Am I one of the few who thought we didn't play very well? Glad we got the win, though. I think a lot of these close Chicago St games have to do with their opposition not taking them as a tough opponent, given their decades of substandard history.
They are playing better this year. They were up almost 20 points on Murray and the SIU game was close the majority of the game. They kicked the crap out of Valpo and it wasn't as close as the final score.

CSU was already a hard sell but I don't know how you recruit as an independent and playing so many games on the road.

One thing I haven't seen talked about yet is the drastic change in the last two games versus the previous 3. During the three-game win streak, the Birds went to the line 17, 34, and 27 times. In the last two games (one blow out loss and one game that should've been a blow out win) they went 13 and 6 times. As many have said, this offense so far becomes stagnant at times. A great way to counter that is by being the aggressor and force the issue. Get in the paint and get to the line. That is what propelled ISU during their win streak. The last two games, the guys have been hesitant to get paint touches and have been out physicialed. Get back to doing what works. Cut and drive to the basket, and kick out when it makes sense. Play off two feet. There were a handful of times where DB would drive to the bucket and kick out while in the air, which lead to TOs.

The Birds made some good plays last night and were the better team. ISU might be the only team in the country with a shot clock violation in every game. There was some luck mixed in there as well with some whistles going their way. Sissoko definitely flopped on one of his charges ;).

Glad to be going into the Xmas break with a W. Pedon said in the postgame that they'll let the guys go home for a few days and return for practice on Xmas night with a game on Dec 28. Always interesting to see how a new coach handles the holidays.
You mean the one he was already halfway to the floor before the ball handler even touched him? Or the one where the guy had him beat on the baseline, so H just went down?

No. It was an ugly win. But that’s more appreciated than a pretty loss.

There was really only one way to run a 2 on 1 break and one way to run a 3 on 2 break back in the day. Stan Albeck was the first coach I saw at a clinic go over different options with the 3 point line. On a 3 on 2, he liked a shooter drawing a defender and taking a quick 3, then having a 2 to 1 rebounding advantage where there was still a good chance of scoring on the miss. Then again, I believe he had a shooter named Hersey Hawkins. (But if you are implying many players don't know what to do on a break, I think you might be right.)
Hersey H was totally awesome!

I think Chicago State tends to make any game look frantic/spastic. There really isn't a lot of game "flow" in their style.

Found it interesting no Petrakis (or Schmitt). A difference between DM & RP (at least as I see it) is Dan used to pull players after a bad possession; RP may pull them after a bad game.

I was also going to say I think that this is just how Chicago St. forces people to play. Murray looked absolutely awful as well.

As to the guys not playing, I think this was more about matchups with Chicago. Something I'm noticing is that we seem to adjust our lineups to how the other teams are running rather than trying to force them to play with us.

55 gallon barrels of Kool-Aid and Everclear (flashing back to 1989 here) spread throughout the concourse of Redbird. That'll be one rowdy crowd. Maybe we can get Toby Keith to supply the cups. Hulka, though, will be participating with tea and strudels.

Quinn...."I mean, NBA championship.....random December game vs Chicago St. Sure those are close to the same."

You missed my point. It does not matter what game it is. The fact is, you don't have to be 100% to contribute. I was happy to see Liam out there toughing it out and getting his game legs back.
No you made it sound like he wasn't tough if he didn't go out hurt or sick and play. Which is BS and is how players get hurt long term. If he's hurt, he shouldn't play.

I don’t post here often. So far I am pleased with the job Pedon (and staff) are doing. I see better basketball IQ, better defense, and better shot selection. The talent isn’t there yet and obviously that is not going to happen in year 1 with a new staff at a mid major, but so far so good. If this team can finish in the top 7 of the conference that will be a positive. I don’t know how many games we will win but I think we can be a team that other teams don’t want to play.

I agree with all of this. Overall, we play a much better brand of basketball. We work the ball much better on offense and take good shots. We don’t fire up as many prayer 3s or dumb 1 v 1 jump shots off the dribble as in the past. As well as we don’t typically fire up shots way too quick in the shot clock. We work the shot clock until we get a good one. We’re a much more organized team and a well-coached ball club that I can get behind.

Firing a shot up too quick is never going to be an issue. Now, running the shot clock down to 1 second on the other hand....

Anyway, Chicago State just gave Minnesota all they could handle. The Gophs got out with a 3pt win.

So what you’re saying is . . . Minnesota sucks?

Gophers have a pretty nice set of freshmen, team started out okay, using the freshmen in the rotation, but last few games hasn't been going well. Battle, last year's leading scorer, missed a few games early and is still getting into form (he loves to toss up the trey's, whether he's hitting them or not). Dawson Garcia, transfer from UNC, and before that Marquette, has been so-so so far, altho the leading scorer. Losses to DePaul, but also Michigan, VA Tech, Mississippi St. and Purdue. So they've played some decent competition.

I am truly so effing out of "it" - so, I thought OT Elite was "the pros"? They got paid to play. How do they get to CSU?

Two 6-foot-9 Florida twins ranked among the top 15 high school juniors in the country -- Matt and Ryan Bewley -- are signing with Overtime Elite, the league announced Friday, marking the first prep underclassmen to sign contracts with an American professional basketball league.

Matt, who is ranked No. 3 by ESPN for the Class of 2023, and Ryan, ranked No. 12, will forgo high school and college eligibility to join the startup league in September for contracts that are expected to pay them each seven figures over the two-year range of the deals, sources told ESPN.
