and just ask any QB what happens if the WR doesn't break off his route just right, or even worse, loses his footing for just a half second ... a horrible looking incomplete pass on what might have been a perfectly thrown ball, or worse yet .. a pick. When QBs and receivers are throwing in offseason, it is all about timing .. getting used to how they run routes .. particularly how the break off their routes, cutting, etc .. the field surface means everything.
BAM! How many times this year were QB/WR's not on the same page on option routes? :angry-banghead:

That's a valid concern but you're not going to solve that problem with partial team workouts in Jan, Feb, March. You need full team practices with coaches present.

No doubt facilities matter in a big big way for all sports and teams that have subpar facilities are handicapped. The ISU football team needs an indoor facility and ISU basketball team also needs its own top notch facility. The challenge for mid majors that have both basketball and football teams is how do you build facilities for both sports that are of the quality needed to compete as an occasional top 30 program nationally for basketball and be a consistent top 10 program for football when there are limited resources? Unfortunately each program cannibalizes the available financial resources of the other. I believe ISU will never get to where it wants to be or could be as a result of the limited available revenues associated with being a member of MVC/MVFC. Building marginally nice facilities is certainly better than none but in the long run one should expect marginal results. I am a big subscriber of the concept that it is hard to be everything to all and succeed. I would rather ISU pick one sport and poor all the resources needed in that sport so that they can indeed compete on a national basis. Tough delimna for ISU but I do not believe ISU will ever materially succeed (as measured by winning, fan attendance and ability to materially increase athletic revenue) in either men’s basketball or football unless they make some significant change(s) in their current strategy.

Our neighbors to the east received a transformational gift from the foundation of a very generous alum's foundation.

Not only did this foundation donate $15 million for the indoor football facility but also $5 million to be split between the Carle College of Medicine and for scholarships for former athletes. If we received a gift in the range of the $5 million part alone, it would be one of the largest gifts ISU ever received from a non-corporate entity. The overall $20 million gift would be much, much more than any current or planned private individual gift ISU has received.

If we can get an angel donor willing to give $5 million or more, we're going to have substantial progress toward at least some sort of indoor. Here's hoping someone with that amount of money or with an ability to steer that amount of money to this project has the passion for U of I football. That's the key - you have to have the resources and then you have to have the passion to make that sort of investment.

I'm not sure if this would work from an architectural perspective, but perhaps it's possible to put up the walls, roof, and field, and then be able to expand on the building if more funding comes in.

Sure they can. They can go skelly. They know the routes. They know the coverages. They should understand leverage on a slot. High school kids go to 7 on 7 leagues in Wisconsin all summer long. Coaches can't be out there with them. They get better.

Ok, then tell them to go out and do it. There's nothing stopping them.
