IMO, to survive his problems with the Athletic Administration and his deficient people skills, Donewald would have had to maintain the program at a consistent NCAA Tournament level, but recruiting had slipped from the McKenney/Johnson/Stefanic/Duncan/ Busse/Lamb/Malaine/Tyus/Cornley/Harris recruiting classes to the Kraatz/McGrath/ Wightmann recruiting classes, which did not bode well for the future of the program, and so it became a convenient time to terminate him.
