Illini 247 guy derek piper reported that Chris was at the Wesleyan game Friday. I think he really wants that Illini offer. Their message board people mostly think he isn't good enough for them. Most, not all.

Illinois has basically struck out on every 2019 recruit they have offered thus far. Not looking good.

Did he say if he was behind Illini or IWU bench?

But only because they have a poor coach and a meathead AD who thinks you can throw money around and it will fix everything. Thus far his two major hires have been complete failures.

Do we really want a kid who has backed out of his commitment? It’s clear he wants something bigger. If he did come to ISU he would leave soon as he’s proved himself. Far as I am concerned it’s time to forget this kid and move on

Yes. We want this kid.

I don't blame any student-athlete with professional aspirations for maximizing his value, testing the waters, or being an active participant in his own future success. Kids hear a lot of contradictory advice from AAU coaches, scouts, college coaches, high school athletic directors/coaches, and parents.

If Dan thinks he can help us win, and Chris thinks ISU is in line with his professional (and educational) goals, we all should want him.

Recommit, Chris. Unlike at Illinois, where the staff and fans consider you the best of what's left, you've been our priority for years. You ARE wanted here.

Payton was one of many Central Illinois kids near the Illinois bench, the kid from Gibson City who just got an offer from UIC was there as well. Payton did go in the back afterwards.

If it's true that he hasn't qualified, his offers will most likely be limited. Schools that can afford to be more discerning will .... leaving those "less fortunate" (mid majors) to take a chance and purse with more rigor hoping they have the edge/better relationship if he does qualify or can be part of their program in the future... sound familiar. Illinois and other second tier P6 schools may pursue 4 and 5 star recruits that have not qualified but generally not 2 and 3 stars. Its all effort vs. risk/reward IMO.

I personally think Payton would be a starter for the Illini within 2 years, should be qualify. That said, I'm pretty sure ISU's starting 5 for the next few years would bear Illinois' starting 5 more times than not, so I think that is important.

Illinois has a history of taking 5 star recruits and making them Latvian B league players or insurance salesmen after 4 years. ISU has now created a culture of taking 1-3 star players and getting them to play at a higher level every time they step on the court.

The smart money may be trying to come back here.

:text-+1: I understand Payton wanting more which is fine but also agree ISU should move on too. Not a good fit IMO and Payton comes with some baggage (grades) and priority issues (ex...giving little or no notice to coaches/team to miss big EYBL weekend due to wanting to go to prom... just one of a couple of examples).

It might be a good thing for Payton to go away from home for a bit to focus on grades and hoops. Sometimes staying close to home can be a distraction.

ISU has moved on. I wish the fanbase would as well.

It seemed to me that ISU had moved on from Patton some time ago. I think its best for both parties. The kid has some issues that I believe would become distractions. Muller already offered him and most likely understood Payton and his issues. The kid backed out, enough is enough.
