The question now is, who replaces Kleiman? As this article speculates it will almost certainly be someone with direct links to the program. Probably same old business as usual but everything ends at some point. Not really even a ripple in the force with Kleiman was promoted. What happens this time? It will be interesting to see what the 2019 and 2020 Bison look like.

https://www.valleynewslive.com/content/sports/Potential-hires-for-North-Dakota-State-502425571.html

It appears this next coaching staff will walk into a roster that loses their main offensive talent at each key offensive spot - QB, multiples RBs, WR, and multiple TEs. They could very well have the next National Player of the Year sitting out, but I have a feeling losing so many key players and Coaches could really hurt them. I could also see him take more coaches than Bohl as KSU's resources far outweigh Wyoming's.
They only retained 3 coaches from the Bohl staff which is why you see so many new coaches. They have a true freshman QB who still has 4 years left and is supposed to be a stud. They have 4 backup running backs who have had playing time and look as good or better than the current group. They have several recruits coming in who also had FBS offers. The lack of talent will likely not be the reason they drop the next couple years.

NDSU is the Alabama of FCS. If you are a top rated 4 or 5-star recruit and Alabama offers you a scholarship what do you do? If you want to win National Championships and play in the NFL you sign up with Nick! If you are a top rated FCS player and you want to win National Championships and NDSU offers a scholarship what do you do? You probably sign with the Bison.
Now if Nick retires from the Crimson Tide do all those recruits sign? I would guess maybe not. That is where NDSU is right now. They still have tons of talent on the roster but with quite a bit less experience it appears. Can the next coach and staff recruit and keep the win train rolling? Maybe or maybe not.
How many times can you replace the coaching staff with no real impact. We are about to find out.

Look for Matt Entz, current D Coordinator, to get the job. He's the top candidate in most eyes. He even admitted in an interview on the radio today he was interested and would be talking with our AD this week. Klieman will be taking some staff with, but it's still unclear just how many. We only know of one for sure right now that is going. K-State has a lot of very experienced position coaches who will not all be replaced. Klieman also needs some recruiting ties to Oklahoma and Texas which we have none of.

It does seem Kansas state is doing the right thing by keeping some of the staff intact and having girls night or stick around. I also found to be very classy that Kleiman is coaching the Bison the rest of the year and K State understands

K-State's AD, Gene Taylor, is our old AD who hired Klieman and was there during the Bohl-Klieman transition. He understands the difficult spot this puts NDSU in and I'm sure he remembers how he felt when everything went down with Bohl (it wasn't the friendliest of endings, which is why Bohl was never considered for KState and Klieman was). I think it's pretty safe to assume there has been lots of coordinating between our AD, Gene, and Klieman throughout this process.

We are all pumped to send Klieman and our seniors off with a final W in the Fargodome. Hope you all can tune in Friday for what should be an absolutely phenomenal atmosphere and game with the Jacks.

Yeah, that's the ticket to get into the AAC. FOOTBALL. Heck, look how it helped Wichita.....

Oh, wait. They got there to a great extent because they DON'T have football. Hmmmm.....

And to think we could be like ECU right now and lose a ton of money. Like most every non P5 FBS football team. And pay money to play in some goofy bowl game. I'll say it again. Personally, I am not seeing the big deal about non P5 FBS.

What do you think about ISU's athletic situation bb fan if you cast doubt on ECU? ECU has a lower subsidy/allocation percentage on a $48.3 annual athletic budget (40.86%) than ISU does on a $27.8 (68.56%) annual athletic budget. In total dollars allocated (meaning amount provided by student fees and university contribution) ECU's total is $19.7 mm for 2017 and ISU's total for 2017 is $19mm. So for a $700K annual cost to the students the East Carolina University gets to be in the AAC and ISU resides in MVC/MVFC. That sounds like a great deal for ECU to me.

Also, ECU gets to spread their subsidy/allocation amongst 29,000 students and ISU gets to spread it amongst 21,000. So on a per head count ECU is in a better position.

BTW ISU is in the top 50 nationally for money losing athletic departments as measured by how much students/university has to subsidized their athletic department.

Should ISU start trying to expand its student population to 25000+? We just had largest freshman class in 25 years and rumored to start an engineering program soon. That would definitely bring in more money for athletics.

Where I work has an office in Fargo - I know several of the guys there who are Bison alums and season ticket holders - pointed out last night that was the first time Klieman had not wore either Green or Yellow on the sidelines. He was wearing a blueish-gray type of T-Shirt. Yes, ND State won, but their team was a little out of sync last night - 5 false start penalties - they go games without one, but then had 5???

Absolutely not. ISU should not sacrifice the academic experience of its students for adding more students for student fees. There is a reason we haven't pulled an NIU and opened the admissions floodgates for a while. I think their administrators are feeling the effects of their policies.

agree you don’t grow enrollment to benefit/enrich the athletic department but well planned/strategic growth to strength and enrich the university side is a good thing. Look at the enrollment of nearly every top public university in the last 25 years including Uiuc. So many benefits (for the university and students) from economies of scale and having a variety of educational offerings but doing it right can be difficult. Growth should include maintaining or increasing the quality of students that attend. I can remember uiuc being around the mid 30,000 enrollment and now pushing 50,000 and still growing. UIC has taken the lead as the second best ranked public university in Illinois and they are raising undergrad enrollment from nearly 20,000 to around 30,000: If there is growth athletics will benefit in many ways (more students fees, more students fans and bigger long term donor base) but again growth neeeds to be for the benefit of the university side if ISU is capable of growing

Agree NIU, WIU, SIU EIU are not only struggling with falling enrollment but also some, if not all, are admitting a lower academic profile student just to try and stop enrollment decrease. Horrible situation for these institutions long term and will take a long time to correct. Hoping ISU can create some reputation, quality and size separation from all of the state directionals and become the clear first choice to attend and those are the default schools when applicants can’t get into ISU That would also be a great thing for ISU athletics

Two things: the state is giving us the least funding per student by far. I don't see that going up even if we add 2,000-3,000 students. I also don't think we have the donor base to offset that and tuition alone would not fund paying all the additional staff and resources it would take to add that many students. We are at a sweet spot right now. We don't want to go down but we also really can't afford to go up.

As far as NDSU, if all the talent they have pans out and the remaining staff is legit, then they can continue o succeed. There is a difference though as Bama will sign multiple top prospects at many positions and at least one person turns out. Does NDSU have the same? Or if their next man up doesn't succeed, is the next person after still at that top level?

I was wrong about NDSU vs SDSU. I thought SDSU might be able to catch them and they got throttled. I still watch the game though and see NDSU's talent who produced in the game mostly gone. Sure, the talent can be there to win, but it's kind of like ISU basketball, will the guys sitting out actually pan out on the court?

Wow - that is big news for Klieman and K-State. Makes sense. Not good news for ND State.

My prediction is that the Bizon won't miss a beat; it will just be a new head coach who wins the next MVFC championship.

famous last words .. but Bison lose a lot of seniors next year. If we get our offensive passing game a little more proficient, I'm liking our chances of contending next year. I'll admit .. I had much higher hopes for this past season, but I'll start a thread with my recap and grades.

We have to take into consideration who's in our conference, we're going to have to beat very good, ranked teams every year, BUT - two of our losses were to 2 of the final 4, another to a playoff team (UNI). We lost two "clinkers" on the road to MSU and InSU by a total of 8 points. We win those we're in the playoffs.

I'm hoping Beathard and Davis having some time to work together, improved OL and WR play, will contribute to realizing the high hopes in 2019.

Good riddance!! Maybe he'll take his Iowa transfer QB with him!!
Kansas: Indiana State offensive coordinator Jeff Hecklinski is joining Les Miles’ staff as tight ends coach.

More:
Indiana State (FCS): Sources tell FootballScoop offensive line coach Mike Switzer is expected to be promoted to offensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach Joe Hastings is adding the pass game coordinator title. The school has now formally announced the promotions.

agreed .. suddenly our 5 losses don't look as bad in rear view mirror, except for fact that we played badly against UNI. But if you look at NDSU and SDSU seasons, our losses to them were much closer than most of their games ... both on score board and in box score (i.e. stats). As for our 2 "weakest" losses, ISUb and MoST .. both teams were hot when we played them .. recall MoST was top 25 at time and we played horrible 1st half. Now compare our 2 weak losses this year to last year (NAU and SIU debacles). Also consider while 3 of our 5 losses were to playoff teams, ISUb was considered 1st team out, and further a consensus pick for most screwed team to not make playoffs over other 6-4 teams from much weaker conferences like Lamar, Incarnate Word from Southland. So really we had 4 of 5 losses to playoff teams.

I know, I know, I know ... we still finished 6-5 again, and out of playoffs for 2nd year in a row. But this was one of Spack's youngest 2 deeps ever, and we have quality players on our 2nd string ready to step up.

But couple issues that can't be argued need solving:

- Pass Game .. got to get our short-intermediate pass game on terack to keep defenses honest. A full offseason for Davis with our skill players can only help. Beathard had to narrow his playbook considerably at times because of this ... this really hurt us against good teams with good defenses.
- Field Position .. got to figure out what all contributed to certain game where we got killed in field position. I detailed this in another thread .. there were games where we lost 200 to 350 yards in field position. Many things contributed to this ... inconsistent pass game, special teams miscues on punt/kick coverage, inopportune penalties or turnovers. In our convincing wins, we usually broke even in field position (which says something in itself because we didn't need field position to win). But in our losses, we usually got destroyed in field position. The simple way to interpret importance of this stat ... if you have 225 yard field position disadvantage (15 drives, ours avg start at 22, theirs at 37), then we would have needed our offense to gain 225 MORE total yards just to break even in that game and give us a better chance to win.
- Position Group needs: need immediate help (someone step up or a transfer) at following positions: WR, placekicker, and then speedrusher at DE. I like our DL, but we need more speed at times. Also need our QB to get more proficient in short to intermediate pass game .... need offseason reps !!!!!!

I know people think I am too optimistic at times ... guilty as charged !!! but for good reasons, I think. In rear view mirror, our 5 losses were not as dire looking as many of us thought when they happened. But fact remains, we fell short again and there are things to fix. My point I guess is we're not as far away as it might seem.

p.s. the STX win may not have counted for playoffs, but what does it matter which division our "patsy" played in ... it was going to be an easy win regardless. And our SOS was top 10 again, so while the STX was completely stupid to schedule, this was a 6-5 team that was 2 very close losses from being an 8-3 team. And we played NDSU and SDSU closer than most teams. Yet here we sit watching playoffs.
