Lindenwho? Lindenwood, an up and coming football program in suburban St. Louis and new to FCS. They pose some problems and that's not Coach Speak. They have tall WRs and they can score in a hurry. Western had them down 31-14 but Lindenwood came back to win 43-40. We need to get off to a faster start offensively, but even if we do don't expect the Lions to roll over. They won't quit so we can't either. We need a game. We need to climb back in the saddle and try again. We need a win. Let's Get It.

Played like assballs most of the game last week, on the road, against a good defensive team and it still came down to a last minute drive.

Don't let that happen here. Get in sync, come out hot, and get right. Just win.

Game notes are posted for the game, and I noticed right away starting LG Kobe Rios is not listed in the two-deep. I didn't see anything, anyone know, is he hurt? Justin Bromagen listed as starter.

Rios - Illinois State football seeks answers for poor starts following first loss

The Lindenwood QB also poses a problem. Coach Spack says that he is a very good scrambler and those type of QBs give us trouble. Lion QB Cole Duggar has had very few negative yardage plays and our D has been very good at sacking the QB. Something's gotta give. Get him down.

Good point on slow starts offensively the last 2 games. Still finished with 460+ yds against WIU, so we got it going mid Q2. We got some improvement in 2nd half of EIU game, but nothing to brag about obviously. So we need to address this for sure. It may be the OL needs more time to develop. Just one more game before we face SDSU, then ISUb (break ?), followed by a very tough YSU.

A little home cooking and nice weather should get our offense clicking again. Noon kickoff, high of 82 degrees, light winds, mostly sunny.

Let's go Redbirds ... get it back on track !!!

Yes good weather for Family Day on Saturday. Maybe even a little too warm, but today it's been off and on rain here in Normal. I wonder if they practiced in the bubble. The turf has been installed. I've heard that they could use it if needed.

Complicated scheduling in August and September for us, but the result this week is that we plan on being at Hancock Saturday (instead of being at the cabin and taking in DIII #18 Bethel vs. #8 St. John's). Should be a nice day for a game, and looking forward to the Birds getting it together after last week's glitch.

Illinois State -18.5

Over / under 53.5
so about 36 to 18 or so. Assuming offense rights itself for most part .. I think we can score 35+ on this program. They are much more offensively accomplished than defensively. But I think our explosive defense, plus our ability to completely shut down run games of weaker programs, makes the more predictable. And I trust our defensive athletes are much better than their athletes. Common opponents .. they played WIU on road too and WIU put up 480 yards and 40 points .. had 14 pt lead but faded down stretch. WIU had 27 first downs to their 19, and never punted all game. The WIU score didn't reflect the play from scrimmage where we outgained WIU 465 to 205.

So I'm assuming offense clicks earlier nd we win by score around 42 to 21 .. maybe more if we get to their QB like we should. They do have a decent RB, but that plays to our strength on defense.

I have long maintained that attendance at Redbird Football games can only be understood and predicted by examining the social/promotional aspects. The won/loss record of the Redbirds, the quality of the opponent, playoff implications - all of those things have very little to do with attendance.

That theory will be put to the test over the next three games.

Tomorrow - We face Lindenwood, a school that some of fans have never heard of, and we are taking the field after a disappointing loss where the offense failed to excite. Attendance will be excellent. It's Family Day. Parents and family will come and the stands will be mostly full.

Oct 7 - South Dakota St. comes to town. This is a game for football fans. SDSU is the defending FCS National Champion, and it is expected that they will arrive here undefeated and ranked #1. The Redbirds will likely come in at 3-1 and we have a history of playing well against the Jacks. Attendance will be spotty.

Oct 14 - The Battle of ISU's. Indiana St. will be here. INSU is currently 0-3 and it would be a shock if they arrived at better than 1-4. No matter. It's Homecoming and the game will filled at close to capacity with festivities galore.

Welcome to Redbird football Festival.

I'll admit it. I live in St. Charles, Mizzurah. And I'll admit this, too. You all probably know more about Lindenwood football than I do. Here's what I know...

Lindenwood is a private university that is growing. Academically it's mediocre to below average. There have been some wealthy alums as the endowment is $150-200MM. Their trap shooting team has won the collegiate nationals and regularly shows, or some such - it's not an NCAA sport. I think their bowling team is good. DBoots is the OL coach, or was. That's about it. Nothing notable in their football history in NAIA or DII, to my knowledge.

We should kick their ace somewhere up between their shoulder blades. JMO

Forgot to mention that Jacks' game is at 6pm too, that never helps draw in the crowd either. Not that noon is a good draw for all those students who spent Friday night enjoying life. Nor is noon good for the alums who drive down I-39 either!

I always think of those November afternoon games, usually vs. WIU or UNI it seems, that we really need to win to get to 7-4 instead of 6-5. Big game, need a good crowd, and 3,500 show up! Did I mention 35 degrees and west winds at 20+ mph?? ;)

I didn't forget. Claiming a Saturday 6 pm start time as detrimental to attendance would be a lame excuse and in fact it doesn't harm attendance. The Family Weekend game last year was against SIU. That game was at 6:30 pm and it was our highest attendance game of the season at 11,127. It even out drew the 2 pm Homecoming game.
If a Sat 6 pm start is problematic for attendance it means you aren't a football school. The SEC would laugh you out of the league if one of their members used it as an excuse.
South Dakota St. played at home Saturday 9/9/23, gametime 6 pm with attendance of 19,332.

I used to live in the Lou suburbs as well and I will say that ”the hood” has come a long way from where they were. They have an aggressive vision along with ultra endowments as you mentioned where they are trying to grow their branding and educational reach.

They work with local businesses to procure interest in graduate degrees and continuous learning. Some of their adjunct business professors were highly successful business types that brought an experienced pedigree to their MBA programs. They are also trying to grow their men‘s basketball and football programs. Their enrollment is about 7,000 compared to BU at 5,500.

At any rate I am expecting the Redbirds to come out with a W on this one especially after the horrendous showing last week. As long as Spack being Spack dutifully registers on the credit rather than the debit side of his strategic machinations then this should be a good day for Redbird football.

I'm not sure I'm buyin' what you're sellin'.

I've lived in St. Charles for 25 yrs after living 37 in Bloomington. Classmates of my daughters went to Lindenwood. Two of the three daughters were offered academic free rides. None attended.

Now that I've farted on Lindenwood, I'll say this. There ain't a soul in this town that wishes them any ill will. Godspeed Lindenwood. Just not tomorrow.

What I’ll say for Lindenwood is that it is one of the most beautiful campuses I’ve seen and there stadium blows away Eastern or Westerns. I’ll bet they do well going forward
