Good info from lot of good sources .. even the nearly departed TR resurfaced after a much deserved offseason break.

My main takeaway is that it appears our DL group, particularly DT, looks to be in pretty good shape considering how much we have lost since a year ago. Still remains to be seen how we fair defensively come next fall, but I'm starting to feel pretty good about how well we reloaded - further along than I would have expected. I total figured this would be a rebuild (i.e. not reload) kind of year defensively.

So below are the 2017 defensive stats by position group, subtotaled by whether the Played in Spring Game, Graduated last year, or Sat Out of spring game. With Brees and Horton sitting, we only had 1 returning starter on defense play in spring game. Scary but very encouraging that the defense is doing so well at this earyl stage.

Played Spring Game

Pos Tkls Sks TFLs
DB 36 0 1
DL 40 3.5 7
LB 92 4.5 11
Tot 168 8 19

So just looking at Tackles, we had 168 out of 651 tackles from 2017 that played in Spring Game ... 25%

Sat out of spring game (Brees & Horton)

Pos Tkls Sks TFLs
DB 46 0 3
LB 75 3.5 10
Tot 121 3.5 13

We had 121 of 651 tackles sit out of spring game ... 19% sat out of spring game .. so this means we have 44% total returning tackles from a year ago, once we get Brees and Horton back on field.

Graduated 2017 - lost production

Pos Tkls Sks TFLs
DB 129 2 5 .. lost 3 of 4 starters
DL 120 19.5 35 .. lost 3 of 4 starters
LB 113 0 7 .. lost 2 of 4 starters
Grad Total 362 21.5 47
Grand Total 651 33 79

Lost 56% of tackles, 64% of sacks, and 59% of TFLs.

Just in case you have trouble reading above totals by position group, here our individual player defense stats from 2017 for our top 16 .. lost 9 of 16, plus 2 sat out spring game. Translated, we were playing without our top 8 tacklers from a year ago.

This is what we need to replace. I'm very interested to see Ridgeway play, as he's bigger now than anyone we've had playing DT for a couple years. I'm pretty confident about his ability to jam up the middle and perhaps to occupy a couple of offensive linemen. If he does that and frees the LBs for tackles, we'll be in good shape on running plays.

I do wonder how we'll get the pressure on the QB that we need. Keene, Conley and Graham make a lot of sacks. Graham must have about the highest sack percentage in school history, as he was very effective in the passing situations where he played.

I hope we can get some major pressure from the inside defensive guys, but that is very unproven for now.
