Interesting choice. It looks like he won't be getting much of a raise, but that doesn't matter as much if dream to run your own program. Will be interesting to see the fallout. It seemed pretty clear the players vote was not Polasek. Their beloved OC might be out the door as well. I'm sure the Bison will survive, but it will be interesting to see if they can continue to compete for national championships.

yeesh ... by all means, let's let college players now decide on head coaches. I know their QB Miller made a public endorsement of the OC. Assuming he gets/takes a covid year, he'll be a pandemic-senior in 2024 possibly. .. then gone, Or maybe he leaves because he didn't get his coach. But he thinks his opinion should matter at all, much less with maybe 1 year remaining. This kid is an entitled idiot.

What a world we live in, where kids presume to make decisions like these. We know it happens at professional level more than many would like to admit, but still not too common .. Magic, Lebron, etc. But now seniors at FCS schools are chiming in ???

WTF !!!

Boosters have input ? Why not ? Player and coach team chemistry means nothing ? But then again nil means nothing even on FBS level some players become me players and that's when the break down becomes apparent because of discourse of hell johnny got a new bike but hell I got to walk to meeting I will be late ! Coach forget mikey we will bench him but if johnny late on the bike Johnny on the field. So basically yes the Coach has to be stern & fair with all and not let players dictate. But also at same time some players will play with a broken leg for a coach they have the up most respect. Then there are some players that will say F coach he don't give a S about 90 percent of the team.

input from 18-22 year old kids ? 1 having one season left ?

Need to leave the adult decisions to the adults in charge. Would you put it to a vote ... I hope not. The kid in question will be gone on 1 season ... why on earth would his opinion matter 1 bit when hiring a head coach. And if you asked 10 kids, you may get 5 different answers ... doesn't and can't work like that. There are no Lebrons or Magic's running the show at this level .. with 10 year contracts making 10x the coach.

Agree you want a coach with many attributes, including whether he will lead, develop, and inspire kids ... but no, not a popularity contest.

Adults are in charge .. or should be.

edit: well, putting aside some stupidly big NIL $ at P5 level .. those guys could be making as much as the coach in some case at P5s. But still not like at the multiples seen at next level, where there are 5-10 year guaranteed contracts for 10-40 million per year. While the head coach gets a 3 year deal for 5 million a year. And tries to keep the stud player with the 8 year deal at 30 million/year from firing him.

Trending this way for awhile. Now to the point power 5 position coaching jobs are more desirable than a FCS head job at a prestigious program. The gap is getting wider between the have’s and the have nots.

I think you can't overlook branding on your resume. USC is not only a national brand, but it is about to become part of the big 10, which will be the new gold standard of football conferences (I look forward to your angry letters about the SEC). A young coach now has HC experience and will have USC on his resume and, lets be honest, anything would be an improvement from last year's USC defense, so he will not look like a downgrade in any way.

He would probably be next in line for the USC d-coordinator gig and that is 2 or 3 lucky or good seasons away from a big name HC role making 7 figures.

Plus, USC is a private school and can pay coaches a TON and do it all without public scrutiny. I can see that being attractive.

Bob Babich (2002) left for Linebackers Coach @ STL Rams
Bohl (2014) left for HC @ Wyoming
Klieman (2018) left for HC @ K State
Entz (2023) left AC/Linebacker @ USC

Entz was the only one forced out, other two left for true career advancement. I thought Bohl made a mistake going to Wyoming and he's not been setting the FBS world on fire there. Klieman has the ball rolling at K State. Personally, I think Entz got out while the gettin' was good. His seat was getting pretty hot.

Edit: added the Babich stuff. He was eventually the DC @ Bears from 2007-10. These four represent a awfully good run of four coaches. The guy before these won two DII NCs.

This is a cool and interesting nugget and name that I hadn't heard in a while. Babich had a good run with the Bears.

Had to read back over this thread to remember the context. Roehl passed over for HC, now moves on. Seems like an odd move to me tho. What do I know?

Tennessee State (FCS): North Dakota State offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl has accepted the same role at Tennessee State on Eddie George's staff.

He had been named associate head coach a couple weeks ago.

Sorry, but I’ll never get used to Big Ten and USC in the same sentence, unless it’s somebody beating them in the Rose Bowl 🤷‍♂️
this !!!

But my personal favorite is Cal and Stanford are leaving the Pac 12 .. that is the PACIFIC athletic conference. And will next year be playing in the ACC ... that is the ATLANTIC Coast Conference.

Seriously now ???

Can you imagine the time and travel budget going 3 time zones, plus 5-6 hours air time, plus to/from airport/TSA time for all of their other sports ??

More than a little stupid.

Very interesting. Wonder if there will be an exodus of Bison.

I agree that this is a surprising destination for Roehl. Tennessee State is an HBCU, but plays in the OVC so they are eligible for the FCS playoffs. They haven't been particularly good for a while - they've only made the playoffs once since 2000. This COULD signal that the school is prioritizing football, or it might simply be an opportunity for Roehl and family to move to Nashville.

Isn't Tennessee St. an HBCU? Not to open a demographic can of worms or anything, but....
Not for Tennessee St... Roehl was their beloved coordinator whom many wanted to be HC. That crowd isn't thrilled to hear of his exit. Thinking FBS transfers potentially but time will tell.

according to some on AGS, Roehl wasn't a very good OC ... but that's just some.

Okay this didn't last long. Roehl moving now to Iowa State w/o ever coaching a practice in Tennessee, as RB Coach. Gotta read down a ways.

Didn't have time to learn Rocky Top! Did see that former Illini QB Nate Sheelhause sp? left Iowa State to the Rams. Rising star in coaching
