If we are a one bid league, why would we want to share the Money from the one NCAA bid with 12 or 14 schools instead of 10? Makes no fiscal sense.

They're not expanding for the hell of it. The idea is to become at least a two bid league

Illinois & Northwestern
Promise Illinois all conference home games

I don't think Illinois would because they wouldn't be able to compete in football.

Good point

I understand that, but who is being talked about that raises the MVC chances to get an at large bid? Maybe I am wrong, but none of these teams mentioned have any at large bids in recent history. I think all Murray State's bids have been the auto qualifier. A few years ago they had a season like ours last year with the same end result, being left out of the dance. I personally would like Murray State, because they are a basketball school and have some name value. But after that, I see no reason to expand.

11 is actually perfect. If the presidents can come up with an extra 25000 the stupid travel oartner thing won't be an issue.

I have no idea. Maybe they think that if we have more teams they'll have to give us an at-large? Seems very Underpants Gnomes to me....

Step 1: Expand
Step 2: ???????
Step 3: At-Large!

The reason you look for "like" schools is continuity. If GCU stramrolls the Valley, it will leapfrog to an even better conference in no time - I'm sure they have the funds to pay any early exit fee.

My preferences for expansion criteria in order:
1) Unify MVF/MVFC as much as possible (NDSU/SDSU)
2) Current MBB profile (Murray State/SLU/Belmont/NMSU)
3) Proximity (same as above; maybe UIC)
4) MBB Program/Athletics investment trending upward (Dakotas again, GCU, NMSU)

I'd rather the Valley not expand at all as long as we're a one-bid conference, but if they insist give me the Dakotas and move to finally align our money sports. Belmont/Murray/SLU would be fine, too.

These are almost exactly my thoughts, with a couple exceptions. I'm not interested in expanding the MVC/MFVC beyond the Rocky Mountains (or Appalachian for that matter), so GCU is not on my list. Belmont doesn't do much for me either. Pretty far to NMSU, altho I've been to Las Cruces several times and think it's a pretty nice place. And I'd add UW-Milwaukee to #3, we recruit Wisconsin in most sports, they have a fairly representative program all around (men's and women's hoops okay, baseball pretty good, swimming pretty good, etc.).

I should have clarified. I don't want to see GCU or NMSU; I thought it was ridiculous when West Virginia joined the Big 12. At some point geography should matter. Why isn't NMSU in the MWC?

I agree with tp and dpd we need to add the Dakotas and get rid of drake and Evansville and valpo too at leasr people know what a dakota is whats a drake? Whats an evansville? Lets carve out a place on the map with universities that are names of states or cities over 1mil. Loyolas Chicago, saint louis okay, drake? Nope, belmont? No way unless they chamge their name to Belmont Nashville.

I'm going to make a two-part prediction. First, if the MVC adds1 or more schools, a lot of people on this board will not be satisfied with whom is added. Second, if the MVC doesn't add a school, a lot of people on this board will be mad that the conference chose not to expand.

Just a hunch.

My expansion thoughts are these....

First question that needs answered:

What does the Missouri Valley conference want to be?
A. A basketball, soccer, baseball and other sport conference that is happy having Central Arkansas and Dallas Baptist as conference members in some sports?
B. A conference that aligns football, basketball and other sports around a common group of schools in order to raise their collective profiles.
C. Something else, yet to be defined.

If the answer is A, don’t add anyone, no one will give us the prestige to get multiple bids in basketball, or soccer.

If the answer is B, add the Dakotas and come up with a plan to clean up the footprint around football centric schools.

As for ISU if answer is A, focus on dominating basketball like others have and use it to springboard up into a better conference.

If the answer is B, still we still need to continue to focus on hoops, but also keep a strong focus on football is important too

In my opinion we will get an invite “up” when our basketball team makes a statement and our
Football is also good. Football will not earn us the increased prestige, but we as fans will continue to have this conversation I know.

I know most of us are only looking at this through basketball glasses, but Elgin and the others aren't. Adding conference members affects a lot of other teams other than the 20 that play basketball.

I love these topics. Remember when Loyola came in? Everyone bitching about their record? They don't look that bad now. You gotta look past that. Where can they be down the line. Grand Canyon has a big upside. Phoenix is a big market.

University of Phoenix has a HUGE enrollment. :shifty:
