Just glancing at Southerns schedule and interesting they are playing Buffalo twice. Lost to them at Southern when they were #25 and now they go out there this weekend to face them at #14.

What has happened to the Valley???

I argue it starts with coaching hires. The league has done a poor job with hires at it's top schools. When the league was good it had young, up and coming coaches that were hungry.

Stallings, Alford, Altman, Weber, Painter, McDermott, Jacobson, Hinson (the first time), Marshall etc...coaches that were moving up.

Now you have Wardle at Bradley that is basically Moser all over again (never made an NCAA tournament and I argue for what he is paid is a rip off), Hinson at SIU, that was a great hire 20 years ago, Jacobson made his money and given up, Lansing was good his first year and done nothing since, yet stays around. Moser had one good year and is now heading back to his usual average to bad finish.

Now the only 3 guys that I see having a chance to go anywhere are Dan (starting to see a big move slipping away), Dana, and DeVries at Drake (maybe the guy at Valpo). None of their backgrounds were nearly as impressive coming into the Valley as the guys listed on the first list outside of Muller and DeVries being at nationally successful programs.

Too many average coaches and programs going nowhere.

MSU appears to have made a decent hire. Drake appears to have 2 good hires. Evansville appears to have a good hire. Bradley is on track. Early still on 3/4 but looking good. Loyola did a good hire, too. That's half the league.

To me, one of the big things is that top assistants from top teams in power 5 conferences do not come to MVC as often as they used to.

Coaches like Gard, Collins, Dawkins, Izzo, etc either stayed at their original school for big $$ as assistant until big job opened or went for first
Head job at another Power 5 school.

Donewald, Stallings, Jank all came from top programs. Dan from a mid tier P5.

The path now seems to be getting a Head coach from a lower level Mid to Low major.

Niko, Marshall, Wardell, Dana etc.
