The good news is we'll get to do this whole "extended noncon break" thing two more times this year. There are 8 days off between the Horton game and hosting NDSU and then again leading up to Kentucky. I understand their are finals and the Holidays in there, but having three 8-day down periods between games two months into the season is something. Hope we get wins at Horton and SEMO or we'll be right back here

Yak is 19-36 in valley play, 35-49 overall entering his 4th year. Using the sentiment around here (of which I understand and endorse for the most part) he should have already been jettisoned by UIC. Yes he is off to a respectable start this year and we will soon see if he keeps it up. I highly doubt he does anything meaningful on a multiyear basis.

Moral of Yak story....sometimes it takes more time than the mere 18 months that Pedon has enjoyed in order to have some success.
Yak story may be like Porter at Loyola. Porter in the first, 2 years at Loyola when Loyola was in the Horizon league was 7-23 and then 15-16. Loyola joined the MVC and Porter clock kinda started all over again with Loyola getting used to MVC and recruiting and didn't go on his run until year 4 in the MVC/ year 6 total. . Yak might end up being like that.

And nobody is calling for Pedon in any way. Though I think we’d all expect to be far better than UIC was last year if you ignore first year in MVC.

O I agree and I am patient with Pedon bc I like him and like what he's trying to do. Problem with everyone was leaving a taste in our mouths after Wednesday and now waiting. Was it trying to get rotation, 3rd game in 3 days, Wright State came out on fire? We don't know but waiting to play til Thursday is hard on everyone fans, Pedon, players.
My main thought is in today's world and recruiting landscape how long is too long. Porter was year 4 in MVC and his 6th year total at Loyola when he went on his run. Wardle was year 4 and didn't finish above 5th in conference until year 8 which was last year. A rebuild like Pedon is doing takes time and takes time with the freshman that he's bringing but in but in today's world of NIL and transfer portal how long is too long...

This is grossly inaccurate. UIC was in the Horizon for Yak’s first two years, where he went from 6-10 in year one to 9-10 in year two. They made the jump to the MVC last year where he was competing with a Horizon roster. It’s not remotely the same situation as Pedon. Also tough to make the Yak comparison. When they made the jump to the Valley the league ranked 5 spots higher nationally than the Horizon. They don’t jump, he’s likely a top half of the league team and seeing continued improvement. His clock somewhat reset when they joined a new league.

Thing with Wardle was winning MVC tourneys. That buys time to get to year 8. But whether Porter farther back or Wardle it was different even 4-5 years ago before the portal changes.

good catch i just looked at his stated conf record in bio. but yak did not light it up in yr2 of horizon and was only 15-20 cumulative in horizon which is nothing remarkable but certainly trending right way. horizon conf finishes of 11th and 8th place, yr 1 yr 2 respectively

I don't like long breaks. I don't like road games after long breaks. I don't like road games against improved teams after long breaks. I don't like road games against improved teams after long breaks that give you too much time to dwell on the pants shitting the last time we played.

Let's just not get killed, Sam I am!
Fixed that for you

Are there known injuries on the team that are needing to recover? If so, then I would obviously choose the rest, but I don't believe that to be the case unless I missed something. Otherwise, I would want to ride the momentum and keep on playing. The reality is that the team and us fans are sitting with an awful taste in our mouth for over a week. Sure, had they won in Florida, this whole convo probably isn't happening but coming off a stinker to play a conference game on the road is a tough ask having sat for a week.
‘Cept we didn’t have any momentum, so there’s no energy to ride . . .

I was saying if we were in the same spot as UIC. I’d want to get back on the horse and keep it moving.

To put a bow on this, last season we had three times where we had a strange amount of times inbetween games.

Lost at Murray State 8 days after the MTE.
Lost vs Ball State 7 days after Horton.
Lost at UIC 9 days after beating Chicago State.

We’ll be in a similar situation here over the next four weeks. We’ll see if there might be something to this thread I’m pulling on. I could very well be wrong and hope I am.

We learned tonight on the coach's show that the breaks in the schedule are, indeed, by design. We'll see if it pays off on Thursday.

They have 9 weeks to play 11 non conference games and 2 conference games. That's less than 1.5 games per week. Maybe start playing a week later in the season? Its not going to complete get fixed because they will give them finals off and a few days around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I don't like to play a team that's coming off a loss. I don't like to play a team that has a player suddenly unavailable that looks like it will be bad news for them.

I like that venue for hoops
I believe you are talking about credit one? If so I agree it is an easy comfy environment to watch games. Easy in and easy out with easy parking. Been to many high school games and college games there. Comparing redbird vs credit one I feel redbird is more of a sterile environment due to fact that crowd seems further away.

So you guys that are calling for heads to roll after 1-2 years dont ...get it, do you? A coach does not come in an suddenly 2 star players turn into 4 star players. And it takes years, not months, to build culture. It takes buy in from team, from fans, from HS coaches, recruits, high schools, the University itself.

When you switch a coach in college basketball, you are signing on with that coach for 3 years minimum because by getting a new head coach, you are not trying to do a quick switch- you are tearing down and rebuilding entirely, which takes time. I think you guys need to take a realistic look at your expectations and understand that.

I think someone else posted this, maybe Grad2011. No one is calling for Pedon's job. You're saying three years. Minimum. Okay - when should we care about progress? Three seasons is roughly 95-100 games. At 14-24 we're 40% into that. Personally, I am in on Pedon. I don't want him fired. I believe they'll get better. I believe in his mission and the way he recruits the Midwest and his embracing the community. I think he's the right guy for the job. Evaluating though, we're ten games under .500. Our offense just doesn't work. He hired a staff where one assistant never coached a game and we have no clue why. He hired another to be DOBO and promoted him to assistant and he'd never done the job before. The rest of the staff outside of Judson, who is really only here as a figurehead, are under 25 years old. We don't have a lot of measurable progress to point to. I feel like that is where the criticism on here comes from and those are real red flags, not just message board talk.

I don't think anyone is calling for his head. For me, the positives still outweigh the negatives. The last game was horrendous. Period.

I think it's also OK to be a little frustrated when teams like Evansville and UIC are off to very nice starts. That doesn't mean people are advocating for a change.

Where is this narrative that people are calling for Pedon to be gone coming from? Being critical on performance does not mean people want change. If you don’t get mad about the Wright State game the are you even a fan? I’m confident Pedon is the right man for the job, but at the same time games like Wright State are unacceptable. Pedon knows that and probably told the team the same.
