Drake lost because they did not make free throws. On the season they shot around 78 percent. For the game they were 6-14 - several of those misses were on the front-end of a one-and-one. Go 12-15 - win the game - the lead would have extended and Washington State would have had more pressure. Not Good.

THE VALLEY SUCKS - SURE WE DO TOO BUT WE OWE NOTHING TO THE VALLEY - ITS DONE NOTHING!!! WE ARE A MINOR LEAGUE CONFEREENCE - LEAVE THE VALLEY -
If this is what keeps our football in the MVFC (I’m sure there’s more to it), I have to ask why? The Valley is now a 12-team one-bid league, the TV deal still sucks and we’re still at a level where the best players get poached. From a financial perspective, might as well drop down MBB to the MAC and take the step up in FB.

If our sole team in the tourney is going to lose its first game, every Valley team is taking home a smaller share than any other conference at this point.

I’d miss our in-state rivalries, but now we’re not guaranteed home-and-homes with everyone anymore anyway. And as long as the MAC has an ESPN streaming deal we can still watch all the games - maybe more because there would be fewer regional blackouts.

I’m sure we won’t leave the Valley and I’m fine with that, too, but there is no more difficult path to the NCAA Tournament than what we have right now.

Other than the missed FT’s, I thought the turning point in the game was with about 6:30 minutes left in the game, and 21 seconds left on the shot clock, Tucker fired up a 3 that misses and Brodie picks up his fourth foul going after the rebound. If they would have worked for a better shot and got the lead up to 10 and Brodie doesn’t get that foul (and maybe doesn’t end up fouling out). Drake got out scored 20-7 after that miss.

Is it me or did Coach Devries manage Tuckers playing time strangely towards the end? He was sitting out at I believe over the 5 minute mark until under 3:30 left and came in after the timeout. Then he would sub him out on the defensive end a few times and sub back in on offense. I guess I haven’t watched enough of Drakes close games to know if this is standard. Is Tucker that much of a defensive liability? The announcers even commented only had 2 fouls at the time. I think it’s tough for a player to have a good flow in the game if he’s being pulled every other play. Tucker therefore seemed off offensively when he would come back in. Another thought I had was if there’s any pro scouts watching this is a sure way to tell he is a defensive liability if his dad doesn’t even trust him on defense.

I thought Tucker was trying too hard to be “the man” to prove how good he is and not just playing. He forced a lot of shots, many of them during times they were trying to extend a lead. He is not McDermott, but seems to think he is.

I didn't see the game, so I can't remark on what specifically you're talking about. But imo Tucker is a Coach's dream. In all the times I've seen him play live and on TV, I've never once thought he had an attitude about being a good player. I've always thought his attitude is more lunch bucket...he comes to play.

He's as good a player, currently, that I've seen in the Valley last 5 years, maybe since McDermott. From a fundamental perspective, he's off the charts.

If I heard it correctly, not a single player was on the Utah State roster last year. They just won a tournament game. With the portal it can be done. Build it in a year.
That's what I understand, I posted something about it on one of the threads here. Hard to believe in a way, but it can be done.

Awesome story and it can be done. It sounded like he brought his entire coaching staff which had to help with continuity and being able to explain and teach the new players.

He also brought 2 starters ... the leading scorer and a PG that averaged double digits and 6.6 assists to 1.9 turnovers per game. Having two premier starters that understand the system helped significantly.

I think that is perhaps one difference in hiring an existing head coach versus bringing is an assistant who needs to bring in all new pieces.

They retained a freshman that redshirted last year and a walk-on ... so 0 points from the previous sesson. However, the 6'3" freshman guard (Falslev) was the 2020 high school athlete of the year and an older freshman because he did a mission. He averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebiunds, 2.4 assists and shot 56% from the field (only 29.5 from 3).

They also manged to get 4 recruits in the portal that were significant contributors. They have won 9 of their last 11 games.

How has a new school like Grand Canyon left ISU in the dust in terms of…well, pretty much everything?

Private colleges have more leeway on how their money is spent. Believe Jerry Colangelo Uof I grad, Phoenix Suns and Coyotes management has advised GC on how to grow their campus.

When Coach Sprinkle left Montana State for Utah State after last season, he brought two key pieces with him. His Big and his PG. Great Osobor (17.7 PPG 9.0 RPG 2.8 APG) Darius Brown (12.3 PPG 4.3 RPG 6.5 APG). Let’s see if he takes Osobor to Washington with him.
