Kevin Glenn, Matt Brown, Luke Drone - pretty hard to separate those three IMHO. Glenn could run some if you want to give him an advantage there.

Go to the Media Guide and check out the passing records. Old-timers will remember John Coppens, a lefty from the early 80's, who shows up in several of the career passing categories (including unfortunately interceptions!). Naysayers may be surprised to see Jake Kolbe in the top 5 of a few categories. And Tre Roberson too. Dusty Burk honorable mention.

Receivers matter too - I think I've got most of these right: Coppens threw to Clarence Collins. Drone to Laurent Robinson. Brown to Tyrone Walker. All those receivers "played on Sundays". Roberson to Anthony Warrum. Glenn to Ricky Garrett.

Fun to go back.

Both of them could flat out make plays. Brown's my #2. Glenn won the biggest games in ISU history at the time. Ran into a stone wall named Adrian Peterson.

?
Great QB but Glenn never won a playoff game. It was Dusty Burk that QB'd the blowout of Colgate and the road win at Hofstra. Burk then led the team to an early lead at Geo So. in a national semi-final game but then GSU controlled the ball on the ground with A. Peterson and pulled away.

That was Burk? I would have swore it was Glenn. Not the first time I've been wrong today. Getting frequent enough nowadays I ought get used to it.

lest we forget

2014 Roberson to Meredith, Neblett, & Oshaughnessy

then 2015 Roberson to Warrum .. with a broken hand for nearly 2 months

then 2016 Kolbe to Warrum, Gibbs, & Schnell was also a pretty good year.

2014 Roberson was to Meredith & Oshaugnnesy .. but also had Neblett and then Warrum off the bench
2015 Roberson had Warrum ... and played with broken hand for 2 months
2016 Kolbe had nice trio: Warrum, Schnell, Gibbs .. they were in some very good company in MVFC top 10 that year.

I was just matching up leading receiver of the year with passing leader of the year. Certainly need to take into account the whole crew. I was just looking at the idea that a QB might not end up with "great" stats if he's got "no one" to throw to, but it looks like all our top QB's had a pretty decent lead WR for at least part of the time.

At this point, boring on offense is fine. Ground & pound and let that open up the pass game. I agree with JR that it can also open the run game - it obviously helps to be multidimensional - but in a playoff race, you gotta do what you gotta do to win games. Keep the defense fresh and control the clock.

Boring wins are way better than exciting losses.

I'm not sure if anyone has been keeping track of our weather tomorrow but it is looking like a wash out. If it really rains all game it changes how the game will be played and that is right into our strengths. We are going to see the same offense from the previous two weeks come out if it is raining as our coaches are not going to want to turn the ball over. I can't disagree with that strategy. I hope the average fan, to the once a year homecoming alumni stays for the game but I have a feeling it is going to be pretty empty come half time if the rain continues. I plan to do a full on rain dance tonight if anyone wants to join me! Go Birds.

Glenn was the most exciting QB by far. Would have been interesting to see how '99 played out if he didn't tear his ACL on the awful old astroturf on a rainy day against Indy State. Could they have won at GA Southern with him?

I wish Barry would have stayed one more year. I think he could have found a way to use Burk and Glenn together. Denver flushed away another chance to make a run the next season.

generally agree .. although it was light rain most of the game against NAU I believe. Damn forecast gradually went from good early in week to bad now. I'm firing Accuweather !!!!!

Another reason for revenge against insu. I remember the play. A sycamore defensive tackle was pass rushing and he had been knocked to the ground at Glenn's feet. He grabbed Glenn by the lower leg but Glenn being the uber competitor that he was wasn't going to go down just because someone was holding on to a leg. The DT then did what he had to do to bring Glenn down. He twisted the leg and the torque wrenched Glenn's knee and he was done for the season. In wrestling they have a "potentially dangerous" call the ref can make where he blows the whistle and stops the action when someone is in a position to get hurt. Football doesn't have that so if you're an insu fan you say that the tackler did what he was supposed to do but as a Redbird Football Fan it still leaves a very bad taste.

Those are good questions. How would '99 have played out with Glenn? Burk was on fire against Colgate and Hofstra but the Geo So. defense was a tough one to crack. Could Glenn have made the difference? I know one thing. He wouldn't have gone down without one hell of a fight.

Berry and Glenn (probably Burk too) will be back tomorrow to see the sycs fall hard.

I think that day and Tairse Bryson breaking his wrist were the two of the worst moments in ISU history. Football worked out OK, but basketball never recovered.

I think back to it and I didn't think at the time it was a dirty play. Just kind of a fluke. I don't blame the defender on the play. Glenn and the defender were playing football and something bad happened.

I wish I could go back in time to those two seasons. Going to Frisco was awesome, but those Todd Barry years were so much fun. You went to the game and never knew what would happen. Loved getting there early to watch Barry walk the team into the stadium. There wasn't all this fake game management stuff that sports teams do now. The Zoo was nuts, the games were fun. Just a great time in ISU sports.

Almost all runs and no passing. You could call Spack the “anti-Nagy”

Where’s all the chatter on the game? You guys all drowned? Had me worried for awhile but typical Spack football. Knew the passing game was not gonna be there so just power football. Both from the O line and our premier running back. Robinson was a monster. Then you throw in a quick and shifty RB and it’s good football given the weather. Defense was outstanding once they got a handle on the direct run off the snap. Good win!

Decided to go out in the rain for this one. Good win. Great job to battle through and win a tough one.

Only thing I didn’t like was Spack getting the penalty. He was right. Should have been 15 yards on Indy State, but I hate it could have given the game away.

I think we know Spack's MO by now. We're going to see another conservative game plan Saturday. My sense of it is this. When Spack thinks he has better talent, he's gonna play it straight up. No gimmicks, smash mouth football. He's gonna run right at you with his huge OL and All-American RB and dare you to stop him. We used to love this about him, but a few 6-5 seasons have, uhh, taken the bloom off that rose.

When the weather won't cooperate and the game comes down to running the ball and defense I like our chances and the Redbirds did not disappoint.

The Good, the bad and the "I don't understand". In reverse order

I have disagreed before with our lack of rushing the punter and I still don't understand it. Our punter has to get the ball off quickly because he gets rushed. Our opponents don't. The Ind St. punter bobbled one snap and if we had any rush at all it would have been blocked or he would have been tackled. As it was he managed to gain control of the ball and get the kick away. The next time we did mount a rush but after that we went back to token pressure. I know they don't want a roughing the kicker but you have to train your special teams not to do that. You wouldn't quit rushing the QB for fear of getting a roughing the passer call. We're giving up more than we get by not rushing the punter.

Also I don't understand why our team didn't start the game by putting overcoats on everyone that isn't on the field. It isn't about comfort, it's a performance issue. If your uniform stays drier you're going to be able to move better and faster. Also cold muscles get tired more easily. We didn't break out the coats until the 2nd half.

I don't like the sacks of Brady Davis. That's bad. The protection could be better but Davis needs to have a clock in his head and get rid of the ball when time is up. I see lots of QB's that have that knack of feeling the pressure and holding the ball until the last moment and then either completing a pass or throwing it away. I don't know if you can develop that or if you have to be born with it. Right now we don't have it.

James is good. Really good. Nothing new there. He knows HOW to score a TD*** I'll explain that in another post because it's not what you think. The three straight wins are good. Really good. Most everyone expected us to win these games but the SIU game in particular is starting to look really good. Just ask Youngstown St. and South Dakota.

I am on business travel in Jacksonville, Florida so I did not get to see the game. I saw some highlights and it was a nice run by Robinson that blew a tight game open. Good win by the Birds on a bad weather day. I heard about Coach Spack's penalty but don't know what that was all about. I will see when I watch the recording when I return home. Tough game with UNI coming up. Go Redbirds!

Well I think we all agree the passing game was off yesterday. Thank goodness our Run Game was able to get going.

UNI is defintely going to stack the line in my opinion and force us to pass next week. So hopefully we can throw some wrinkles in there next week. Beat UNI next week and I think we can go up to SD State and possibly pull off an upset. If Illinois can go into Purdue and win there then we can go into SD State
