ready/able to be at HC that could have sustained success.

At first, I was confused by the timing of the ordeal. There's what? 6 games left? Why not just wait? Then the detail emerged about his contract requiring a 30-day notice. The timing enables the AD to begin the search immediately.

I think another factor of the timing that is important is that it allows Dan to ease out of the role. We all know he has pissed off a lot of fans the last three years and even more so the past couple of months. Making this move with a handful of games left on the season allows him almost a farewell tour. He can transition out. I think the limited number of fans who still attend games that would "boo" when Muller was announced won't boo, and perhaps applaud (in the sense of appreciate) what he's done. Yes, he has had a number of failures. It has been a decade. Think about all that has happened. He always gave his best, which wasn't good enough. He lost one of his best friends in a plane crash that he was supposed to be on. For a couple of years, the Birds were in national conversations, culminated in 2017. He did not have the success we all wanted him to have, but he tried. For a long time. I've heard from a number of folks that previously attended every game, but stopped after the last few years saying they want to make sure to get to a game before the season's over, to see Muller at the helm one last time.

I won't make any excuses. This season has been the most telling that he has to go. I was originally one who thought he'd be safe this year due to financial implications. Over the season, GoBirds85's favorite saying "Some say we can't afford to get rid of him, I say can we afford to keep him?" really started to resonate. A few weeks ago, I heard the money was there if Brennan wanted to make a move. That info followed by the losses to SIU, UNI, Loyola and now Indy State made it real.

The other thing that was obvious this season, more than others, is the lack of player development. After Sy went down, and the game Howard went down, he found himself using a 7-man rotation that was really 6. "When Howard went down, our short bench got even shorter," he said after the game. Fact is, you have 13 scholarships. Of course there will be a significant difference in talent from #1 to #13. But when you get in the middle, 7,8,9,10 - there shouldn't be that much drop off that you don't feel confident going deeper into the bench.

Anyway, not going to beat a dead horse on this one any longer. I appreciate his dedication to the university both as a player and a coach. I wish him well. He'll land a nice assistant job soon. If I'm him, I'm probably taking the year off just cuz.

Retaining Muller would have been the very definition of insanity...doing the exact same thing over and over again while expecting a different result.

Ten years was long enough. Thank you, Larry Lyons.

Have to really feel for the players... this has probably been a very difficult past 30 hours. A lot of different emotions I am sure they have felt. From initial sadness, to (potentially) wanting to rally together and win coach some games to send him off, to "confusion" (for lack of a better term) of not having coach on the sidelines tomorrow. It is a lot to process. UNI game 24 hours away and a ton has happened since Indiana State.

Do you think UIC will be at the top of the MVC anytime soon? I bet they give him 3, maybe 4 years then they will move on if he's not. He's going to need to win the Valley to move onto "green pastures".

I was being mostly sarcastic. I do believe Coach Muller will be a very solid assistant at a P5 if he even wants to. I just hope people don't expect instant gratification from our new HC in the same manner they were pitchfork and torching our current LEADER out the door without a semblance of a bona fide replacement.

I would say the new HC will have about 3 -5 years to get us dancing. He definitely won't get 10 years. With the way the portal works now, the expectations will be high. Drake flipped it in 2 years with 2 different HCs. I assume this fan base will expect the same.
