I would say if Beathard wasn't renewed because on a Sunday he stood on a street corner with an "All Lives Matter to our Lord" sign, then he's got a case. But standing up and doing the same thing in the hallway outside your office, that's a problem. Maybe.
Indeed it is. I have obtained a copy of the employment contract and it specifically states that if any asst. coach invokes the “All Lives Matter” mantra by either written word or speech then said football coach is deemed to be naughty in thy sight and said coach will be required to sit on the Holy Hand Grenade whilst the pin is pulled.

Makes a great Christmas present too, or Chanukah or Kwanzaa

Not coming from a personal viewpoint but a legal standpoint:
Did kneeling by the Professional Athletes fall under the same workplace as Coach Beathard’s workplace rights?
If the defendant was asked in court “If the sign that Coach Beathard hung on his door was hung up by someone from Puerto Rico, and it said Puerto Rican lives matter, would you have removed them from their coaching position?
If someone from Cuba placed the same sign on the door that Mr Beathard hung on the door, would you have remove them from their coaching position?
If Ben Carson were the OC and placed that same sign on the door that Mr Beathard hung on the door, would you have removed him from his coaching position?
Could Mr Beathard have been reacting to the pain of recently losing his wife, because her live mattered?
Is there anything in the ISU Policy that prohibits any religious statements or display of religious objects displayed on ISU property?
Do these sound like questions that would come up in a hearing?
If those questions came up at a hearing or deposition, I would object to all of them...........until the last two........... as being hypothetical and irrelevant to the matter at hand. Witnesses do not have to answer hypothetical questions because they have no personal factual basis upon which to competently answer the question..

Thanks jbird! And that’s why I’m not an attorney.

Or defunding could mean reallocating or redirecting funding away from the police department to other government agencies funded by the local municipality which could result in less violence in minority communities because defunding doesn't mean abolishing and this is why we shouldn't talk politics here!!!!! Peace to all of my Redbird brothers! Much love, Timmy.
Or you could just, I don’t know, maybe refrain from committing crimes.

The only conclusion that I can personally draw from this situation without making assumptions is that coach Beathard chose to engage in a tone of communication that was more conflicting and passive aggressive as opposed to applying a level of leadership to change the tone and energy that was present (to your point about any possibility of teaching tolerance).

This by itself, without any other information could easily be identified as a lack of leadership responsibility on Beathard's part and what none of us know is what if anything else happened behind the scenes that contributed to this. Again, from a legal perspective, the topic doesn't matter.
I agree 100% with these last two paragraphs. Well said Doug.

Strong leaders know HOW and WHEN to be empathetic, compassionate, and listen versus demanding to be heard. I am not going to weigh in on his message, but I will say that a good leader knows HOW and WHEN to deleiver a message. Based on the timing and how he expressed himself, one could argue the coach wasn't exactly displaying tolerance of other's thought.

There was an opportunity to bring players/co-workers together, listen, and have thoughtful discussions. Organizations and individuals that did this in a meaniful and genuine manner most likely earned the respect and engagement of the majority of their employees/players. Some lost the opportunity by avoiding the issue altogether. Others caused more turmoil by making overt or insensitive actions.

RedbirdSoxFan, I just came up with those objections from watching two seasons of Matlock.

The last question about Beathard's statement being linked to his wife's passing would be objectionable as speculative if asked of an ISU witness and objectionable as a "leading question" if asked of Beathard in exactly that way; however, I might not make the leading question objection if asked of Beathard, because once properly rephrased he would ultimately get his answer on the record and I would be left just appearing like an asshole.

It's clear that Coach Beathard is never going to get equitable treatment from some members of this board. They use words like tolerance and compassion while showing none. Two different types of posters went up. Multiple posters for BLM and one for ALM. Glancing back in this thread I don't see a single word of criticism of the posters placed by BLM. The Black Lives Matter supporters were given an opportunity to promote their ideas and I have treated that right with respect.
Meanwhile Coach Beathard puts up one poster for a short amount of time and listen to words used to describe that action. Petty, Childish, Demanding, Insensitive. Those words are Highly Insulting, Disrespectful, Intolerant and Toxic. They're designed to reinforce the decision to deny diversity of thought. The incredible bias against Coach Beathard makes this discussion unprofitable. This is closer to a vigilante mob than a good faith search for answers. Only my commitment to tolerance will keep me from lobbing the Holy Hand Grenade into the midst of that mob.

Yeah, I have zero percent empathy for any organization that uses racism as a means of extortion.

Ah. Extortion ... now even more clear where you stand.

Simple point .. why did Beathard even feel compelled to put the sign on his door .. he was defying BLM.

TR .. it seems like you are saying "tolerant people" all need to learn to be more tolerant to "intolerant people" ?

I know you don't see what Beathard did as an example of "intolerance", but it just is .. it was clearly a retort to the Group and the statement that Black Lives Matter .. as if that group infers Only Black Lives Matter. There is no reasonable way to interpret it as such, quite the opposite in fact.

Not to mention, Beathard is management and part of the leadership ... of a bunch of black athletes who walk by and into his office daily ... so yeah, it's different and a problem.

Everybody's tired of this thread but they keep posting. Human behavior is interesting. Ok, I get it. It's somewhat tiring for me too but in some ways it's getting easier. All I have to do is cut and paste.

"I find this happens a lot in social and racial issues. One side has a hard time explaining why they object to something said so they choose not to focus on the actual words that are spoken or written but how those words made them feel. That's the real rabbit hole because anyone at any time can claim that something made them "feel" uncomfortable.

Examples -
Kurt Beathard could choose to interpret the Black Lives Matter poster placed on his door as a personal attack made to make him feel like his recently deceased wife didn't matter. I don't think that was the intent at all. I think it was placed there to promote the BLM movement.
And Illinois State athletes can choose to interpret Beathard's All Lives Matter poster as an insult to them and an attempt to undermine the BLM movement. Again, I don't think that was the intent. I think Coach Beathard was merely attempting to express his own views that supported his wife and his religion. Both sides would be reading things into the messages that were not said and neither side should be allowed to do it. When you start reading things into messages that aren't there you begin feeding your own intolerance."

Check out the comments on this Facebook page for some insight:

Madbird, good find and I am really glad that you posted this because it gets to the heart of the matter as to why it is important to maintain Diversity of Thought.

I'm not going to try to defend all the comments on the Facebook page or even everything written in this thread. There are comments on that FB page made against BLM that I do not agree with. Both sides have extremists that most of us reject. In the FB page comments section I also found a link to BlackLivesMatter.com. I believe that Black Lives do Matter, so I hoped that I would be able to read the articles and remain supportive of the things that were being said. Unfortunately that was not the case.
Here's a brief article discussing the Jussie Smollett trial:

Statement Regarding the Ongoing Trial of Jussie Smollett

Jussie Smollett Graphic
December 7, 2021

As abolitionists, we approach situations of injustice with love and align ourselves with our community. Because we got us. So let’s be clear: we love everybody in our community. It’s not about a trial or a verdict decided in a white supremacist charade, it’s about how we treat our community when corrupt systems are working to devalue their lives…

This is a trial concerning whether or not a reported hate crime was real or a hoax. I would think that BLM would consider hate crime trials serious business. It's coming down to the word of one black man vs. two other black men although there is other evidence as well. Somebody is lying. I don't think the trial is a white supremacist charade. I strongly disagree with that description. I would not want to align myself with a movement that makes those types of statements. I think the court needs to rule on this matter to better protect the victims of hate crimes in the future. Remember this isn't an extremist in the comments section. This is the official BLM website. At a minimum Illinois State University needs to allow employees to provide alternative viewpoints to the official position. I wonder how well ISU officials really explored BLM before providing an endorsement.

I get your point here, but you just posted this collage below on Monday .. did you post this hoping someone tried to defend every idiot out there that literally thinks they want to defund the police.

For the record .. I'm a moderate liberal, and every liberal I know makes fun of Jussie Smollet - there is no argument, and he has so little support it is quite pathetic. Also, I know of no liberals that want to defund the police, they do want to hold the bad cops accountable. And most moderates I know get the difference and offense taken when white people respond to Black Lives Matter with All Lives Matter, with some stooping to hide behind their religion, like Beathard did.

Speaking of religion, I will bet my house the big guy upstairs supports BLM .. yes, BLM. And no, not the looters that usuallyshow up after BLM marches in larger cities with inner city crime problems (socio-economics 101, it happens in many big cities around the world, with far less diversity)

And just because some black (and white) looters show up after dark to rob/destroy stores shortly after black (and white) BLM protesters march ... doesn't make the BLM group responsible for the looters crimes. That some of you reflexively conflate these separate things, due to color of skin, speaks for itself.
