I don't understand how these schools can afford the travel costs, not just for football and basketball, but all sports. Only Texas as more than one conference team in the state. The state! MSU next closest team is in Western Kentucky! New Mexico to Deleware.

I'm ALL for movin' on up...but how do we afford it AND keep up with the NIL climate without bankrupting our dept?

I'm all for it. But help me here folks. Make the numbers work for me. Show me how we do it outside of a very very large donor. Unless one of you has some pull and can reel in that very very large donor.

It would be interesting to sit down with Dr. Zenger and Dr. Bowman TODAY, in a think tank, and see what their opinions are given today's surf shifting climate...and how we should proceed. I'm not sure they'd be of the same opinion as 2010, but who knows! I'd love to see that convo, though.

One has to wonder where the $5M is coming from.
CUSA...same thing for GM when they moved up. Part of the deal for most conferences at the grownup table when a school moves from the kiddy table.

for sure ... but still nothing compared to Stanford and Cal going for the Pacific 10 to the Atlantic Coast Conf ... football is nothing with 5 or 6 Saturday road games only requiring a friday schoold day being missed 5 or 6 times. It's the other sports that will take a beating ... lot more games and lot less budget.

Oh they're going to get quite a bit of money from the ESPN and the Fox network contracts they have per school.
They have a good deal with ESPN. Each school gets about 800K per year.

I don't see any Fox Network deals. And that would make sense, since ESPN and Fox sports are competitors.

Dept doesn't pay NIL. Fans do.
Fair point but the businesses and individuals that contribute towards NIL are often the same ones that donate to the athletic dept. If they contribute to NIL they may not contribute as much to the dept. and vice versa. When you move up in conference affiliation you need to move up in contributions to BOTH. Look at the NIL 309 campaign poll on the BB board and see how many fans we have willing to commit to donating $309. You can count them on one hand.

On the other hand we have those who have stated they will not contribute, but complain that we suck and cannot attract players who can get us back to being competitive.

Plus a G5 school gets more money when playing P4 school. They can schedule 2 of these game and increased TV to pay the 5mm off in a few years. This should not be an obstacle.

Also only a portion of a scholarship is truly an incremental cost. The salaries of coaches is probably the biggest hurdle.
