Barring a miraculous Arch Madness run, I think it would be beneficial to accept an invite to the CBI. We just might finish strong enough to get an invite. Generally you have to be .500 or above.

Keep in mind...the NIT rules have changed. There will be regular season conference champions that do not win their tournament relegated to the CBI. The auto bid for regular season conference champs is gone in the NIT.

Can't wait to watch Arkansas host Ohio State in the first round of the NIT.

Chase had 3 fouls in 8 minutes last night. It is hard to keep playing him doing things like that. I would also like to see more of him on the floor. However, in these close games, it is hard not go with Foster and Lewis. Foster must be shooting 80% at the FT line in MVC play. He has really picked it up.

True. A spot in the CBI will probably be harder to come by. Of course, many teams decline invites every year.

I didn't read the article but wanted to share for the financial aspect of the tournament. It is an interesting opportunity with the NIL pool for student-athletes. It is my understanding that the numbers are the same or at least very similar for 2024.

"One of the CBI’s distinguishing and controversial features is that it charged schools to participate; initially the price was $50,000, which was slashed to $27,500 in recent years."

"The same goes for athlete compensation. For this year’s tournament, the CBI introduced a first-of-its-kind plan to reward winning teams with NIL money for their players—$40,000 to be split among the champions, $25,000 to the runner-ups and $2,500 apiece to the semifinalists."

UNI is 15-13 (9-8 MVC). Since their last NCAA bid (2016), Jacobson has more losing seasons (4) than winning (2, maybe 3). Considering the size of his paycheck, it would be interesting to see if UNI is getting the feeling to move on. He isn’t being paid middle-of-the-pack money, but that’s mostly where he’s had them lately.

UNI may be favored against Valpo, but they will likely be underdogs hosting Drake and playing at SIU.

Don’t get me wrong, Jacobson is a legend in the MVC. An MVC HOF coach. But has the magic run out for him in Cedar Falls?

-First off, I want to say hats off to say great job to the students who showed up, Red Alert and Trevor. They were loud, into the game and I think the crowd fed off of that. People were cheering and last night was a fun game. This team has been so much fun to watch these last 3 games.
- Klew and Myles were beasts last night. I was concerned about UNI size with Hutson and Henry but those 2 took it right at them. We had a 38-29 rebounding edge over a good rebounding team.
-Mal hitting his shots and getting his 3 point percentage back up has been huge. The ball movement has been crisp and Myles continues to get his touches and points.
- I continue to wonder how things will go when DB gets back. DB is great, he can do what our other guards can't do but Banks, JK and Mal have found something. We had 17 assists and 11 turnovers (only 7 turnovers at the under 4 timeout).
-JK what can I say. Call him whatever you want to call him. You can call him Johnny K, Johnny Cash, Johnny Buckets, Johnny Himzinger or Johnny Kin-zanity. This kid right now could probably run for mayor of Normal or ISU President, this kid is catching fire and becoming a fan favorite before our eyes with how he hustles and just plays the game the right way.
JK could throw his hat in the open ISU prez search right now, but Normal’s mayor has been in office since the Bryson/Richardson era. I’m not sure we Normaliens know how to vote for anyone else…

Ben Jacobsen = Mike Tomlin.

Their past success is so legendary in their respective cities that both will get to choose when they move on regardless of what they’ve done recently.

If Tomlin has a losing season next year, I could see him being out in Pitt. Whether that is being fired, a negotiated separation, or whatever mechanism. I could be dead wrong, but, like at UNI, it has been a noticeable decline.

Jacobson is a legend. But that will not buy you forever. He may not be gone after this season, but the attendance will decline and funds will start drying up if he keeps at his current level or declines further. I believe external parties had to come in and write checks to keep Jacobson at a salary far above the UNI budget. Will those funds continue at .500 or lower records most years?

You can’t count Jacobson out of quickly turning things around. But what happens when you start reaching 10 years without a bid? With mostly .500 or losing records? Nearly $1 million is a lot to pay for that.

He's currently working with his 5th AD (Interim Bob Bowlsby). He's also signed thru 2029. 2 years removed from winning the MVC regular season, when covid knocked out post-season tournies.

Thanks Mel; that definitely means no chance at turnover, at least for a few years.

Their MVC regular season title was like ours though. They weren’t likely to make the NCAA tournament after losing to the 8-seed in their opening conference tourney game. Most MVC schools would be happy with an NIT bid, but at what they’re paying him, I would guess there are higher expectations for the Panthers. 2025+ could get real interesting with a bad finish to this year and similar/worse results next year.
