MSU outplayed us for most of the game.

They deserved to win. Disappointed that it took us an entire half to get some offensive production.

We had some boneheaded penalties that were costly as well. Bad day at the office.

the Schnell facemask call was legit and really hurt our chances down the stretch, especially combined with the wasted timeout as play clock was running out on a punt from our 35 .. since when is a timeout worth 5 yards of field position ?????

But what pissed me off about the facemask call was the just as obvious and simultaneous horse collar the DB put on Schnell ... very similar infractions should have been called and offset .. zero doubt !!! Don't know how they missed it ... it completely 'looked like' a horse collar the way Schnell got dragged downward and backward from behind.

Obvious garbage missed call .. should have been offsetting.

Penalties were a killer.

Reading most of the comments, I have to agree with the frustration we do go through as Redbird fans. Really, it takes a special person to be a fan of ISU athletics. You have a big win, then a game like this. So many appearances in MVC tourney championship games (basketball) and always being the bridesmaids. The FCS championship game, going up very late and losing. The finish of the UCF basketball game. On and on. Not only falling just short so many times, but often in such painful, gut wrenching ways. Just venting here. Carry on...

When you get knocked down the ladder like this all you can do is regain your footing and start back up one rung at a time. The offense recovered in the second half but it wasn't enough. Mo. St had a solid D front.

So that play was 1st and 10 at the ISU 33. Davis pass was complete to Schnell for 37 yards to the MSU 30. They call the facemask which was a good call. It's a spot foul so they walk it back to the MSU 45. Ist down ISU. Net 22 yards in our favor. If they flag the horse collar (which was also the proper call) it's offsetting penalties that's correct. But it's ISU ball back at the ISU 33 replay first down. Missed call works out in our favor.

hmm ... so even though each call would be spot of foul call; when both are called, they are NOT treated as "spot of foul" ? Seems overly punitive for offensive team.

And so here's one to think about. If they called both penalties, can we decline the horse collar penalty to avoid the offset ?

Interesting, because Spack was arguing something on that call. Maybe Timmy knows more than Spack ??

Checked with a friend who is an official and he said no. Fouls by both teams before a change of possession are offset by rule.

I also asked about the delay of game after the kickoff. That was a rule change this year. After a kickoff the 40 second clock starts like any other play. The offense needs to hustle to make sure it doesn't run out. He said that's likely what happened.

I suppose that depends on the call and down and distance. For instance. Let's say it's 4th down and you come up short... offsetting fouls could give you another 4th down play. Advantage offense.

And so here's one to think about. If they called both penalties, can we decline the horse collar penalty to avoid the offset ? Great question. I believe declining is canceled by rule. But I'm not sure. I'm going to find out though.

I saw that and thought it was strange. I don't know what he was arguing. Damn big play in the game. Like the Leonard's I'll say Brock has forgotten more than I'll ever know. ;) I also just noticed I'm using the terms foul and penalty as if they're the same. Oh well to tired to fix it. How bout dem Bears!

can I answer in 8 weeks ?

Short answer ... 50/50 at this point. MoST revealed we are not quite as good as we thought a week ago. But MoST could be an improved team .. Sitting 3-1, their next 4 games (USD, InSU, WIU, SIU) are going to be easier than their final 3 (NDSU, SDSU, UNI). They could be a 5 or even 6 win team this year, so road loss by 3 to a near .500 MVFC team won't look as bad 8 weeks from now. But the FBS win over CSU may not look as good by season end either.

In theory, MoST and InSU are 2 games you can't afford to lose, given how tough rest of schedule gets. But I'm thinking it was good wake up call .. even Spack was getting ahead of himself with his glowing comments about how ready his team looked.

I am very disappointed we lost, but if MoST turns into 5 or 6 win team, it might serve as a great wake up call. Our SOS in first 3 games was very weak (3-3 NAIA, 1-4 FCS, 1-4, FBS) ... we won convincingly, but still not overly impressive.

Spack can point to this game rest of season to get our guys ready from opening kickoff. I still love the upside of this group .. just need to keep that chip firmly planted on our shoulders. Got to show up !

Tbd on the playoff implications but not good given St Xavier game on schedule.

Certainly a buzz kill as far as excitement for this team and possible abuzz kill for attendance. I had 3 others convinced to come this weekend to ISU game but now vetoed as they want to g o to the wisconsin game.

I have the solution ... let's just go out and beat WIU by 2 TDs.

Why do I always have to be the one with the great ideas ??? Wish someone else would step up and take pressure off me !!!

I expected the team to be 3-1 after 4 games. They just took a different path getting there than I expected which keeps things interesting - sort of. The team can still finish 8-3 but with lots of high scoring opponents our offense will need to be more consistent.

I feel like it's 50-50 at this point. But now we must win both the Western and Southern games and probably have to beat one of SDSU, NDSU or UNI. SDSU played NDSU tough in Fargo, so they will be as hard to beat in Normal as it will be for us to win in purple panther land. At this point I would trade the CSU win for the MSU loss, although I love it when we beat an FBS school. MSU could really surprise some teams this year. I still think their bye week was the difference maker against us, but oh well oh well. It works both ways.
