Now that we know that we are in the playoffs, and we know what we have behind Brady, which is not much at this point, I think we go with Jefferson and leave Baltz’ redshirt intact. Jack Baltz as a redshirt senior will be far better than Jack Baltz as a true freshman and he’s not good enough NOW to waste that year of opportunity.
I agree and think all your points are very obvious...so Baltz probably starts against SE Missouri State, right?
I agree too, but that's pretty harsh. Spack has been consistent that Baltz moved ahead on the depth chart. He was given every opportunity to prove that assessment right. Spack is many things, but stupid ain't one of them. He will not reveal his plans prior to the game.

Just a little tongue in cheek humor... ;)

Looks like Spack is leaning towards preserving Baltz's redshirt. We will find out on game day.

If we have any chance of winning or Jefferson gets banged up, Baltz should and will play. Our best chance is to plan on playing both. Baltz will eventually get better .. with Davis out, I no longer think it makes sense to preserve his redshirt at the expense of team. That and I just dont think Jefferson is going to be able to play entire game. He gets happy feet fast and tends to just fling passes under duress. Game plan for both to play a fair amount.

Let's win a scrum game and get to round of 16 ... then worry about next opponent. We can win this game if we loosen up on offense .... unlike the last 2 weeks.

Accept where we are and go into game with attitude if nothing to lose.

So Proctor's injury doesn't require surgery. Did they ever give any specifics on what the knee injury is?

so far, been wrong about Jefferson .. granted based on very little sample size at that point ... good for him !!!!

And great to hear about Proctor if true .. surgery would have wiped out 6-9 month of offseason.

During the FB live portion of the Spack show last night, coach was asked by a fan on Facebook what the future of the QB position looks like. Spack first said, "Really good question...." And then went on to discuss each QB on the roster. Said he's been impressed with Jefferson's play as of late and in the SEMO game. Baltz has moved to scout team and has been throwing the ball really well. He suggested that this is Brady's team still, though. Brady had surgery earlier this week and the next day he was visiting the football office. He said the team trusts and has faith in Brady. Then went on to say how they will sign one more QB, hopefully 2 in the 2020 class. With new signees at the QB position, he looks for athletes who play QB. That way, if QB doesn't work out, he can move them around (Hatfield, Broadinax, etc.)

It sounds like as of now the QB depth chart next year will be Davis, Baltz, then ???. Maybe Jefferson changes positions. I'm sure a nice post season run and a good off-season would change that.

this may be our problem recruiting and developing HS QBs ... why offer schollies to kids you aren't sure will stay at that QB position. I would surmise this is precisely why we have struggled with QB depth chart every year.

Start recruiting guys you believe will be good FCS QBs and develop them. Stop bringing in guys you know will move to another position withing a couple years. It clearly aint working for us !!!!!

Still sounds like when they go out recruiting for QBs they are really looking for DBs.

I would agree with your assessment - they are not recruiting QBs.

The more I think about this, the more it amazes me that they take this approach with THE most important position in football. I realize schollies are commitments, and you want to get something out of every schollie, especially in FCS with just 63 schollies ... but QB is the LAST position I would ever consider this approach .. we need mroe QBs capable of plaing FCS football and using the entire playbook. Stop recruiting all around athletes at QB position ... you do that with RBs and WRs and LBs and DBs, or OL to DL or vice versa ... not QBs.

This clearly is not working in 10+ years for Spack ... clearly. We need to recruit QBs and develop them right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jake Kolbe was one of the highest rated high school QBs in the state of Illinois. It wasn't like dude was a track star and came here seeing a football for the first time.

The problem is system. Go get athletes, but don't try to make them 7 step pocket passers. Get em in read option, hurry up offenses.

Want to know why Jefferson has been successful these last 2 games and Robinson has 500 yards in those two? The system is no longer a pocket pass system. When the opponent cant risk not spying a QB, Robinson never faces a box of bigger than 7. He has proven to eat 6 man boxes alive.

I. Hate. Pocket. Passing. In. FCS. Football.

It no longer works. The game has evolved beyond it.

good points, but I still say the only way to compete with the best teams in MVFC and FCS are to be able to pass and run. I think passing threat has to be there first, then to lesser extent the run threat. We got 2 perfect match ups in SEMO and UCA. But we always struggle in upper MVFC games if we can't throw some to keep them more honest. No way to compare SEMO and UCA run defenses to NDSU, SDSU, UNI, etc.

But agree with your main point about knowing who we are and what we can do. We know exactly who we are right now, and Jefferson is playing under control .. and that helps a lot against lesser defenses. We'll see about Bison.

That said, see my post on NDSU game thread about NDSU interior ... supposedly Nicholls St found some holes going right up the middle with certain blocking schemes. There's always holes, even with the Bison though less so. but you ahve to find them and exploit them without becoming predictable.

Here is the Spack show- The clip where he discusses this is at -19:40

I may have poorly paraphrased. Regarding recruiting, he wants to sign at least 1 but ideally two per year. One being a kid that is a QB and can stay there. "The other you probably want to be an athlete that you can move if he doesn't make it as a QB."

Hope that clears some things up and eases any frustrations!

hate to say this, but looks like Davis has just fallen apart recovering from surgery, as far as personal grooming and weight goes. I don't think he'll be ready for 2020 the way he looks today !
